  • Building a Tiny House #1 - Salvaging a Trailer - • Building a Tiny House ...
    In this episode, I continue work on the tiny house after getting the salvaged trailer ready to build on. Using traditional construction materials I frame up the tiny house into my design. Building a tiny house is not much different than a not so tiny house, same wood, same tools and similar techniques. Join me in this step towards a simpiliar debt free life. Thank you for watching and I look forward to your comments. Be sure to visit me on facebook to see more photos and info on the project. www.facebook.c...

      ***** Ha, thanks. Buying a "real" house is fine too. They offer different things. In many places you could buy a "real" house for the same as it would cost to build one of these out of new materials. You've also got more opportunities for financial gain with a real house down the road. But that's not to say there is anything wrong with a tiny house! Thanks for the comment.

    Awesome find...only $100 for the junk camper. Man, I hope I get lucky too. I just got some free granite slabs for my counter top as well as three free boxes of hardwood and mosaic tiles for the back splash. I love that you didn't do you building under any shelter. It gives folks like me inspiration because although I have plenty of land to build, I don't have shelter either. Thanks for your videos, they are very informative.

      I'd reconsider tile in your tiny house ONLY if you're planning on moving it a lot. I talked a bunch with a builder of tiny homes and they asked me one thing "Will you be moving your home a lot?" I will so they mentioned tile is not the best choice, in the bathroom or kitchen.

      thinking of building one myself.. if I use reclaimed items and try and cut down on actual purchases besides the frame and other necessary items I figure I can build one for around 6-8,000 which around where I am would be ABOUT 6-8 MONTHS RENT FOR A ONE BEDROOM APARTMENT. I'd rather have a 120 square foot house of my own!

    • @squareinch4877
      @squareinch4877  10 лет назад +1

      EDC Adventures I hear ya! I feel if you where not picky about the details you could build one of these houses for even cheaper. Mine is going to fall in your range for the total cost and I'm adding a lot of details. If I was not doing the shingles, porch columns, etc.. the way I'm doing them I could come in really cheap on this project. Most of the costly steps have been done very cheaply, such as the trailer ($100), flooring (free), framing ($cheap), etc...If it was plain jane, I think I could come in at $3-5,000 easy. But regardless, the numbers are right if the situation works for you. Owning is better than renting long term. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @EDCAdventures
      @EDCAdventures 10 лет назад

      I would like to do things like what you are, but for now I wouldn't have the budget for it. However it being a house I can always upgrade, tear down or rebuild! I would get picky about the inside storage spaces though since I like a minimalist style house or at least keep a lot of things like excess backpacking/camping gear out of site.

    • @squareinch4877
      @squareinch4877  10 лет назад +1

      EDC Adventures I started this build for only $100 (the trailer) I've been working on the house for almost 3 years. I have several reasons for dragging it out, but one benifit is the cost is spread out, making it very affordable. I've never done a big project and had all the money at once.

    What a brilliant idea!!! Or, "brill" as the Brits would say... Sheer, utter genius. My husband and I have been wanting to buy several properties, mountainous and/or not, and put small cabins on each and rent them out - hunters, fishers, hikers, etc. We're not looking to make a ton of money doing so, just enough to keep the bills paid and a bit extra. Oh, and use the properties ourselves every once in a while! :) We looked into log cabin costs - both kits and on-site built - and came up with $20,000 plus each for such cabins of around 500 sq ft... Waaaaay more than we want to put in - plus, if we decide to sell later on, I don't think even half that cost would be recooped in the property cost. Crazy, just crazy. I LOVE this idea! Plus, since it's on a trailer, it can be moved around or removed fairly easily. Kudos!!!

    This is very very nice. My tendency/temptation would be to over-build w/2x6's etc, but I guess the fact that it's a trailer that must be actually movable, keeps that foolish impulse in-check.. + look at things like old Stearman airplanes - not a lot of heavy wood, but with good joinery it's a very strong/stiff wooden structure.

    I've been intrigued with tiny houses for quite a while and building one is definitely something I would like to do. I am always asking myself though: how would a tiny home fit into my life? Can I ask you. When you're done with this build. How are you planning on utilizing it? Do you buy a lot in the woods somewhere and just park it there? Are there states or counties that don't allow that or are you having to get a special permit? or do you just do what you want and let the chips fall?
    Help me out what is your plan?

