Nalanda University was once the greatest academic institute of the world. The ruin of the university is the tremendous lost to all buddhists. Hope the newly launched Nalanda university will recover its reputation.
Satyam Eternal no brother it can be recovered yes government has some prejudices but mind of newly converted Buddhists are free and I can say within next 40 to 50 year we will create at least base for this. But University will be in any other part of India, probably Maharashtra, ancient ASHMAK.
India's greatest export to the world is Buddhism - for the last 2500. It has penetrated every corner in Asia and now in 21AD has become a force for good and influential even in the West even though a tiny minority of them are Buddhist. But surprisingly in India, it is neglected. Whenever politicians, media and academic talk of religions they never even mention Buddhism. Only Hinduism, Islam and Christianity are talked and debated. Less than 1% of Indian are Buddhist and many of Neo-converts mostly Dalits are not really interested in Buddhist philosophy but converted just to escape the caste prejudices.
Bihar was most advanced place in the world from days of Buddha till 1200AD. With the fall of Buddhism in India and in particular in North India, India fell to rock bottom. Now Bihar often is synonymous with underdevelopment.
Islam destroyed much knowledge and architecture in India. On the other Mao and his cultural Revolution destroyed thousands of years old culture in China. Both civilizations lost a great deal of history. Such a shame.

While Chinese are good at keeping the historical records which made him famous. But Tibetans have kept the real teachings alive - Buddhism from Nalanda.
@arv er Marpa the great translator (10AD). There are so many Tibetans who have been to India since 7AD-12AD. Lotsawa (translator) Rinchen Sangpo (10AD). So many from 3 older sects of Buddhism went to India to study except for the newest sect Geluk which was established more than 100 years after the destruction and fall of Buddhism in India. Tibetans are poor at keeping the historical records but are more concentrated on the teaching itself than the records of the journey. Many of surviving monks of Nalanda, Vikramshila etc escaped to Tibet after the Baktiar Khilji attacked destroyed not only Nalanda but Odanpuri, Vikramsila, etc.
