Waves Audio meltdown 2023 - Who wants a Subscription?

  • In an absolute clown move earlier this week, Waves audio managed to piss off their entire customer base, while many others joined the outrage in solidarity. Now they are backpedaling as fast as they can & doing damage control around a situation they could have completely avoided with even the smallest amount of foresight. What's your take? I'd love to hear it in the comments.

    It's sad, I used to really like Waves but I have forced myself to wean my projects from any of their plugins. The updating process is such a horrific nightmare it stopped my production for several days when I bought a new computer until I could get the plugins to work.

    Plugin "name dropping", is a pour substitute for expirience gained long before, the notion of such really began to matter, I started out in this line of business in the early 80'ies where effects were bucket brigade delays, and tape echos where the only things available - well some were travelling around with AKG's BX20 or a furrman spring reverb. But else was it a few Klark 33-band ... but all were hardware. You couldn't elevate yourself thru the glass ceiling by just liturgically following a canonised flow ... you needed to learn, listen and experience - and not studying the merits of a guru. Perhaps we were way too pragmatical back then - disqualifying for making real art and "wipe" and make enough of a difference?

    Was going to pull the trigger on a LV1 system . Probably going to have to go with a QL-5 now.

      It will be interesting if we ever find out how this really turns out for their hardware sales... it can't be good.

      @@DcSoundOp I doubt it, given how quiet the manufacters have been over whether theyre able to build and ship their products in this mess that is the chip shortage, its unlikey waves will release sales figures. It's also a great opportunity for someone to release an opensource equivelenat of some of the waves hardware...

    Between this, WoTC, and a couple other companies I can't think of right now, I get the feeling there's like a cohort of MBA's who've been trained on and are pushing "promise" breaking cash grabs as some sort of "new" business modernization. But there's now also an entire generation of content makers like you that have become a (very welcome) buffer between corporate marketing/messaging and consumers. It's in your best interest to make at least some content about controversial topics like this, which gives a very real and direct platform for people to voice their concerns. Corps can actually see the reach of videos, and the staggering amount of comments against their actions, in numbers. I saw videos about finding alternatives to Waves plugins before I saw videos with any context or analysis of their decision. People were immediately talking about jumping ship, no questions.

    I honestly really enjoy using Waves for live mixing. It gives me a lot options and I am not doing a lot of fancy stuff. I normally use a channel strip from SSL or something like that. But it definitely gives you a lot more creative options than a console DSP. But a lot of the new consoles are loading themselves with built in Plug-ins which is really cool. But I am hoping Waves will open up Super Rack to allow the hosting of third-party plugins. It would take them up a notch! And secure their future in the live world for a long time.

    I'm glad I will be able to keep using my current plugins, however I think this will stop me updating them again, and will just plan to phase them out, there are better options now for most of the waves plugins from other plugin companies, and moving to subscription there are other companies i'd much rather use.

    Absolutely agree! I’m glad the new consoles have their own built in plugins and emulations now that are more than capable of doing the job and filling those special use cases(onboard multiband comps/ dynamic EQ’s)

    A video made by an adult, for adults. Thank you.
    How does this affect me? First of all, I'm not a big fan of Waves.
    For instance I own every Eventide, FabFilter, PSP, and Boz Digital plugins - plus all those that come 'free' with the NI Ultimate Bundle - so I've got options.
    The day Waves force a subscription model down my throat is the day I stop using them - if I haven't by now. On top of the above I've listed, I've got plenty of great, individual PA/Bx plugins, and about 100 UAD amazing plugins in my toolbox, maybe more.
    Waves have got some great plugins still (I own 17 individual, plus all the Abbey Road ones - however many that is), but my workflow is not bound by - or slave to - their plugins like the major studios and tours are. I don't cater to stadium divas or aging stars that can't sing their own songs anymore. I'm good with my toolbox - I record, I print, and I mix with it.
    Full disclosure: I've had some professional (unrelated to this topic) dealings with Waves (maybe 10 years ago). In Hollywood parlance, they were "difficult." In plain English, they're incredibly arrogant - even when accounting for the inevitable cultural difference. I've also consulted for Microsoft Studios (yes, MS owns and operates an array of ultra high end recording studios in a large city block size complex/building in that town where it rains a lot) and they couldn't have been nicer and friendlier.
    My point being: I wasn't surprised by Waves thinking they could dictate to the market. I was surprise they forgot to run all the numbers (especially those into the distant future). For a company run by bean counters, that was most surprising. Then again, look what happened at (and to) Boeing. Sometimes, you are your own worst enemy.

    (Edit: I reconsidered my views in the responses)
    Ohh hey, another company that doesn't deserve money! Take note, everyone.
    Isn't the only reason most of us don't pirate shit just cause we like to support them? Seems like a strange market to extend one's slimy tendrils into.

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  Год назад

      Most people I know (professionals) don’t like pirating because it is theft. You cant really be mad at a corporation for being slimy (not saying they’re not) if you are advocating stealing people’s work. Just my opinion though, thanks for the message.

    • @Gnurklesquimp2
      @Gnurklesquimp2 Год назад

      @@DcSoundOp Nothing stops most of us from pirating other than wanting to support them, so it's kinda stupid to betray a relationship with the customer. I don't own anything pirated myself, but I do have a hard time supporting something I can't get behind.
      I was hasty, though... Sometimes I forget the whole company isn't defined by those few people making calls like this, and the others may very well be who end up paying if the company doesn't do as well.
      As usual, the best advice is to just voice your concerns and otherwise go elsewhere for your products. if Waves doesn't deserve your money, their competition still should, another thing I hadn't considered.
      I've been frustrated with greedy companies lately, so I kinda got too used to feeling this way, looking at terribly predatory and manipulative companies who genuinely are earning far too much money as it is, more than they actually even know what to do with.
