George Zucco in whatever role was the penultimate straight man, even when playing a witch doctor, the absolute master of understatement.

Zucco was my favorite villain, whether he played Professor Moriarty in Shelock Holmes, a vampire or just a bad guy, he was the best. Something in the eyes were absolutely diabolical.

Proof that what makes a movie, that holds together the director's & the actors' talent is a good sound story.
Otherwise they all go to dumb waste.

It was 1943 and gas rationing was in effect. This car (05:55) sports both the basic A (4 gal/wk) and the essential worker B (8 gal/wk). Wonder if this was a perk of working at a film studio?

  • @lastrada52

Made by PRC -- a leading poverty row film studio. It has all the creepiness & music of old Universal Pictures but the Universal movies were far better filmed, the actors could act & they never had awkward moments from poor directors (Hold That Ghost with Abbott & Costello was excellent & made around the same time). I do agree with one poster who said the storm effects were the best part & the occasional music was good.
The tall 6'5 mustached simpleton Andy at the hotel is Glenn Strange -- played the bartender at the Long Branch Saloon in all those Gunsmoke episodes with James Arness. He also played the Frankenstein monster twice -- with Boris Karloff in House of Frankenstein & in the 1948 Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein film. He appeared in numerous TV shows. It appears that this big man could've played in more comedy roles. He was also the 8th generation great-grandson of John Rolfe & Pocahontas through his maternal grandfather.
Byron Foulger, the mousey guy with glasses & a folder filled with money was an incredibly successful character actor whose career started in 1932 lasted until he died in 1970. He was still employed in dual roles (Mr. Guerney & train engineer Wendell Gibbs) in the TV series Petticoat Junction. He appeared in many TV series (Superman) & films. His last was with Kirk Douglas in There Was a Crooked Man.
Charles Middleton played the sheriff -- he was famous for having played the villainous emperor Ming the Merciless in the old Flash Gordon series.
Noel Madison, the gangster, seems to be an actor who could play Edgar G Robinson roles if Robinson wasn't available. He did appear with James Cagney a few times. George Zucco often played suave villains like Professor Moriarity in early Sherlock Holmes films with Basil Rathbone (Universal).
