Nice reaction. Casting my mind back to that time I don’t think anyone was expecting Kate to do a full blown Christmas style special. That would have been an unforgivable sellout. Kate would have had significant input to that show’s choreography, and the dance routine for Them Heavy People was based on the routine in that single’s music video. The Man With The Child In His Eyes was the song that got Kate the record contract when she was 16 (one of three David Gilmour paid to have professionally recorded to show to record companies). If you’ve not already done so, do watch the music video for that song. Although the voice was Kate at 16 (before she started experimenting with her higher register) the music video was shot when she was 19. She looked stunning in many of her videos, including those in her mid 30s, but it was that video for ‘The Man…’ that ensured a massive male fan base. You must at some point do her duet with Peter Gabriel on his song ‘Don’t Give Up’. One of the great duets of all time with life saving lyrics. Watching the music video for that is mandatory.

Yes, the "massive male fan base" and the massive LGBTQ fan base is a combination unique to complicated Kate!

Well I think it simply boils down to the fact that she is a certain gay man's woman that they would love to be (free, expressive, nurturing, dramatic, and emotionally available). Then to the straight male she is complicated enough to be interesting, and just a feminine sexy that gets their juices going. I just love the way this guy reacting to her is so enthralled, I love his excitement.

The bearded guy in The Wedding List segment was her brother Paddy, who has played multiple instruments on Kate's albums, and appeared in many of the videos.

Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes The Flood" was from his 1st studio album, in 1980 Kate worked with Peter on his 3rd album and Kate provided the backing vocals for two tracks "Games Without Frontiers" and "No Self Control". When working with Peter Kate was introduced to the Fairlight CMI which played a significant role in her 3rd, 4th and 5th studio albums- "Never For Ever", "The Dreaming" and "Hounds Of Love" respectively. The songs Violin, Egypt and "The Wedding List" were included on "Never For Ever"" released in 1980 and it entered UK album chart straight into number 1, Kate co-produced it.

I’m looking forward to you reacting to some of Kate’s later performances after the Hounds of Love album. I’ve already mentioned her duet with Peter Gabriel on his song ‘Don’t Give Up’ but others to try include ‘This Woman’s Work’ (later taken to No. 1 in America with a cover by the R&B singer Maxwell), ‘The Sensual World’ (sensual being an understatement) and ‘Moments of Pleasure’ (which ends with a call-out to those dear to her who had passed). I know you find these distracting but I would recommend watching the official music video for each of these songs if and when you get round to them.

She was constrained by a microphone during her performances, so she had a headset made as the first performer.
Here on YT is also her concert where she used it for the first time - Hammersmith Odeon 1979 FULL CONCERT.
She was also one of the first to use Fairlight CMI.

The Wedding List: It's about newly weds and the groom (Rudi) gets killed shortly after their wedding. Then the bride goes after the murderer, and she kills him.
They show a newspaper and sing: "Passion crime. Newly weds. Groom shot dead"
Then Kate says she'll put him on the wedding list, the list of presents you could buy for the new couple. "I'll get him and I will not miss!" and later "I got him and I did not miss!"
And the background vocals sing: "After she shot the guy, she committed suicide, must've been Rudi's child..." while Kate sings: "I'm coming Rudi!"
At the end you see the (dead) Rudi lift Kate up (to heaven?).
I've always found this a very gripping story, and the pure venom coming from Kate's voice when she sings that she's gonna get him, wow!
If I'm not mistaken, Kate was inspired to write this song by an actual newspaper article. But I don't know anything more, I'm sure there's another commenter who can tell us more 🙂
And maybe you can do Army Dreamers and This Woman's Work?

For more “chest grabbing” and a dance routine that can raise the blood pressure do watch the official music video for ‘Hammer Horror’. Kate’s choreography at its most theatrical.

Hi and thanks for this. I remember when this was broadcast and it seemed odd and wild back then. There is a live version of "The Wedding List" that is well worth looking at. It was part of a charity gig that Kate Bush took part in and on the night the band included:
    Phil Collins (Genesis) - drums
Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) - keyboards
    Midge Ure (Ultravox) - guitar
    Pete Townsend - guitar
Mick Karn (Japan) - fretless bass
    Dave Formula (Magazine) - keyboard
Peter Hope-Evans (Medicine Head) - harmonica
Kate even had to navigate a potentially embarrassing wardrobe malfunction and did so without dropping a note. Her live performance of this really is cool.

Them heavy people is about how painful spiritual growth can be and the feeling of sometimes being beaten up and battered by the whole process which isnt always a straight forward path. That's my interpretation anyway and others may see it differently x

In 1979, there would have been NO adverse reaction to drag etc. Also, regarding your comments on live/prerecorded, Kate wanted to dance etc and you must appreciate that radio mikes weren't a thing back then. In fact, for her 'Tour of Life', also in '79, Kate arranged to have cobbled together a mike she could wear while dancing, using a wire coat hanger!

I believe that everything was played live for the show and due to the dance element's in some songs they were played back and lip-synced as head set microphones hadn't been invented.

The Beeb, always had artists lipsynching as a standard up until quite recently. There was a show called Top of the pops and they decided to let bands sing and play live, it didn't last long before they reverted to dubbing though because most bands were shit, live!
That said, Kate was amazing live!!!!!

@Matt King They made a live playing rule on Top of the pops, and it was a disaster. Most of them were shit. Seems that it was looks over talent , rather than talent over looks.
I remember seeing The Who on Whistle test and they were amazing, as were Sabbath

@@colrhodes377 definitely Top of the pops.
Having said that there is actually a live performance of Kate Bush doing Wuthering Heights on Top of the pops believe it or not! Actually singing at the piano. It's brilliant. ruclips.net/video/D51dnx3b-tg/видео.html
Unfortunately live Kate Bush performances are few and far between. My favourite by far is her doing Breathing on The Secret Policeman's Ball.

As for how well men in drag music videos might go down in 2022, well now, where to begin? The no. 1 song in the world right now is "Unholy" by Sam Smith (nonbinary) and Kim Petras (trans). Remarkably, it also briefly made it to no. 1 on the US Billboard Top 100. The music video is an unashamed all out trans "smut fest"! Kate had to be far more subtle and sophisticated back in the day, but her LGBTQ themed music never really caught on in USA, not until earlier this year when "Running Up That Hill" (RUTH) had a massive resurgence after it was featured in "Stranger Things". Interestingly, Kim Petras quickly released a cover version of RUTH, shortly after the resurgence, earlier this year.

Kate certainly gets away with a lot that might seem pretentious coming from others. But, of course, there's real thought and depth and skill behind what she does, so "pretentious" is never really applicable. But, yeah, I've been crushing on her since I was about 12, for more years than I can mentally accept as having passed.

Re the men in drag, back then it wasn't unusual in comedy or artsy things, and not likely to cause outrage, although some might raise an eyebrow. I think it is a lot like Paris and blacks. In the early to mid 20th century, when Paris embraced jazz, etc, it seemed like an accepting paradise to black Americans. Cut to modern Paris, where instead of a few visiting musicians, authors, US soldiers, etc, you have strong, widespread racism and discrimination in Paris in response to France's colonial past coming home to roost in the form of numerous immigrants from Algeria, etc, moving in permanently next door. The outrage with drag tends to be in response to men in drag teaching at schools, reading at libraries, competing in women's sports, in beer ads, bra ads, tampon ads, kids' films, etc, vs just appearing in burlesque comedy shows, Monty Python, or Kate Bush and David Bowie videos where their unusual nature or supposed comedic value was the reason they were used.
