The 3rd ever aerobatics tandem test flight with the first U-Turn 'Twin Force' prototype gone terribly bad when all 'A', 'B' and 'C' upper gallery lines snapped under 6 G load of the Infinite Tumbling maneuver. The canopy itself however remained perfectly undamaged.
At the end of the video U-Turn's designer Ernst Strobl tells facts and figures how he already reinforced this very first prototype to stand the load of 10G (!) but despite the large safety margin this incident happened. We never figured how this is physically possible that all those lines snapped instantly together with barely any delay whatsoever. The final product is now built twice as strong as the first one and since then there were absolutely no more issues with the strength of the wing.

There was still time for some more infinity tumbles on the reserve.
true
And the best part of the video? Line "What a luck that we also took our solo wings!" O.o
I love your sophisticated reaction right after the lines snapped :D
Amazing work on recovery and reaction to throw reserve. You guys did amazing job staying calm. Im glad you OK. Amazing.
Great reaction and handling of the incident! 10 points out of 10!
All i can say is; I hope i will be as calm as you when " not if " a paragliding emergency happen to me.
You are the man pal.
Hands down the best tandem pilots ive ever seen. The other 3 yahoos on you tube in the PPG industry don't hold a candle to these bad boys. I tip my hat to you.
As a glider I can only sit back in amazement at that flight! To call it irresponsible is only to ignore the excellent way the breaking of the lines was dealt with and the fact that a very safe landing was made.
You can't please all the people?!?!?!
Non flying keyboard heroes have no idea the sheer force behind tumbles, let alone having the weight of a second pilot strapped to you!
I have had to create this account because of the trolls on my main account, 90% of which have never left the ground unless doing a tandem skydive for their 21st!
Definitely a spectacular accident, and a great response from the flyer. Glad they have a paraglider with stronger lines now.
There's absolutely no thrill like riding your reserve down. At about 100' up it really sinks in that you're on plan B. No mulligans left.
briansmobile1 ain't nothin like a reserve ride , that relief when it opens free from the mess of main 'chute / wing is short lived , when as you said at 100' you realise you are on plan b , but very glad you had one ! 😎
You're fault you don't puta 3 ring system on your harness for something like this. Seems ridiculous. Then you'd be having fun still. Didn't the Rodriguez brothers build a 3 ring system for their harnesses that's proved to be the greatest thing since sliced bread in paragliding? Yet I see no one uses it.... Seems........ dumb to me ... Maybe?!
@@canatolakhoemini6728 What is a 3 ring system? I am just a normal pilot.
@thisisyol it's the cutaway system in use for skydiving, that allows for easy release of main chute if reserve needs to be used
by far the best video on youtube
Yup! I agree100%! I have seen it countless times the last two years.
Someday I will find a job, save money, learn paragliding, find a way to backflip like that, cut the cables on purpose, then I can say I lived fully.
Haha! Nice plan! :-D
Very cool guy getting that Rogallo twist out - much respect!
i like how people in the comments are missing the point that they are testing the structural integrity of the damn thing the guy at the end makes it clear thst the test was so they can improve the lines so that they can withstand the stress they are put under during maneuvers such as the flips that snapped them
These guys have steel balls
Congratulation the pilot and co-pilot. Thank´s for share.
Awesome awesome job guys, stayed calm. Pushed the limits which is the only way new things become possible. So glad to see you safe on the ground.
That was a surprisingly soft landing on that reserve. I like those steerable reserves.
Fantastic reactions for the reserve throw...well done guys
How cool was it that the glider also caught your deployment bag.
I noticed that too! One of my biggest concerns when abroad a) will I need to throw? b)will I find the reserve bag?
Exactly what people want to see before they go paragliding. Glad this is at the top of the RUclips list. Actually, no im not.
+TheSyntheticPop It's like you want to get the driving license, and see a factory chrash test video, and choosing to go by walk forever instead. :)
what a fast reserve deployment and recovery. very impressive
I don't know what he's saying right after the lines snapped but he sounded like he's having a lot of fun! Quick response to the emergency.
