How To Naturalize a *RECREATION POND* - Part 3

- Work continues on the large recreation pond. We found a log from a tree that blew down during a recent tornado and recycled it into our water feature! We always try to make our ponds as natural-looking as possible.

Ed is the MAN!!! 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼 Thanks for paving the way!!!
Thanks Dan!!!
A dream team of pond artists!
An Incredible Team!!!
The details that go into building these wonderful creations is amazing.
Thanks Sharon!
Can't wait to see it finished! The addition of the tree is amazing!
The tree was a great addition!!!
This is a MUST WATCH video for anyone looking to build a large recreation pond... Great job showing the excavation and intake area. Great job showing how to naturalize, Great job showing how to place large boulders, Great job showing how the Wetland works... Just a great teaching video all around! Nice work Ed!.
Thanks for watching and for your feedback!
Ed its gonna be great! I want that tree house...😂😂😂😂 Ed...You are a walking encyclopedia on building ponds. ✌✌✌ God bless y'all
Thanks for your support and feedback Catherine!
The Treehouse is Awesome!!!
This was such a fun project to be a part of! Thanks Ed!🤙🤙
Always enjoy working with you!!!
It's always good to recycle! That log will look spectacular I'm sure 💪😎🌳
It’s an Incredible Focal Point!!!
ED, ED, ED, and the missing in action JAAK!! 😂 Nice piece of property!! This is a team with no loose links. I'd love some of the bark slabs from the tree for orchid mounts. I use cork bark now that I collect locally, from an old experimental tree grove, that's on the ground. Cork was widely grown during the wars as cork for life vests. This recreation pond will be stunning once completed with landscape. Keep on Rocking It Team. 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching Robert!
This is a great team to have on a project of this scale!
The Bark from this tree was very impressive!
I had no idea that Cork was used for Life vests???
Love these videos Ed! Super informative. Every video I watch from the Aquascape crew puts me one step closer to leaving IT and starting a water feature company!
I love it!!!
Thanks for your support!
Gonna be another incredible feature!
Yes!!!
Looking amazing!
Thanks Scott!
Great shots of strapping & setting large step stones
Thanks!
Phenomenal project!
Thanks for watching!!!
Enjoyed watching the process!
Can't wait to see it finished!!
Yes!!!
This looks superb. Nice to watch the wetland being built after watching your session on the AU’s ‘advanced construction: wetlands’ seeing you bring in all the different elements. 👍
Thanks for your support!!!
This is going to be epic!
Thanks Brad!
Thanks for sharing your thought process!
Thanks for watching!
This will be another incredible achievement
With all these talented artist collaborating how can you go wrong
I guess when you have to ask HOW MUCH this will end up costing you can't afford it
So I keep on working on a much smaller scale
It’s an incredible project and customer to allow us with the necessary Creative Freedom to do our thing......
This is awesome!
Love the details, thank you!
Thanks for your support!!!
Sweet project!
Thank you!
Incredible
Thanks!!!
So many questions I’d been asking myself as I attempt to build my own recreation style pond in the next few weeks answered. I’ve dragged a few huge fallen Grey Box Gum trees with root ball over to go inside, and got a 20T granite Boulder, I’m going to need a crane to set that though..
Awesome!!!
Have Fun!
This is why Ed is the professor
Thanks Dennis!
👏🏻
Thanks Pondguy!!!
damn when that pond is done it is going to look sexy awesome.
Yes it is!!!
Thanks for watching!
Hey Ed, another great video. Off the wall question for you. You are the person I trust the most to answer this properly...
Our 20k gallon rec pond is frozen now. We have kept a hole in it and have an aquascape aerator running. Right now we have it on one of the first ledges (in the photographic layer), about 8 inches under surface. Is this a good depth? My thoughts on it.... deep enough so it doesn't freeze (ice thickness currently about 4 inches), but not too deep. The water motion is preventing freezing for now, but we get MUCH colder here.
I was thinking that pumping -20C air (-4F) down too low would be bad. I.e. I think putting this deeper, in 6 foot deep end would freeze the fish out? Especially as the air get down to the -40C (-40F) temps in a month.
One more quick thing... the ice thickness is soon safe to skate on (already likely there, but i want to give it another 2-4 inches or so thickness)... would this damage my koi? Skating noise, stopping, hockey sticks? My kids want to skate on it really bad, I just want to make sure I don't hurt/kill my koi. Thoughts on that also?
To summarize, 1) depth to out aerator, and 2) does skating on the pond hurt the koi (accoustics)? Thanks for all you do.
Great question!
If it’s possible I’d recommend placing the aerator in 12”-16” of water depth, don’t place it on the bottom as it can be dangerous for your fish.
If it’s possible place the aerator in a shed or closed structure as it would help with the air temperature, I’ve even setup a small heat lamp/light over the aerator to pre-warm the air in extreme situations.
You could ice skate on the surface without any issues,
Have fun!!!

Hey Ed when you was explaining rocks over the Aqua blocks and you said you had formulas for that part is that something i can read about somewhere? As i will be building a rec pond and would like to start researching/planning it. As my little pond now just had biofalls and Skimmer 400 which didnt need to be really thought out.
Most Wetlands I build will have 220 lbs of gravel/square foot of wetland.
One small Aquablock = 3 square feet
660 lbs of gravel for every Aquablock, the gravel should ideally have 3 different sizes of gravel,
Large 3” Gravel on the Aquablock
Medium gravel 1.5”-2” for the middle layer
Small gravel 3/4” for the top layer which will be planted with aquatic plants
1 Centipede Module requires 16 small aquablox.
The size of the Wetland should be equivalent to 25-30% of the square footage of the Recreational Pond
✌🏼
What’s the heaviest boulder you can place on the Pondgard epdm liner?
Dear ed, doesnt the tree-log add alot of decay and brown water to your pond?
Oak wood is very durable and rot resistant, it will last 20+ years without any issues.
It will slightly stain the water(tannins) are released from the wood but the large volume of water compared to the amount of wood in the water will keep the tannins to a minimum.
However......
One of the benefits of having tannins on the water is it will inhibit algal growth.
So some tannins can be beneficial.
Hi Ed, a question, can we use aggregate stone or crushed stone to filter debris in wetland filter? It is work like river stone?
Don’t use crushed or angular stone, I’ve had problems with it becoming clogged over time
@@EdThePondProfessor Thanks Ed
Ed, How many oz. is the “Heavy Duty” underlayment fabric that you mention?
I should double check but I believe it’s an 18oz?
Ed - when you said heavy duty textile fabric - is that different than the normal 8oz geotextile fabric?
Yes,
It’s 3X thicker than the standard Geotextile
@@EdThePondProfessor thank you. Is there a name for it? Other than heavy duty? Is it 24oz fabric? How do I find it?
Are river rocks sustainable? or is there other types of rocks we can use for the filter
River Rock is currently the best option......
💯🔥💙👍
Thanks!
Out of curiosity what’s the average price for one of your rec ponds
Average price is probably between $125-$150K
Looking amazing!
