As a pilot and a former performance demonstrator I cannot grasp whether this was a mechanical failure or a gray out. So sad for us that we may never know. But in the end it doesn't matter. Except that it could have been me who was doomed because I tried to touch the face of God. Rest in peace cloud dancer.

He stalled it and it went into a spin at low altitude......we can see that but why he didnt recover is unclear as you say. I would have queried the C of G in looking at the handling after the stall and trouble getting adequate airflow over rudder to stop the spin.
Looks like that last manoeuvre where he did a quick outside loop with high neg G would cause him to ‘Red Out’. The plane simply fell from that point on with no input at all. Sad to see.
I dont think it would've created enough Gs to make him black out. You may be right but personally I'd bet on a snapped cable + not enough altitude to recover.

Never been a fan of unhooked aerobatics. The risk benefit ratio is out of balance. The list of fatal airshow crashes is large and growing...but, for what?
He stalled the airplane after a poorly executed Lomcovák.. That wasn't his engine cutting out. He was trying to save his ass jocking the throttle.He knew he was in bad trouble when your heard the throttle moving,. Same maneuver killed Jensen in the Beast. He was not to experienced at low level stuff as I saw from his energy management. Sad deal
I used to love to watch air demonstrations like this (without the tragedy). Now I have my PPL and the acrobatics scare hell out of me and I prefer not to attend.
I can totally sympathize with you. When I got my PPL at sixteen I was terrified at the thought of flying solo. And God forbid that a cellphone ring much less a stall alarm while flying. But my FI , a Marine FI and family friend told me that if I didn't practice stalls and deadsticks solo while he watched he would put me over his knee in front of my father and the flight crew and spank me until I cried. It was then that I realized that I was more afraid of humiliation than dying. The lesson? Give it up, you can't win. If you don't face your fear you will probably face something even worse along with the fear. That has been a valuable lesson for me as today I drive a F-16CJ as a CAS combat pilot and I know that if I am paralyzed by fear I won't be facing humiliation, I will be facing death. And there is no fear worth dying for.

@@denvera1g1 Sadly you could be correct. He may have had a grey out and came back far enough to react but the engine stumbled when he throttled up to quickly. I fly an Edge 540 for aerobatics and am careful to buffer the throttle so the engine doesn't become over-rich and stumble. But we can only speculate, we can never know for sure. I believe to judge a pilots last moments is disrespectful. That is between himself and God. We can speculate all we want but we should never judge. It burns my butt when these model building experts invariably label it pilot error became they don't have a clue how to fly, much less possess the bravery and instincts it takes to do aerobatics. As you also know I also own a 540. I have found when throttling down if I punch the throttle a moment before and relax letting it stumble and recover then ease the throttle down and coax it back to life. A VERY SMALL AND VERY SHORT light moment that is felt, not heard. A very short RPM drop. But it responds as if it were kicked. A very quick response for quick power such as when performing a T maneuver. Do not try it if your X axis is negative, then it will be sluggish and you will have to throttle back a moment to starve it and reapply throttle evenly so as not to become over rich. The best practice is to start high and dive even on the horizon to explore the second. The first needs very careful practice at high altitude in case it stumbles and you tail stall. Think light touches. Always have altitude. Always follow the stall, not fight it. The 540 will beg you to follow it. Trust it and let it lead you in a circle to the horizon with your coaxing. That is dancing.

Just look to me like he carried too much speed into the Lomcevak and failed to trade it for altitude. That extra speed sent him into a long tumbling arc and stalled the $hit out of it. I saw absolutely no sign of a recovery when it was stalled until 100' AGL. Going into the maneuver at a slow speed means a quicker stall for quicker recovery. High speed and ya tumble and stay in a stalled condition waaaaaay too long. One man's opinion.
There q Was a sign on recovery when he started up the plane again hw was 200 feet above the ground and the plane was starting again but it had too much falling speed and CRASH bam into the ground.

Saw a guy die in a low level crash in Oregon some years ago. Autopsy said he shattered his pelvis when the airplane pancaked into the ground, caught fire and he couldn't get out of the seat. Horrible to watch a person die in a fire and you can see them struggling and there's nothing anyone could do. The thing that really pissed me, and a lot of others off was, after the crash, some ass hole preacher was yelling "Pray, Pray IN JESUS NAME !!" "For what?" I heard someone yell, "he's already gone, and your invisible man didn't bother to help him before he burned alive". Religious people can be such idiots.

I have noticed that many airshow crashes happened due to pilots doing random maneuvers, no pre-planned sequences, and getting caught too low and at low speeds/stalls etc during such maneuvers. I believe this crash was one example.
It sounded like the engine cut out if thats what you're referring to, or are you saying these polots should have a minimum altitude at all times so that they could glide in to land
Although Eddie and I went toe to toe about her s cement crushing business 39' outside my door, he didn't deserve to go like this. 3 days after this accident, be a bald Eagle appeared outside my window, on an extremely windy day, when other birds were being blown out of the sky, he just hovered for about 3 minutes. I know that was Eddie. (But he never did resolve the toxic dust issue for me.) Now with the asbestos related lung cancer from his cement business, maybe I'll see him soon

It is a very cool part of a planes "sky-ability!!" But many times I have seen where it was more of an "after thought" then a purposeful thought!" Meaning oil was not dumped from a separate source (hopefully it was, and I am wrong...) into the exhaust headers or exhaust systems straight pipes... this will certainly work, but can be a deadly failure for the planes engine, as oil will build back up in the exhaust headers, into the engine, causing rings, pistons, valves, lifters even to "gum up," and eminent failure, resulting in (minimally, lose of horsepower,) or complete engine failure and stall out!!!! If you listen, you can almost hear this planes engine "gurgling," "struggling" to get all three precious elements for power... AIR, FUEL, OIL...!!!! Again, I am not assuming that is the case here, but..... sadly I have seen it happen before...!!! Not with this type of ..... results... but with all the "barn storming" this pilot was doing, AND A FINE JOB OF IT!!!!!!! Perhaps a build up of oil from upside-down, upside-up, downside-up, and spinning like a top, caused a back flow issue!!! I am simply trying to make other pilots understand the problem with possibilities of an oil induction system as done without proper installation!!!! First of all did anybody notice how sloppy, shifty and simple real airplane acrobatics are? Dude if i took my 50cc 90" wingspan and flew it next to him ud make him look like a total rookie. I never understood the sloppy and random nature of most freestyle air show structures. Why is he flying away so far to make most simple aerobatic maneuver and flies around randomly. Dude my routine in rc airplane is so complex if he tried it hed kill himslef on 1st try in 2 not even 3 seconds.
It's a lot easier with your feet on the ground flying toy aeroplanes.