He says in Hungarian: "Anyád" that means in English: "Mother" from the motherfu....:))
"Aztageci! Dobjad, dobjad!' mean something like "Holly shit!" basicly and after "Drop it, drop it!" Yes, really adequated response. :)
I'd have to change my shorts after that.
Literally, word-by-word: "That cum! throw it! throw it!"
Good piloting on the Reserve deployment and maneuver to landing. Very impressed.
My human was impressed by the gentle "landing," they did not do a PLF but were unhurt. The steerable reserve worked beautifully! He is now considering one for us. But he better NEVER snap my lines!!
Jok voltatok es szerencsetek van, csak igy tovabb !!!
the lines failed due to dynamic loading. you can see the lines slack and then load repeatedly. the lines were not supporting just body weight; they were stopping body weight in fall.
WOW!!!.....GREATS PILOTS UP THERE!!!...
The engineering rule that my Engineering teacher teaches us is: ''when involving people's safety, a structure have to be 5 times stronger than the minimum required, unless you wanna end up in jail/mopping floors/loosing the engineer silence...''
Sure, but telling from the footage these two crazies pulled way more than 5g.
Fast deployment of the reserve! Good to have a controllable. I guess no boat was waiting for you. How did it feel to go free fall. Gj guys the landing was really soft
A Rogallo parachute! Haven't seen one of those since the late sixtieths.
Best thing he did was pull that spaghetti mess towards him, had that mess got to that reserve.......SAY BYE BYE! Incredible work here by the jumpers!
Indeed spectacular! A+++
Great landing! Keep going!
Srácok ez qurva jó volt ;) örülök jól vagytok ;) na ez egy cool élmény lehetett ;)
fast throw and fast opening, well done on the reserve.
Sweet red bull helmet, that magically appears @4:45
The lines hit his camera dummy
por dios !!!! , eh vistos videos pero como este nunca . Impresionante !!!!!
That was awesome to watch. But I do wonder why the tandem passenger did not have a helmet on! I don't know the rules and governing laws for paragliding but I would think that even if you don't have to wear a helmet, why the hell would you take such a big risk.
2:33 oh spaghetti !🤣
I must have watched a dozen of these accident videos and the common denominator seems to be two-fold either a noob pilot making a beginner mistake or a "Pro" flyer doing stunts. Good to know that's consistent in this sport as well
Awesome deployment, whicked looking reserve chute. The guy is right in his alculations for the line but is here a fatigure problem here?
Wow I've never seen lines snap like that, wouldn't believe it!
new adventure pal, you collect experience bravo
omg goose bumbs. that was some scary stuff. Great reaction!
Bravo !!! Agghhh Spaghetti :)
happy landing after all !
nice teamwork
Congratulations, it's the best adventure lived...I'm sure.
For some people the gift or miracle of flight is never enough!
I'd definitely go paragliding with these guys (y ) they seem fun.
Spectacular!
And this is why altitude is your friend!
that was awesome to watch
Almost spaghetti with meatballs.
Még nem láttam ilyet...nagyon durva volt !
Amazing. What sort of reserve is that (I am a complete beginner!) it looks different to the others I've seen.
It is a steerable reserve
Spectacular!
No helmet, no like
You will be reading this guys obituary soon.
nice Video
fair do's... that was awesome
that buddy hug of omg were alive was awesome
very tricky, any line could be tangled with rescue parachute.... u are lucky..
3yrs now. Anymore breaks?
When it snaps it sounds like he says "Ah spaghetti!"
I have watched this video many times, trying to figure out how they managed to get out of this difficult situation so well.
The timing of the deployment of their reserve 'chute is what makes the difference between life and death.
Their rogallo is not deployed until the airflow around them is non turbulent, as shown by the cut lines streaming straight in the airflow. Was this professionalism, or luck?...or a mixture of both?
You can imagine what would have happened if their reserve chute had become entangled with the collapsed paraglider.... at least the Mediterranean is warm in summer.
