      Goldberg's loss to Kevin Nash and the fingerpoke of doom and Starrcade 1997 is the reason for the downfall of WCW. That's what some say. Ask yourself one logical question. If a wrestler losing a match is the reason for the downfall of a wrestling company, why didn't WWE collapse when Undertaker lost to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30 ??? Most fans hated the decision to let Undertaker lose the streak? Undertaker's streak was much bigger than Goldberg's streak, so why didn't WWE collapse? The answer is simple, all your analyses are incorrect. The loss of a wrestler has nothing to do with the downfall of a company. AOL and Time Warner, and when Ted Turner couldn't control his own company, that was the real reason for the downfall of WCW. Nash, Hulk Hogan, or Eric Bischoff have nothing to do with the downfall of WCW. Without Hulk Hogan, Eric, Nash, and Scott Hall, WCW would not exist, and they would not have achieved any success without Hogan, Eric, and The NWO .

      @ WWE had no legit competition in 2014 after Wm 30 after the streak ended.. They also had Daniel Bryan winning the title at Wm 30 which offset the streak.. Context is King.. Takers streak ending also wasnt nearly as bad as the fingerpoke of doom

    • @Aizenborgman
      @Aizenborgman 2 месяца назад

      @@CannedHam2479 Don't try to make excuses. To this day people criticize the decision to let Taker lose and they still cry over him. To this day. If Daniel's win really made the situation better, we wouldn't be hearing criticism until today. The point I made when I gave an example of Taker's loss is that the company's failure has nothing to do with the result of a match. I explained to you the reason that AOL is the reason for the destruction of WCW and Brad Segel and Ted's loss and inability to control his company .OK ?

    • @CannedHam2479

      @@Aizenborgman Dont be in severe denial of reality by ignoring full context. I never complained about Takers streak ending. It was a good move imho. The streak was played out at that point and Lesnar beating him was logical, unlike the illogical finger poke of doom. AOL/Time warner is a lame scapegoat used by Bankrupt Bischoff to avoid accountability. AOL didnt force WCW to lose 60 million in 2000 and didnt force the bad booking.. If WCW remained profitable, they wouldnt have sold for PEANUTS to WWF. I dont fall for CON jobs by Con men like Bankrupt Bischoff, OK???

    WCW letting old WWF talent run their business and handing out stupid contracts to talent-less people (who didn't wrestle) while never developing new talent and also not being able to write themselves out of a storyline paper bag killed them. The finger poke of doom was just a symptom of a deeper illness.

      Unpopular opinion. The NWO should have ended after Starrcade 97. They should have acted then, elevated some of these guys. By the time they had to develop, they hired fucking Russo of all people.

      @@WestchesterLester just for a small group of people. Goldberg fans saw it as a new opportunity for Goldberg to battle through NWO. Honestly if that story line had less Hogan involved it probably would have worked out as intended. Goldberg just knocking out this heel factory one by one for good. It would have also cemented Goldberg's legacy even further at that time. But honestly in regards to the aftermath of it, i see it as 90% Hogan's fault for being a bit more greedy with his character.
      Real wrestling fans watched WcW, ECW, and WWF. We even would pick up back-yard wrestling tapes. There's a difference between so called "purists" who only stuck to whichever promotin was more popular at the time and actual fans of wrestling who were down for whatever felt unique.
      Nash, love him or hate him, did plenty of good for the business that wrestlers still benefit from today. Like garanteed money. Those guys pretty much defeated WWF for quite a while. WcW fell apart for many reasons but the finger poke of doom? Nah kid, maybe just you.

      Yeah it was quite literally a combination of things that killed WCW rather than just one but I think the moment Ted Turner sold the company, it was on borrowed time because of how the network wanted Nitro off their network so badly especially by 2000 and he couldn't do anything to stop it because of how far down the corporate ladder he fell after the merger. The awful booking in their last two years and when Bischoff told Tony Schiavone to leak Mick Foley's title win and it backfired on them were big factors that really just hastened their demise not to mention the Fingerpoke of Doom.

