Wild & Free: Episode 1 - Food Market & Garden Tour

Come and join us as we discover food as a way of life in Vanuatu. From Port Vila’s thriving markets to harvesting from the land, James, Laurentine, Rangi and Hugo meet with market-goers and produce-growers to discover the “true representation of food as medicine.” In the capital, the markets are alive with fresh fruits and vegetables grown on the islands, with live chickens and seafood for good measure.
We search for the ingredients to make lap-lap, a pudding made from grated vegetables, soaked in coconut, and cooked in banana leaves. We then venture to the gardens, where Hugo shows us around the wild, fence-free plot, to discover yam, taro, passionfruit, pawpaw, and worms! The Vanuatu people have a deep connection to their food, often living side-by-side as the trees grow. The land runs in the family, where the caretakers have an inherent knowledge of what belongs to them, and what belongs to their neighbor.
