Proof that you can make a genuinely tense and frightening film without blood and gore, swearing or CGI. Every aspect of this film the script, acting and the atmosphere created were superb. Thanks for uploading.
There's nothing wrong with blood as it keeps us alive, gore we all are inside and swear words are just normal words taken from other languages like the "f" word, which comes from the old German language, meaning piercing, and it was a normal, everyday word, meaning just that! If I'll say " sugar" instead of " shit" which is again a normal, medical word for human or animal excrement , then the word "sugar " will become a swear word. It's the way we say it! Like the word "bloody"! So, don't worry if you come across all the mentioned above. But you didn't mention a murder, which so many films are all about. I'm glad you've enjoyed this story. 😊
When I watch a horror movie I want A good scare not discussed from blood and gore. The original the Haunting From 1963 I believe still scares the c*** out of me. And I know the movie inside out. It's scary, not gory. I think any horror movie should be filled in black & white. Even today, it adds to the fear. And there's so much more you can do with light and shadow no c. G. I no greens greens, none of the other c*** Just absolute fear from camera angles and the gray areas. Gotta be a good scare
I saw this at a drive-in movie theater with my father, when I was six years old, when this movie first came out in 1964. It really creeped me out and I've remembered it all these years later. So interesting and amazing to see it with old man eyes, in the present day.

Great movie. Never take for granted what an elder tells you in all seriousness like Grandma Lanier. You see it in their eyes. Their face. The wise are aware of the details and surroundings as in this film. Was so glad Grandma survived the witch. In newer films, they kill off the devout.

This was very well done, except the ending happened all at once. Everyone was outside within 30 seconds of the crypt being set ablaze. That part could have been better. But, overall, I agree with majority of comments about not needing cursing, nudity, computer generation images, etc. Appreciate the upload, hello from a USA audience. Peace to all.
1:11:05 - “Bar the door” This movie is quite interesting from an ethnological perspective of (primarily) Scottish and (secondarily) English (or Irish, or Welsh) customs of the 16th to 18th centuries. It highlights the respective pagan mythologies of that time period and their relationship with the Christian liturgical calendar. “Get Up and Bar the Door” is a medieval Scots ballad about a battle of wills between a husband and wife. The ballad observes a possible consequence of being stubborn when carried to ludicrous lengths, since by being stubborn they lost their Martinmas puddings and left their persons and household open to crime. Now, Martinmas is also called Old Halloween or All Hallows Eve, and was celebrated on November 11 (Samhain); while Roodmas was the Feast of the Cross, celebrated on May 3 (Beltane). Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, is celebrated on February 2 (Imbolc). Lammas, also known as Loaf Mass Day, is celebrated on August 1. It is also the same date as the Gaelic harvest festival Lughnasadh (Lughnasa). You will notice that these traditional pagan dates (celebrating the 4 seasonal periods between the 4 solstices & equinoxes) correspond to 4 liturgical dates on the Christian calendar. Incidentally, the 4 solstices & equinoxes are Litha, Mabon, Yule, & Ostara on the pagan calendar. So, this Roodmas sacrifice in the movie is a Spring ritual to celebrate Springtime (or the Beltane season which occurs after the vernal equinox of Ostara). Ostara is March 20, and Roodmas or Beltane is the mid-point of Spring on May 3. These dates and time periods aren’t exact, but are close approximations and fairly consistent. So, when it comes to witchcraft, paganism, and the corresponding Christian liturgical holidays, this movie production really excelled at getting the details right! It’s very rare to see that kind of historical & ethnological detail so thoroughly researched and presented in a film. Truly impressive!
That was a genuinely good chiller. From the lighting, cinematography, direction, and acting. The end seemed a bit hurried, but the pacing throughout the film really built suspense and unease. The slow, deliberate movement of Vanessa and the way she never blinked was genuinely creepy. What's more, this was shot down the street from where I lived as a kid. Always love to see films made at Shepperton Studio.
@ Yes I know it has happened in real life to but I was wondering why in this movie they acted as if it was legal to rip out graves and no family members could say anything about it!
