The show was way past it's prime at that point. And the whole Joey and Rachel dating storyline it was in response to was overwhelming disliked by not only the fans but apparently the actors themselves as well.
Chandler's sarcasm was already brilliant but Matthew Perry was very good at turning the sarcasm into physical mannerisms. Never seen anybody so brilliantly use their body to convey sarcasm.
This is why Friends is such a comfort show for me, I can see myself on every character... sometimes I even look up to how they handle their problem just to gain some wisdom :')
