I know right. Even as young kid it broke my heart seeing a mother in tears and pain like that. Cheech (Rudy) really showed me what it takes to be and man and help those less fortunate even if it meant personal sacrifice 🙏

I finally got hold of the SHOUT FACTORY Blu Ray edition of this movie, and it's great! Commentary by Cheech, two versions of the movie, the original ending, and a whole lot more! And, I get to watch this border crossing whenever I want. Cheech giving up his spot in the truck to a lady who needs it, and then orchestrating the run, through which he, the lady he loves, and the wassup boys just stroll into America. To the tune of the Neil Diamond song. Perfect! Makes me cry every time!
This went from a movie to a historical accurate account.

That was literally what happened to my great-grandfather. He was born in Peru and moved the city of Yerba Buena in Alta California in Mexico when he was just a child, perhaps as the ward of General Vallejo or one of his men. When California became a state Congress passed a law stating that all residents were now US citizens. This was quite controversial at the time but that's how great-granddad came to America without moving!
Cheech Marin, this is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Whomever wrote the script encore should have been a trilogy.

I have a friend that *walked* from Vietnam to China. Then he took a raft from China to Japan with 15-20 people standing ... it took him over a week to arrive. People died. I imagine that part of the journey is similar to what the Cubans do.
In Japan he worked for a while only until he had the cash to buy his trip to USA. He had to work for a year to pay that trip. He came over in a shipping container. No food, water, ventilation.... I think that was 2 months.
You better believe he is proud to be an American. People born here take everything for granted.

The realistic part of the movie is the trafficker having no emotion and complete indifference for the woman’s desperate plea. The unrealistic part of the movie is when Cheech gave up his $500 spot for the woman.
Which is why people cross from Mexico to the US instead of the other way around.
