I'm 72 and back in the day the West was looking to the East for enlightenment. We did not close out other spiritual concepts but for me it was a finding process. In the end I came back to Christianity with open arms and love for Jesus.
What a fantastic interview!! Donovans sharings in this are very profound. I love the album too. I 100% believe him when he says he is the Gaelic Shaman. Unlike many musicians, he lives up to what he says. In his song Sunshine Super Man he says "Cause I made my mind up, you're going to be mine (forever to be mine)" was released in 1965. It became a hit song with the primary intend being that his love Linda would hear it and reunite with him. Now to this day all these years later they are still married. So when he says he's the Gaelic Shaman, I believe that. It must be a very honorable role and perhaps many people don't realize that.
I am a Christian and love Donovan's music. All of it. I really loved playing his songs on guitar and now enjoy playing them on the flute. He's one of the best songwriters of all time.
The music he put out in the '60s sounded like it came straight from heaven. It helped me get through that generation. He's one of the greatest ever did it PERIOD!
Yes he did the same for me. He doesn't always speak very effectively but his contribution to my well being as a teenager was immense and I love him for that.
What is more beautiful? Donovan singing the songs he wrote, or Donovan simply speaking so articulately. And about his superlative experiences. This gorgeous man. This gorgeous talent. He blesses us.
I went to see Donovan in concert June 1, 1975 at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. Since I arrived 'bout an hour early I decided to take a walk 'round the block which lead me to the alley behind the theatre. Up pulls a limo to the rear entrance 'n out steps Donovan! I spoke to him briefly 'n he let me take some photos. An hour later I was in the audience. What a most memorable first time seein' him...lucky me! Saw 'n spoke to him again years later in Monterey, CA.
THIS is the kind of interview that TV used to do, but has not done for a very long time. One that just allows the subject to TALK. RUclips is now the go-to platform for in-depth interviews, and more power to it! I've learned more about Donovan in the last hour than I knew over the past 60 years. 👍
What a very intelligent guy, and hip. I like how he demystifies drug taking at every opportunity. Don’t say “renounce” taking drugs, stop taking drugs! He corrects the well meaning host. 👍👍👍👍
He is really off key here, his recorded songs from decades ago are incredibly beautiful. But so sharp-minded with an incredible grasp of detail at his age as age is known and agreed to here on this planet. He ignores bypasses age in some respects, that which doesnt serve his immovable immutable dedication to his creative passions and perspectives. His stories are told with such power and specifically guided detail that speed along and mesmerize. Not many can go on the internal ride he offers, they dont have the mental grasp and therefore interest or patience. Donovan, magical miracle musical man. Parallel soul dimensional magician and poet. I remember my love for you and bring it forward into the eternal moment of now. You were and are still an aspect of the divine I am comfortable resonating with and expanding perspective with. Love always. You are the magical adventure 🍃🕊️🌟 🤍💫⭐
Having lived through the sixtys in st Ives Cornwall. Rember well Donovan and gypsy dave before fame and after on the beach with us locals what a time to be alive magical . I bought gift of a flower when released and later played to my children fantastic. Great to see Donovan again we are roughly the same age live long man
Donovan is a genius in music 🎶 one of the best im 48 like his music since the mid 80s. I hear his music on the classic rock radio or go to RUclips radio. Thanks for sharing this Donovan is great. ✌️
I was working in Atlanta's Grear Speckled Bird office when Donavan flashed in and gave everybody a beautiful rose and ran right out!! In surprise we looked at each other and asked- was that Donaven? It was a a wonderful moment of Love!
Loved Donovan's music since FAIRYTALE, the first album I bought. That was a long time ago, many moons and many concerts and albums have passed since. Donovan lives on, a majestic person.
I met Donovan in Liverpool back in 2002 during the annual International Beatles Festival. He autographed his biography for me and performed live at The Empire Theatre.
Amazing 😊 the childrens side is beautiful it has inspired me so much to learn guitar and my children absolutely love it. Thank you Donovan from 🏴
Wonderful to see Donovan and to finally get to hear him speak of the beginning of his career & his music. I still listen to his Wonderful music. I love Atlantis, Sunshine Superman. Donovan is totally unappreciated. Such a great talent and was there with the Beatles during the Pyschodelic years. Donovan good to see you, God bless on your journey.
I saw Donavan open for Yes in Chicago back when. I think it was Cosmic Wheels for Donavan. Yes was a really big group then. They were all on the side of the stage watching his set. When you teach the Beatles guitar you doing pretty good.
My not yet wife and I saw him this same tour with Yes I think '77 s.m.u.Dallas,Tx. And from the front row,not our seats but noticed no one took em so we did till Yes came on and the rightful owners sent us back to our seats.I ❤Donavan. Oh the memories 🌷