    I never believed that narrative. The finger poke didn't come close to killing WCW. That was among many things that was said and people ran with it. WCW some of their highest ratings during the first few months of 1999. Also, they had a top buy rate for the company when Hogan and Flair headlined. I think the ratings in early 99 were bigger than late 98. People say that WCW falsely advertised a match which isn't totally true. Hogan vs Nash was advertised after the show started so paying fans didn't expect to see it until after the show started. Numerous wrestling companies pull the same stunt by changing things throughout the show, WWE did the same back then. Purposely handing over or losing a title was done before and after the finger poke. WWE did it numerous times to advance feuds. I have no issue with that as long as it's limited.

    The fingerpoke of doom didn't end WCW, but it did end WCW for me as that combined with Tony saying Mick Foley was gonna win the WWF title made me switch the channel and I never looked at WCW again. My issue with the fingerpoke was because I spent all of 1998 waiting for the Nash-Hogan feud. The broke up the NWO and never did anything with it. Look at the pop Scott Hall got when he came out right before the fingerpoke. It was unreal. The fingerpoke sucked all the air out of the arena.

  • @bdr113080
    @bdr113080 2 месяца назад +1

    The finger poke of doom was terrible, but I don’t think that’s why WCW ended. For starters WCW ended because the new owners didn’t want the product and I’m tired of WWE fan saying “well if they were putting up the ratings like they were then they wouldn’t have sold WCW”
    For starters WCW Monday Nitro, when it was canceled was the highest rated show TNT had when WCW was canceled. WCW was still giving TNT its highest ratings. when it was sold. Also WCW had higher ratings than WWE or AEW has today. So I think both of those things kind of cancel it out. Ted Turner was pushed out of his own company. He was no longer in charge. That’s why WCW went away.
    Now you’re talking about what suck the last two years it was around that’s a different story. Yes, the finger poke of doom was a terrible idea and all that blame needs to go on Hogan.
    It’s been stated by numerous people he want to do have the belt and he didn’t want to do the NWO vs the nWo Wolfpac because Kevin and Scott were eating them alive on the microphone. He knew if he didn’t have the outsiders he didn’t have what made the nWo cool. Without the outsiders, it was just a generic bad guy wrestling faction with hogan as the leader.
    That did make a lot of people look at WCW like they were running out of ideas, but they could’ve turned it around. I know me and my friends there was about a dozen of us that loved wrestling. We loved WCW more than we did WWE, but we remember that night and we just remember changing the channel because we didn’t want to see Kevin and Scott reunite with Hogan at that time. The original nWo at that time had ran its course. There’s a reason why the Wolfpack was the most over thing in the company even over Bill Goldberg at the end of 1998. Goldberg was the most popular thing in the summer of 1998 but by the time you get to the end of the year, it was the Wolfpack. Don’t take my word for that match between Kevin and Bill and watch the audience when Kevin beats him. They were cheering for Kevin. They wanted him to beat Bill.
    The problem was they hired Vince Russo. We all kept hoping WCW would turn things around and get good again. Every Monday when as soon as the commercial for WWE came, I would turn it to WCW or if I was at my friends house he would turn it to WCW , and then we would see the horrible show that was being produced and we would turn it back to WWE. Two years but if you’re letting Vince Russo, write your show it’s proven that outside of WWE was a creative team with half a dozen other people that’s the only time he was successful. And that’s because there was half a dozen other people there to filter out his bullshit. Once he was left to his devices, see what he did to WCW and if it still wasn’t clear after WCW, he did the same bullshit TNA to the point that spike Carter if she employs Vince Russo then they’re dropping TNA. And for those that don’t know, Tn was not paying the salaries of its main inventors. All of the people that worked in the office and all the big stars at TNA were being paid by spike TV. it was their money and it only took about two years to figure out this Vince Russo guy is an idiot. so Vince Russo is why after the finger poke of doom WCW never got better. The finger poke of doom was just one bad idea but they could’ve turned that around in a couple months but they didn’t get the chance Vince Russo got a job there.