    • @squareinch4877
      @squareinch4877  8 лет назад +4

      +Gary Grimmonpre I just do what I want. Historically speaking consider where we would be if no one ever questioned a rule or law. We would not even have the flag we have. Now I'm not trying be make a big statement here, not even a small one really. Just that in some cases I don't care about certain rules because I know what I'm doing is not harmful to others or myself in any way. My plan, which is just a plan is to buy a significant amount of land, and while living in my current house, build a pretty large workshop first. That would get me water and power. Then set up the tiny house to live in next to it. That would give me a place to live and work. I'd then start building a "real house", maybe a large cabin or some other creative house. Once that is done, then I'd move in to that and the tiny house would be a guest house. No permits for the tiny house, the other stuff would. I think in most counties in most states it is not allowed, but there are a lot of things that are not allowed that go on in plain site every day. It's all about how conspicuous you are. Would I set one of these up in the back yard in the city, nope, for many reasons. For me it will be relatively temporary. It's more of a art project for me, where designing and building it are the focus. I'm not in it for the "green" aspect or any type of statement about how one should live. I just think it is cool. Some have other reasons, but I think most people also do it because it's cool........but like to claim the other stuff(green, etc.) Not sure why, I think it's partly because building a tiny house is kind of odd, or out of the ordinary at least and "just because I find it interesting, cool, etc doesn't feel like a good enough reason, leaving them feeling a bit insecure with the reason.........so they smear other reasons on top so no one says anything. Once again, I have my reasons and they have their's.....and who really cares...but there are some blaring inconsistencies in a person talking about financial concerns that builds a $50,000-$75,000 tiny house and has a huge truck to pull it, etc, etc. and live in an average place. Financially there are many other options that long term would be much more advantages and green in many cases. Also, I'm sure a lot of people won't end up living in them long enough due to life changes to get enough "return on investment" for a lack of a better word, to really claim any financial investment or green. Regardless of my reason, yours or theirs....... all the reasons are still fun to consider and think about. For example, I'll have power, but I'd also like to try some solar stuff, but for the same reason a kid wants to make a crystal radio when he's already got a boom box......it's just fun. Same for other common tiny house practices and others that I've thought of. Well, all that is pretty random to what you asked..but sort of related as the way you live in your house will affect where you may live and what you'll have to do to make it work. The other reason I say all this is that a lot of people, on RUclips, in articles, etc.....will preach their reasons in a way that makes it look like other people living in more traditional ways are doing something wrong and contributing to the downfall of the world....when in reality, they too just thought it was cool. Anyway, a lot of people as I'm sure you know will turn on a dime the moment their "moral code" becomes the slightest bit inconvenient or the money starts flowing the wrong direction. Ok, that's enough preaching from me........ thanks for the comment, obviously I enjoyed it.

      kimmyjeans2 Thanks, not sure if I would build one for someone else or not. I figured people would eventually ask that. I make furniture for people and even that can get complicated so building someones little house would probably not be fun to deal with unless the $$$$ was so huge that I would just giggle through the hassle. I'll think about it................ perhaps just making them and auctioning them off would be better. That way I could make what I want.

    Again, I'm very late coming to this build series (or am I ? see below * ) but I'll comment fwiw anyway ;-)
    It looks beautiful ! ...and you knew there was a but coming didn't you :-) ...but I have to ask, what does it weigh ? (EDIT : see note below) Looking at all that wood I'm guessing it's already over the trailer axle rating and I don't recall you upgrading that in the trailer restoration. The frame some, but not the suspension or tires. And you still have to furnish it. I think it's a stationary Tiny House at this point, unless my guesstimate on the weight is way off.
    * According to RUclips I've already watched the next episode, #3 in the series, but only that one. And I don't recall it or the others and thought I'd just discovered it tonight. It's also unlike me to watch out of order and not subscribe to something like this. So I'm a bit stumped if this is a RE-discovery. It'll be interesting to see if episode #3 looks familiar and if I left a comment :-)
    NOTE : Out of curiosity, and after seeing mention of an estimate of 10,000 pounds that seemed very high, I ran some very quick and dirty calculations based on your mentioned 16" centers for the studs and 1/2 sheathing for roof and walls. This is without any interior finishing or furnishing.
    Framing (exterior walls, floor, and roof) about 1,500 pounds
    Sheathing (exterior walls and roof) about 1,000 pounds
    Roofing (corrugated metal evidently) about 500 pounds
    Siding (cedar shakes and board) about 500 pounds
    Total (very approximate) about 3,500 pounds
    Guessing the trailer is the standard 3,500 pound double axle, and assuming the suspension is in good shape, you're half-way to your 7,000 pound maximum. Not including the trailer weight itself (about 1,500 pounds at a guess) or any interior finishing or furnishing (looks like you can have about 2,000 pounds maximum - it'll add up fast). And you'll probably need more than a half-ton to tow it without issues.
    All just guesses, you really need to get it weighed to know for sure.