Thank you for this. I've watched it more than once. The first concert I ever saw was Donovan's in the US in 1969. He played the sort of guitar I wanted to play and wrote the sorts of songs I wanted to sing. What a beautiful man with a beautiful soul, then and now.
I saw and met Donovan at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia… he autographed my ticket stub, which I gave to another fan. During that particular tour, Donovan invited people to come up and play. I was asked to play one of my songs by his manager, but had put my music on hold for a while… I didn’t feel comfortable getting on stage with Donovan, unprepared, and having drunk a few red wines. Still regret not doing it… as I could have also played that famous green, acoustic guitar. I did get back into my music after that, and have recorded several albums, since… and am working on my 7th. That experience helped jolt me back into creativity… it certainly reawakened my muse. I started doing music at age 6, and keep going. Thanks to Donovan for his amazing contribution to musical culture and beyond. His ego can be a bit much, but that’s the artist’s way for a lot of us.
I saw Donovan live at a long ago NYC Beatle Fest. Just him and his guitar. His vibrato was more so but other than that, he sounded like he did in the 60s and 70s.
I pleasantly recall purchasing my first album, circa 1967, which was Donovan's Sunshine Superman. I carried it under one arm as I bicycled back to my folks home, eager to play it. Still a great favorite with so many deeply peaceful and reverant songs.
The first time I ever heard Donovan was in the 1960s when a girlfriend brought over her only record which her postman father had found lost in the post. After I played my only record, the Beatles Sgt Pepper, she put hers on and I was mesmerized. I ended up buying nearly every record he made and in the late 1990s I saw him play at Camden lock London. It was just him and a guitar but he was masterful. After the show I leapt up onto the small stage and had a few words and got his autograph before shaking his hand and leaving as high as a kite. Donovan is a very prolific and beautiful songwriter whose music sends you to another dimension, may he continue to do so. However, he seems to put great store in his Irish and Scottish roots, though his surname Leitch is very common all over Britain but particularly in England. Though all us on these islands are related in one way or another.
Donovan has been my favourite Magical Minstrel since I was born lol 😅 I’ve been lucky enough to see him twice (and David Bowie twice) but Donovan is my favourite ever. Our Daughter is named Saffron too…bcs I saw him when 18 and then my Hub took me for my 50th Birthday…I’m hoping to make the Hat Trick. 👍😅 A Beautiful Soul Donovan with the voice of an Angel. Thankyou Bright Blessings 💙🦢💙
Wonderful to have a proper in depth interview like this. 'A Gift...' is one of my absolute favourite albums, and I've shared it with my daughter who loves it too. There's something I really love about the stereo mix though...
I still have my boxed set in my record rack underneath my turntable. It's there along with almost every other album Donovan ever recorded. In the 1960s you could buy infra-red film for your 35mm camera and Kodak would develop it for you.
Thank you Donovan ! I have all your stuff. But one thing seriously, I, and many many others I know, aren't fans of MONO ! A parallel STEREO version would've been very beneficial indeed, especially for our big stereo systems that we spent 1000's on ! Our stereo headphones will also be uninterested. We have zillions of mono recordings and we have always assumed that mono was just a method of record companies to cover up or hide any poor mixes, tonal balances and errors in original tapes etc. We feel that MONO took the long way home in the mid sixties at some point and yielded to the far superior stereo format. I have all your recordings in stereo and EPIC had such a vast stereo catalogue, especially C&W music. Cheers.
thank you. 'gift' 'saved' me at 15 in 1985 after my family moved from wales to arizona. accordingly, as life progressed for me, i often worried about D :) it's good to hear the fellow, and to have heard him sing now. the bardic tradition is alive in we5t p49ua, we're all lit up out here. or as i say.. the barred. like the banned.
First song I ever learned to play on guitar was "Catch the Wind" and it still makes me cry every time I play it. The hit version was him trying to sound like Dylan (not good), but the version he did on his Greatest Hits LP is pure magic.
My richest memory of Donavan live was at the famous Hollywood Bowl. A huge mountain of pillows on which he sat and played with no backup players flanked by two cones of incense. His music filled the bowl which is designed for the philharmonic, yet lacked nothing for fullness. Thanks for the gifts.
The other day I came across his single, 'There is a mountain'. Signed by my older brother and music mentor Chris,, who was tragically killed in 1976. I thought it would be great if Donovan could counter sign it. A good reason to go to Ireland.
that was a treat, thank you. I've had the record in my collection for decades. Since you placed it on your channel, I've been enjoying all the new bands also under your State51 Conspiracy. Bravo!