If you're really looking for the truth, you shouldn't ignore Harvey's words because he admitted that he doesn't understand anything. When your manager and boss doesn't understand anything about the business he's running? It's normal for the company to declare bankruptcy + Brad Seigel hates wrestling and Brad admitted that he was fighting Ted Turner and trying to convince him not to show wrestling on TNT. Your bosses don't want wrestling and Brad (one of Eric's bosses) admitted this. Any intelligent and understanding person who hears the confessions of Brad and Harvey (Eric's bosses) will know that the people above Eric are the reason for the destruction of WCW. I can't entirely disagree with that. I say with WCW, there were so many cooks in the kitchen that there could be multiple reasons not just one solitary reason. However, businessmen love what sells. I'll say as rebuttal, with them knowing that the higher-ups didn't have faith in the business, they should've been ever the more cautions about presenting the best product. Instead, the NWO cult meddled too much for personal gain, harming the product. The FPD wasn't the only failed ending of a story they had at that point.

    these guys act like its fake and the titles don't matter, but they sure didn't think that when they were on Nitro every week. Meng and Barbarian could have been a team to win the titles off the Outsiders. Outsiders had the titles all year seemed like.
    Luger and Giant had their title win reversed the next night. Goldberg was left off the card for 3 months except for Halloween Havoc, before losing the title to Nash and transferring it to Hollywood a week later. The fingerpoke match didn't exactly kill off WCW, but as the year went on, fans were probably just getting tired of the NWO ambush and no surprise title wins. Bret was booked into the NWO to avoid having him feud or win any matches over Hall, Nash or Hogan. Horsemen lost a hometown War Games, and that really should have been a match where WCW finally got a win after all those months of beatdowns. NWO used handcuffs for their beatdowns to avoid any real brawls. Fans wanted a break from Hogan's near 5 year title run in WCW. Hogan DID lose the title to Luger and Sting but won it back within a week or two, and Goldberg's title run was buried, and he was "arrested" for sexual assault of Miss Liz to keep him away from the Hogan/Nash fingerpoke match. The NWO was only out for themselves and didn't give back to anyone. According to them, anyone who wanted a match was selfish.
    A couple of tag title losses could have kept fans engaged a bit more instead of just every Nitro ending in no contest run-ins.
    Bret should have been given major matches against someone like Ultimo Dragon, Eddie Guerrero and Rey Misterio, but there was only like 10 guys in the Lucha/Cruiserweight division, and they just wrestled each other for 2 years. Raven and the Flock ended up feuding with each other and no one else....
    Warrior sat out the last 2 months of his contract with no appearances, even though the fans popped for him the last two times he was on Nitro.
    NWO interview segments were longer than every Nitro main event and no one got a push for over 3 years.
    Hall and Nash are self-centered and selfishly booking themselves, but they sit here and talk down about everyone else not moving up the card or even given a chance to do anything. Windham and Scott Norton also didn't belong in the NWO, but NWO wouldn't put anyone over ! There was no back and forth title chases and that's what really made the fans bored of it.

AOL killed WCW not the finger poker room

After they saw the title change, then turned back to WCW and what did they get to see? The Finger Poke of Doom.

    on the females in the biz topic. of course there were women who wanted to wrestle. there wasn't a promotion that had an ounce of depth in their women's division if they had a women's division to begin with (luna, bull nakana, aja, bertha faye [monster ripper], madusa, hell even sherri wanted to wrestle. That says nothing of the future 'divas' that actually wanted to be wrestlers but because of the state of the business at the time got thrust into the tit's and ass bracket