AAH Spagetti! Never a truer word spoken :-))
Think I'll just, er, watch thanks. Fabulous reserve deployment, huge advert for steerable reserves.
It's that a dominator wing that broke?
Виталий - надёжный!!! Будем летать.
Is there a reserve for the reserve?
Yea, its called life insurance.
Carl Hopkinson well said!
Carl Hopkinson haha! best answer ever
Yes, they flew with two.
What is the reason to fly without helmet at a launchsite with a rocky surface?
Pal quién distribuye Rogallo tandem? Necesito uno
and why is the passenger without the helmet? it's said its on purpose, but what's the issue?
I have never seen that happen before, was the wing rated for tandem as well as the weight?
I will stick with my Ozone Freeride lol.
so cool
Geçmiş olsun :)
love breaking gliders high, it's peaceful riding down under the laundry.
That looked like fun
AHH SPAGHETTI!!!
Looks like spaghetti when you think about it however that wouldn't be my initial thought if I was about to die. I guess this guy really likes spaghetti.
You're wrong.. :-)
He said: Azt a geci..!! which actually means: we're in sperm (in Hungarian slang) or in an other way: we're in an unexpected situation. :-)
A kedvenc videóm ...az a nyugodtság miután szétszakadt minden példás. Vagy ez a profizmus?
Nem. Ez idiotizmus.
Márk Ecsegi
Lófaszt. Ezt olyan mondja aki nem repül?
Olvasd el a többi hozzászólást. Btw egy rongydarabon lógni, nem repülés.
Márk Ecsegi
Szerintem meg ez az "igazi" repülés...
what is name/type of the reserve chute? tnks
Magyarok Mindenhol. :)
The reserve appears to fly better than the glider.
That german guy at the end..
the best speaking english person I´ve ever seen :D
Don't let these guys borrow your glider.
why you have a helmet and your passenger not?
Do you think an helmet could have make the paraglider resist the infinit ?
Aghh Spaghetti! Hahaha, great job you two.
take up fishing if you have a bad day you go home/
jupitorman Statistically fishing is the most dangerous sport in the world because of how many people drown
most normal acro session
ainda bem q tem um reserva....
Can someone please explain to me why a paragliders life in not worth sewing a 3 ring cutaway system in their rig? Followed by a steerable reserve and a skyhook system? You still would keep the worthless reserves you're already using but in this incident, you could have chopped that mess, and been flying under a perfect canopy in 75 ft! I don't get it! Then worst case scenario, you dump that triangle reserve if needed at the end...
99% of the time, Price. There are cutaway systems available (FlyTheEarth 3RS, Supair BASE, AvaSport Cutaway)
so many pools but so close to beach 😀
aztageci!
Crazy !
pal wh are you doing this...
yes your right l fell out of my fishing boat and l couldn't swim my mate pulled me back in
Looks like a scene from "Gravity"
What's the reason for no helmet for Tandem pilot?
the pilot is wearing one. The passenger in front does not have one, because he could punch out the polit teeth while doing infinite tumbling. cheers
What type of line was used?
Shouldn't he have waited a bit until the collapsed paraglider gets out of the way? To me it seemed that the reserve almost gets tangled with the lines. Luckily it only twisted a turn.
Believe it or not gravity is at work so the wind and its resistance of the pretty much useless wing as gravity is pulling them down is keeping the glider above them which in most cases of using the reserve will happen. That's why the reserve is thrown to the outside of the spin or to the side as it too will go UP next to the in the way flopping glider. Not many pilots want to cut lines then throw reserve as speed increases due to that hindrance called gravity so the faster the reserve goes out the better as they are NOT like parachutes designed to open at terminal velocity. Watch enough of these videos and you'll see the same happen in almost all of them.
They sure had a lot of time to house clean on the way down to have the glider all gathered up! I'm wondering why they didn't fold the thing! LOL!
Good flying and recovery guys! Bet it was still fun!
