  • The relations between the United States and the Soviet Union are in the spotlight as The Soviet Union itself verges on chaos. Amidst this, Robert Strauss is named by President Bush as the next US ambassador to the Soviet Union. Strauss is a Democrat and the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He is a well connected Washington insider, a lobbyist and a lawyer, and a good friend of George Bush and James Baker. At this time Strauss' contacts with wide web of people and his Democrat affiliation may provide a smoother path to Senate confirmation.
    A summit meeting between US and the Soviet Union may occur later this month. A treaty to cut each side's nuclear arsenals is hung up on the process of verification - how to count the number of warheads, and monitoring dismantling.