  • @bigj6143
    @bigj6143 2 месяца назад

    Regarding time off and rotating talent, sadly there needed to be four or five Kevin Nash's, Scott Hall's, Ric Flair's, but there is only one to make all those dates. In the territory days you could rotate talent in and out but when everything went National everyone knew who you were. You could not necessarily fill arenas by having your best talents just do TV and pay per views. That was tried and it effects the house sales. Hey, people want to see your best, not just your mid card guys or gals in these house shows all the time. As far as the women. Back in the old days, territory, there were women. More than Medusa and Bull Nakano. Plus Medusa and Nakano were legit wrestlers like the Moolah days of women who hit the ring and did not make it a competition with their male counterparts as some revolution. They did their thing. Then the Diva era hit. Suddenly you had these Diva types, they even had a reality show. It was sex and looks first and foremost and you had a bunch of Divas, who could not wrestle, Lesnar's wife, Torri Wilson, Stacy Kiebler, Golddust ex, and it became a crappy pillow fight era. They tried to evolve back into legit wrestlers but same pillow fight type look. Not all, Trish Stratus was outstanding, China (Sp?) too, a couple of ladies from Japan, called themselves the "Jumping Bomb Angels" were outstanding. These were actual wrestlers with moves and performances where they didn't feel they had to compete with the men. That competition with men thing started with Stephanie McMahon. Women are talented because they are talented, not because they have to turn Gothic, or wear multi-colored outfits that make them look like a rainbow. Or steal a gimmick from the men and call it "Horsewomen." The freestyle wrestling with psychology is gone anyway. Everything is so heavily scripted in these matches now that all matches for the most part look robotic. Especially the women sadly. When you have a match now where you can't guarantee timing but have to perform specific spots, you have performers obviously waiting so that the person they are working with gets in the exact position to execute the next high spot. Better off just grabbing a headlock or delivering what looks like a legit punch. Repeat some of that too and save your high spots and timing for the finish. Looks so rehearsed and robotic now and unnatural. Have a good match with a really good sometimes creative or even not creative finish. Fans remember the finish only anyway whether creative or not. Not the spot or spots missed that creative control in the back criticizes it's performers for after the match is over. Or you went under or over your allotted time by a minute or two. Fans are not going to like EVERY match or every match the same and they aren't supposed to. It's why they have stars and feature matches called main events by that name. Not saying any bout is disliked specifically but you have your ticket sellers and your supporting cast. Just like in a movie. Plus, stars are not stars overnight. Takes time for fans to adapt to them.

Without Hogan, Eric, Nash, and Hall, WCW would not exist, and they would not have achieved any success without Hogan, Eric, and The NWO .

    • @nzelver559

      Okay sure - the financial reason for the downlfall is AOL/Time Warner merger, but what about the Monday Night Wars going to Raw? What about Shivone giving away the results of Raw where Foley wins the title against the Rock?
      Yeah I think wCw dropped the ball on that one, plus the stupid David Arquette championship win, plus the fingerpoint of doom, plus Hogan's botched loss to Sting
      The company was a mess and the merger was just an excuse for shutting it down, but even before that decision was made - wCw was already dead.

    • @Aizenborgman
      @Aizenborgman 2 месяца назад

      @@nzelver559 yes The company was a mess and Yes there are small and big mistakes in the stories, scenarios and matches. But they have nothing to do with the destruction of WCW. For examplethere was a mistake in Starrcade 1997 ( Hogan vs sting match ) . But look at the profits of the following year (1998), they were all higher than the profits and ratings in 1997. In other words, the mistake that happened in Starrcade 1997 has nothing to do with the destruction of the company. How could it be the reason for its destruction when the company achieved much higher profits in 1998? How? We should never touch upon the Starrcade 97 issue.

      @@nzelver559 and by the way AOL lost 99 BILLYON . They lost $99 billion in 2003!! Do you know what this means? It means that even if WCW was making huge profits, they would never survive after AOL lost $99 billion. . In the DVD ( The Fall of WCW), Harvey Schiller (Eric's boss) admitted that he rejected many of Eric Bischoff's ideas. But the igno rant is the one who deliberately ignores Brad and Harvey's words and only believes himself.
