What an awesome assortment of stones... Wewd love some smaller one's for my aquariums.😊 It must be difficult at times with all the ideas running thru your head to make a decision!! 😉 Neat granite walls... 🙃 Line of sight is very important, and as you say, any hill use it as an asset. 👍 Looks like a great layout to start with. I'm sure you'll be tweaking it as you go along.
Ed love your education and was wondering if you have a simple to use rendering software so i can practice laying out different water features. Really appreciate your time in educating the tribe of aquascape team members.
Thanks Dan! I don’t have any software that I use, all hand sketches which works and feels better for me...... Once I’m happy with my sketch I’ll pass it on to Sasha in our office and she’ll create a digital rendering using Dynascape
I love your knowledge and skill! I do have an important question I would love to hear your thoughts. We know that Nitrites are dangerous and your filter systems provide great aerobic methods by slowly moving through the water column. But how can we get rid of Nitrates, besides just water changes? We know that Nitrates can be removed through anaerobic methods through Nitrogen gas. Is there a way to set up a pond which could also help with Nitrates through natural anaerobic means?
Absolutely!!! Great question! Nitrates can be removed through several processes, anaerobic zones within the pond(areas hidden behind boulders with little water flow) agal growth is very effective along with other photosynthetic processes..... I never try to completely eliminate algae as it’s very effective at removing nitrates
Thank you for taking the time to answer. I really respect your advice. I have one more important question. I cover my pond in the winter as some of the Japanese koi did not do well otherwise. So I ask if the condensation that a cumulates on the top of the plastic and drops down into the pond actually adds concentrated Nitrates in the pond?
@@EdThePondProfessor ME TOO.... Ill use my inside voice...anytime you need some labor and are close by i will make myself available as long as you give me a biology geek knowledge fix min 1 hour each day... lol
Howdy Ed, I want to build just a small pond to keep the turtles separated from the koi and goldfish. Would I be able to dig it out by hand? I was thinking of laying a liner on the bottom.
Absolutely! We still excavate a lot of water features by hand. On average 1 man on our construction team can dig approx. 20 cubic feet/hour, Mark the shape that you want for the pond and start digging! If it’s for turtles you probably don’t need it deeper than 18”-24” depending on the species, I typically excavate one section with a gentle slope to allow them to easily get in and out of the pond
@@EdThePondProfessor thanks for the quick response, appreciate it. Got the shape of it done and started the digging out but then the freeze 🥶 came. Gonna finish as soon as the thaw hits.
Where do I sign up to learn how to build these beautiful works of natural art? I'm from Indiana and would love to get to learn how to do this. I hope you can give me some direction. Thanks my friend.
Checkout the New Aquascape University, It’s a series of On-Line courses to get you started, I’m actually returning from a Training Event in Florida where we installed a smaller version of this project, We’ll have Hands-on events throughout the year
Great question! They sell them by the Ton so they will weigh them to determine the cost. I usually do a quick estimate while choosing the rocks. 1 Cubic foot of Limestone is approx. 150 lbs So a 3’ x 4’ slab of stone 12” thick would weigh approximately 1,800 lbs. They’re usually not perfect square or rectangular and the thickness varies, etc..... But it can give you a rough idea, I hope this helps
I’ve built projects around the world and Greg Wittstock “The Pondguy” and I built a few project near Frankfurt, Germany a few years ago...... Would love to help!
I could listen to Ed speak all day! Thanks for taking us through your process Ed

Nice! I want something like this one day. I will have it. And I’ll show Ed this comment when he’s standing next to me helping him dig. Lol
