  • This original documentary tells the story of the brave African-American men who enlisted in Connecticut’s 29th Colored Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War and fought for the freedom of their people…and the nation. Discover their remarkable story of sacrifice and heroism on battlefields in South Carolina and Virginia. Near the end of the war, the 29th Connecticut was sent to Brownsville, Texas where they were part of the federal force that occupied that town and brought news of the emancipation of the enslaved - celebrated today as Juneteenth.
Produced by Wide Awake Films and Berlin Equity Action Team.
This film was officially selected and won "Best Connecticut Film" at the 2023 Mystic Film Festival.

Lincoln was impressed when he first met Frederick Douglass. He knew a black man could be well cultured and well educated. He met with Douglass on other occasions on how to move forward.
Douglass suggested the black man will be the hardest fighter. He knows his own freedom is on the line.

My great great uncle and his brother-in-law -- both Afro-Indigenous Narragansett-Pequots -- fought for the Connecticut 29th.

Hello. You should make a film about the Mexican War of 1846 someday.

And it was a Republican president and later President Grant that were the first civil rights presidents. Not Democrats.

It would correct to state this fact - however over the last 50 years the parties have effectively switched positions (thanks largely to Nixon's campaign's in 1968 and 1972). It is incorrect to suggest that the modern Republican party is the party of civil rights that its forbearer was.
