- San Francisco residents say Waymo driverless cars are yet again keeping them up at night with repeated honking. This comes after Waymo issued several fixes this past week. Alyssa Goard reports.

So you're telling me that the people who programmed these cars to drive themselves can't program them to not honk if they are in that specific parking lot???

@@iamredemption08 then either that person is as blind as a bat to get hit from a Waymo car or the Waymo Car itself has a sensor so bad it can't detect anything around it. There really is no reason for a Waymo car to be honking in that lot lol.
Ticket, impound, fine per vehicle for noise after midnight. Any other driver would be arrested and car impounded if they sat in a parking lot honking through the night.
How freaking difficult is it to set up a geofence for no honking?
Better question, why honk at all when they should know it's a fellow Waymo car blocking them. Use a radio like WiFi or whatever.

It’s not that it’s hard, but imagine if they hit someone in that parking lot because the geofence said stay quiet. Basically 1 single failure and they are off the streets.

A waymo car honking at another waymo car doesn’t even make sense. It’s not as if the cars can hear each other. They could use silent electronic signals between each other, and make no noise at all.
Remember when driverless cars were marketed as how they would be able to communicate with each other through 5g and stuff? Turns out they communicate using honking instead just like regular cars with a driver.
Only a lawsuit will resolve the issue, Waymo doesn’t care about near by residents.
Or maybe spending money on better engineers.

I had an idiot relative that would come down my quiet cul-du-sac and beep when she got there, beep when she left, even after I asked her not to. I was mortified for my neighbors.

Goes to show these cars aren't truly safe. If they can't fix a simple problem like this after repeated attempts, that suggests Waymo doesn't really understand how the cars work. Seems only a matter of time before there's a tragedy due to software error and/or security issue.

1) artificially intelligent full self driving vehicles should only be able to communicate by electronic/radio signals, not honking 2) shouldn’t the waymo fleet have a private lot away from any residential area that is owned by Google for charging purposes.
they do have a private lot away from residences, the issue is response time, so they are attempting to reduce wait times by having the waymos stationed in the city, hence this lot of waymos.
The honking is dumber than you think. It's not for communication between cars, it's for alerting humans....

Dumb programmers. How do you fix the problem? Write in the code that horn will be disabled when you approach 10 meters of that parking structure. That's all you have to do.

Waymo should have the cars drive in a holding pattern away from the lot and only allow 1 car in at a time.

The cars are programmed to honk when other cars are too close. The cars are programmed to park at this location every night. They can easily deactivate the horn when the cars go to park at this location. Easy-peasy
This is what happens when you hire programmers who never go outside. Zero real world experience or common sense. They probably don't even know how to drive.

The cars are honking to warn other cars that they are getting too close to it. The same way you would honk if you thought another car was going to drive into you.

This fantastic update coupled with the news that a Tesla big rig departed the I-80 roadway in the Sierras for reasons unknown at 3:30 am this morning--hit some trees and then caught fire, requiring I-80 (both directions) to be shut down @ Colfax due to toxic smoke from the burning batteries. Per CHP, a 0.5 mile-radius buffer around a burning EV semi is required per their SOP. Many hours later, the batteries are still burning and I-80 is still shut down. Technology so reliable and bulletproof you'd be inclined to think Microsoft was involved in its development.

The SimCity 2013 game has the code to solve this. Albeit it as a simulation error for game users, it would solve the issue for Waymo. (The first car parked at the first house, not their individually assigned house).