  • @wolfstrand1959
    @wolfstrand1959 6 лет назад +6

    how much it did it weigh in the end?

    • @nothere7198
      @nothere7198 5 лет назад

      If you're interested in a rough estimate I ran some quick numbers in my reply above. Guessing about 5,000 pounds for the empty shell and trailer, leaving about 2,000 pounds to finish and furnish the interior. It's going to be tight to stay under the presumed 7,000 pound max for a double axle trailer, but it should be doable.

      Jo Woo At the moment I don't think it weighs any more than a lot of peoples. Once completely done it may weigh a little more, but not that much. When I envision it disassembled all stacked up nice and neat on a trailer, it's not really that much lumber. I'm going to move it without the interior installed and nothing inside to keep the weight down. Once it's set up, it doesn't matter how much it weighs since I am not planning on traveling with it at all. Thanks for watching.

    I am working with a friend designing his tiny house that he wants to build in the upcoming summer months. He wants to make it as light as possible so is toying with the idea of adding atop his exterior frame (walls) a 1/2" styrofoam insulation board and then wrapping it with typar fiberglass House wrap and finishing it with fiberglass corrugated panels which will be painted. This will reduce the weight of the house considerably and plans on using Roxul insulation and pine panels (for structural integrity) to finish the interior. In your opinion, does this sound like a good structural plan? Thank you for your feedback.

    my main issue with this Tavistock institute tiny house psyop is this: you have a steel trailer and a wood top? the steel can take a lot of abuse, wood can't! the idea of making the wood part of the trailer stronger using steel clips framing other thing to make it stronger then just wood and nails?

    Do you have a list of materials you have used so far? I'm going to be putting my order for lumber in soon and am not sure exactly how much to get.

    How do you figure out the weight capacity of your frame? Did you replace axles with heavier duty ones since a travel trailer doesn't weight anywhere near what a wood framed and furnished tiny house would. How did you address this for safety? I know you added some extra frame sections, but that doesn't change anxle weight ratings.

      Square Inch It's funny you say that, I just realized your newer videos had the voice over in stereo, haha. I'm currently watching all the videos on this channel starting from the oldest and working my way to the present. :-)

    • @squareinch4877
      @squareinch4877  9 лет назад

      kyle collins I don't know the answer, it wouldn't be house insurance most likely, but some sort of personal property insurance you come up with between you and your insurance person....that's my guess. I have not got that far, and probably won't do it anyway.

      @squareinch4877  10 лет назад

      Emily Lang The seasons are very even here, but yes it can get cold and it snows but not a lot. A lot of people seem to be worried about me getting cold I think, but there's nothing to worry about. It's only about 140 ish square feet and insulated, it's going to be heated by a wood stove, I can roast myself in this thing if I want.

      Calli Mozdzen I don't know, the trailer was around 100, I only had a couple hundred in framing and sheathing, had most of it already. If you've seen the latest video on the channel, I've only got about $2000 - 3000 in it, if that.

      James L Bolts trough the bottom of the wall, through the sub-floor and trailer. 1/2 inch carriage bolts. I'm going to show that in the next video I think.

    • @squareinch4877
      @squareinch4877  8 лет назад

      +Ethan “Dillmuffin” Dill I built mine out of a bunch of 2x4s I bought for .50 so mine was pretty cheap. It's easy to figure out though, just draw out your plan and count out how many boards it takes, multiply that times how much they cost. It's going to cost a few hundred at least.

    • @squareinch4877
      @squareinch4877  8 лет назад +2

      +koogmo Subflooring means the flooring under your main flooring. The wood framing that the sub flooring is attached to is bolted to the frame. I've got a video on that too.

  • @jerrywaters4814
    @jerrywaters4814 9 лет назад

    why did you not put headers above the windows

    • @squareinch4877
      @squareinch4877  9 лет назад

      jerry waters It's not a "real" house, you don't have to follow code. But with this house, there's not enough weight to worry about it. Also the way the windows are built and shimmed the support is equal to having headers. Thanks for watching.

    • @jerrywaters4814
      @jerrywaters4814 9 лет назад

      lmao well when you are going down the road, there is a lot of movement, and bouncing, so you shall see one day... any ways i think that you did a good job on it, but to think that there is not any weight well i would disagree on that one.....

    • @squareinch4877
      @squareinch4877  9 лет назад

      jerry waters There'rs weight, but not enough to need the headers doubled up in my design, you'd have to see it in person. The window frames themselves act as headers. The weight of the roof is supported all the way to the trailer frame.
