David, I just wanted to say as a beginner blacksmith I truly appreciate you explaining each step and the why behind the way you do things. Thank you for sharing and keep up the fantastic art you create.
Great video and blade! I have the same press as you do and I’m having difficulty with using the stops like yours to get the dimensions…do you have a measurement to share of the stops you use for like the 3/8” thickness and so forth? Thanks! 🔪❤️
Thank you! I don't know that measurements would be as helpful as just explaining how I made mine. I clamp whatever thickness material I want between the dies and then mark the length of the stop needed on the sides of the press. I cut two stops about 1/16" too long, and then grind it down until it just fits the space in the frame. I grind the two stops while clamped together so they're as close to exactly the same length as possible. This is actually one of my biggest pet peeves with having a smaller press. There's no room on the dies to just add a kiss block of whatever thickness you want. Lol, hopefully someday I can upgrade to the 25-ton. I use solid 1" square mild steel stock for the stops. I have a bunch of 1/16" and 1/8" shims that I super glue to the top of my stops as well, when I want to make the stops just a little bit higher. I hope that helps!
Nice blade and beautifully narrated. Even tho you used 2 pieces of 1084 as the core, that is still considered 1 layer. So you are not wrong, it is only 5 layers (Gomai). But I suppose some would argue since you have 200 + layer Damascus cladding 🤷🏻♂️.

Hey, thanks a lot! I really appreciate the feedback, and I'm glad the information is helpful.
that damascus pattern is insane! also im pretty sure that was canvas, not linen micarta. looks awesome though.
Oh man, you're totally right. Those are canvas micarta scales 😛. Pretty sure I said linen in both videos 🙃

What kind of press is it? Looks about right in size for my space
It's the Coal Ironworks 12-ton press.
@@DavidMoonForge Thanks! Hope to get my hands on one of those someday
@@danielhjalmarstedt6469 good luck! It was an awesome addition to the shop. I love it. The only problem is now I want a bigger one 😛
