- Pam and I went on a mushroom hunt, found some excellent trash to pick up and then, later on our expedition, stumbled upon Early Morels, Verpa bohemica. “True” Morels (Morchella) grow in association with elms, cottonwoods, mature apple trees, firs, and also in gardens mulched with cardboard, disturbed areas, burned land, and construction sites. Go figure. Here is the The Early Morel:
Verpa bohemica - a mushroom of questionable edibility/toxicity, although many books describe this mushroom as edible and choice, it has a storied reputation - by association - to Gyromitras. So, best you not consume this species…..but I will, thoroughly cooking them in a well ventilated space. My professor, Dr. Michael Beug, is not impressed by their flavor. Others are. This speaks to individual preferences, like with so many mushrooms and foods. This Verpa species comes up - usually - one week before the main Morchella season is in full flush. Please read up on this interesting species! Be careful. If any chemists are reading this and want a project - please analyze for monomethyl hydrazines (‘gyromitrins’). This toxin has been claimed by some to also be in Verpa bohemica - without evidence to the best of my knowledge. Loss of muscle control has been reported by some. I wonder if the suspect mushrooms were mis-identified. Don’t be alarmed - this is the way of culinary mycology. We only know which mushrooms are edible or poisonous - until chemical analytical methods became available - by the experiences of other myconauts who have consumed them previously. Same is true for most our wild foods! Have fun. Be careful. Out of an abundance of caution, I am repeating for emphasis: Do Not Consume. (Confused ? You are not alone with trying to ascertain Verpa bohemica’s edibility!) In any event, what a fun day Dr. Pam Kryskow (who filmed this) and I shared.

Years ago I was picking P. semilanceata in a hayfield near Kent Washington.
The property owner allowed others on his private land but did not like people picking mushrooms there because he believed that they left a lot of trash behind especially bottles which clogged up the threshing machine.
I explained that I thought such littering was really awful and disrespectful. I offered to pick up all the trash I could find if he would consent to allow me to stay and hunt there.
I ended up picking up a huge bag of trash including bottles and a pretty big bag of liberty caps.
It was a positive experience all around, perhaps collecting trash made my haul exceptionally lucky?
The property owner was pleased stated please come back soon.

Where I live, it's always awkward when they ask for the specific species of mushroom I'm hunting on their land because nothing special in terms of edibility grows among the liberty caps. I typically cover up my hunting as a hike, outdoors hanging about kind of thing. But it's far from the cities, so there's no trash lying about. I found a broken jerridunk once, but I disposed of it proper. It's funny though, how the liberty caps tend to reveal themselves more when you're not actively looking for them. I can just sit on a rock, breathing in the beautiful scenery, and they just "show up" in my mind. I'm not the believer of supernatural things, but I do find our subconscious deeply fascinating. I even do slight above microdosages but below tripping doses when I hunt, because the libs acquire a certain glow when I do. If I'm not eating what I pick, of course, which I always do when the season begins. Nothing beats the trip gained from "grazing" the libs and just pick and eat what I need, and leave the rest. "The songbirds became glorious choir in full, with melodies inaudible to sober ears", to quote my long lost friend.
That's awesome! My husband and I haul so much trash from any area we mush hunt. Especially near state parks.

When I go for a walk with my wife I always look out for mushrooms. She carries a big bag to collect trash. Of course the bag is filled in no time. A very dubious form of success.

This is the first time I have commented on any of your videos Paul, but I have been watching and learning from you for the toast few years. For that I am truly grateful for your work and everything you have helped bring to light. Aside from that this is why I am writing.
My daughter said to me once “Dad! Dad! Today is earth day!” I looked at her and said “shouldn’t every day be earth day?” (Chuckling)
I think it’s silly to dedicate one day to our awesome planet. Every day is earth day.
On the ironic side of this I work for a tree service. I don’t deforest large areas, I operate a 30 ton crane and take the ones over house and ones that are a danger to peoples houses.
I am just starting to read (Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms 3rd edition) so far it’s super fascinating reading. I hope to one day to become a good cultivator and forget such as you.

I got burned out on Earth Day decades ago. But at least there is such a thing and it might help some folks make the connection. On the matter of you being a tree guy, you have a direction connection to so much substrate for mushrooms. If you could regularly get your hands on some woodchips... the possibilities are endless. I am also someone who when they go out likes to pick up trash! Some people ask me if that is what I am doing and I say, why yes! Sometimes I find good patches by just going out and picking up garbage left behind by others! We all must do our part to pick up. I just started getting interested in mushrooms after moving from WA to TN. Walking a trail one day I seen a dozen or more varieties within a few hundred feet! One of them happen to be chanterelles so now I want to know them all lol.
I just found a big patch of half free morels. Most too late to pick but definitely a spot to visit early season next year .

Im out hiking the Appalachian Trail and everyone is taking about morels and chicken of the woods. The majority of us are very strict on the Leave no Trace philosophy and picking up trash is very common to see along the trail. Turns out so is Mushroom picking. Happy Earth day!

I love Paul Stamets and his contributions. I wish he would do more videos like this one. Picking up trash is a noble pursuit, but sometimes I fear it gets in the way of more important conservation efforts. It's a feel good action that MAY help the environment, but not as much as removal of alien species and restoration and protection of natural areas I feel.