When I was 15 years, I asked "Santa Claus" for this very unusual boxed set. A Gift: From a Flower to a Garden. I was/am such a Donovan fan. This interview and the kid's song was delightful and so nostalgic for me.❤
Wow, I didn't know Donovan was such a authentically elevated spiritual being, but it all makes sense now. I remember his music as being my entry way into the milieu of the 1960's and served as introduction to singles by the Beatles such as "Penny Lane" & "Strawberry Fields." "Wear your love like heaven" was a good song. I remember the same year or so, a commercial on tv used that song to promote a female body spray. I think the spray was called "Love." Not sure. I guess Donovan didn't own the publishing rights to the song at the time.
I met Donovan in Aberdeen in the early 1990’s. He was enjoying a resurgence due to The Happy Mondays endorsement / affiliation. Anyway I asked him who eventually picked up the glass from the street…..! I can’t remember the answer though.

Love your music Donovan.I too come from Scots,Irish and Welsh. So I feel your music on a Celtic Level 🏴🇦🇺
Donovan is looking old and tired. So am I, thankyou Donovan for all the music and joy you gave me.
He was young for a long time but age eventually catches up with everyone. Here he is still lucid and able to recollect things from his youth.
This 76 year old wants to thank you for the most marvelous music of my youth. All the best.

I saw him solo in Belfast 10 years ago, the singing voice was all but gone, but the amazing stories and anecdotes remained. I’m glad I went.
He was still able to sing well up to the mid nineties. Check out his appearance on the Howard Stern show. He is fabulous.

You are part of that fabric!!! How beautiful!
thanks dear donovan,my mantra is wear your love like heaven,a song that is so dear to my heart and soul. so inspired.
For fifty-eight years I have been inspired by Donovans' music, a truly wonderful musician and a remarkable man...
Loved Donovan's music since FAIRYTALE, the first album I bought. That was a long time ago, many moons and many concerts and albums have passed since. Donovan lives on, a majestic person.

I have always loved Donovan’s music ,,,I am forever thankful ,,, for your inspiration as well ,,,
interesting to hear the mindset (of he, George, etc) when they were moving into the post-psychedelic phase

In the 60 - 70's used to love Donovan and bought several of his albums.
The album cover that the video show, "Gift From a Flower To a Garden" was probably his best of all. Something from another time and place.

I have the box set Original double album, .. Mad John came down from Birmingham
😱 OMG!!!! That was great!!!!!!!
I had most of Donovan's '60s album as a teen and was able to see him at the Bottom Line in 1987.
Wonderful video. 😊
Wonderful to have a proper in depth interview like this. 'A Gift...' is one of my absolute favourite albums, and I've shared it with my daughter who loves it too.

Almost never mentioned is what a brilliant guitarist he was,(and is,) as well. Many great songs but be forewarned, a sudden awareness of hearing "The Starfish On The Toast" from a distance can kill a moment of sexual intimacy quicker than the maid yelling "FIRE!"
Loved the “quite rightly” reference. Not sure if it was on purpose or not :-)
Saw Donovan at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival (also The Who, The Doors, Hendrix, many more).
It was a great setting for Donovan playing a late afternoon set in sunshine. Was fab.☆♡

Something spiritual about the song...
I met Donovan in Aberdeen in the early 1990’s. He was enjoying a resurgence due to The Happy Mondays endorsement / affiliation.
Anyway I asked him who eventually picked up the glass from the street…..! I can’t remember the answer though.
A musician we was almost breast fed with 💐
Hell, I just turned 78 and I can’t sing anymore either but than again neither can Dylan!

So much for his intention for a short intro.
