    I’ve been struggling to come to terms with the news of Taylor Hawkins’ death these past few days. The tears just keep coming. ⁣
    ⁣In an effort to deal with my grief I thought I’d write down some words to make sense of it all and the impact he had on me as a drummer. ⁣

    If you’ve been struggling too or maybe just fancy reading what he meant to so many fans like me. You might find something you can relate with in there. Follow the link to read.⁣

    Sending everyone out there all my love.⁣
    ⁣Taylor Hawkins forever. ⁣

    You're a great instructor. Broke the beat down to simple terms.
    Still a mother to put it all in practice, though 🤣

    This is so different than Taylor Hawkins' usual playing. I love him but I get fatigued with some of their hits with a kick on every beat and erratic snare work. I don't mean erratic as in bad, he knows what he's doing, but my ears can only handle a drum part like "Times like These" for so long without getting fatigued. I can listen to this groove ALL DAY. The heart of it is totally in that left hand... you eliminate those ghost notes and someone playing drums for a few months could nail this. I don't think he ever even touches a tom or a crash cymbal here. Great work man!!

      Also: I can tell how great you are at drums because even playing it easy early on you're like unconsciously accenting on the hat... the 1 2 3 4 seems to have a different sound than the "&'s"... one of those things that's hard to teach because if the difference is too great it sounds wrong.

    I like to add 32nd ghost notes from the left hand underneath the main grooves. It gives it more of that studio feel where your hearing a lot more than just 16th on the snare. It often sounds like Hawkins is doubling up on the 16th creating a double stroke roll feel in the background, not just a straight forward single stroke roll.

    Best breakdown yet...
    I'm hear it with a right ghost snare instead of the kick in front of the snap snare. I tend to alternate in the song, hitting the kick there when I lose concentration on the ghost notes. I like working that clap in on the snare rim... But I want a clap stack like that, that thing is sweet!

    • @WillDrumsDaly
      @WillDrumsDaly  3 года назад +1

      Yeah it’s cool that the dynamics of the recording allow you the room to mess around with different ideas. The clap stack is a lot of fun! I actually recently did a gear review on that recently. So if you’re interested in seeing more of that bad boy have a watch of it here: ruclips.net/video/Eg-4smaeJFY/видео.html

    I love your lesson. I am a total beginner, and have a digital table top kit. Will... in the video of Shame Shame, next to Taylor, to his left ....is a lady playing what looks like a block of wood with drums sticks. I love that sound. What is that instrument, and could I make one? Thanks again for all you have done for me.

    • @WillDrumsDaly
      @WillDrumsDaly  2 года назад +1

      Hey Penny glad you enjoyed the lesson! If you’re talking about the live performance video I think you are, I’m pretty sure they have literally just mic’d up a lump of wood 😂 But you can get hold of actual woodblocks as a percussive instrument too, they tend to be hollow rather than just a piece of 2x4 like in that video.
      Hope this tutorial helped you with the song.

      @@WillDrumsDaly I watch your video over and over again. I am understanding more as I watch, for sure..... I appreciate your talent, and instruction. So, it really looked like a 2x4 to me, but, what do I know. Thank you for the explanation. This song, is my favorite tune right now. Drum-On Will.....we love you!
