Beautiful. An opportunity to talk with, and listen to, a musical genius, and people are goofing around like its a convenience store. But he just shines it on most naturally...
Thanks for recording this. The footage is so clear. I try to teach some of my students how to chop and staccato chords on the guitar like Donovan but it's hard. Not easy to do. A couple of my students did get it though. I've known really good lead guitarists that couldn't do it very well. I love Donovan's voice and writing as well.
You did us a wonderful service in releasing this video so we could see it! He is truly in his element here, playing to a small respectful audience in a small intimate space. It's a shame he forgot the words to "Starfish on Toast", it's one of my favourite songs from "A Gift From a Flower to a Garden" album..
Ah! Seen Donovan in 77 backing Yes. A full band doing most of his 60's hits! Last song he does on here too. Wonderful! Outstanding! Whole arena-bout 10'00- going crazy with admiration! People demanded he come back for an encore. He did, & done Atlantis! & a couple of others. I said to my friend, "Whoa. Yes might be getting jealous! Seriously, he was that good & people loved him so much!
Thanks so much for sharing I saw him about a half month prior to your house visit in Richfield Ohio on Aug 17 of 1977 He had one of the best backing bands I have ever seen and I have seen a few in my time The Dukes backing Donovan Opening for Yes and getting encores! They were amazing and so was Yes
He looks so young. I guess he was, yikes. Let's see he would be 31 here. I did a house concert recently. It was very very nice. Folks actually listen carefully. It kind of bothered me here when Donovan (Thee Donovan) was singing/ Playing and people were talking. What!? Weird. It is natural to want to talk I understand. I would just want to suck up as much as I could if I were there. But anyway...It's Very very cool interview. Thanks so much :)
talking over/using texting over the music performer seems to be the norm these days especially on the headliner. I find it very rude to do. take a few pictures a micro video are fine but you are disconnecting with the performer or even disregarding their life purpose to share and communicate/connect with others in song. I really want to be at one of the shows he's doing in San francisco in october 2016 because I've yet to see him live (because tickets were too expensive, in this case they sold out on me in advance) but the venue is so close to my neighborhood, I'll walk up and listen outside if I must/don't get door ticket and if I'm not turned away
I remember when I found out what that line said : "Im just mad about fourteen (year old girls)". That was in the live album from L.A. Up to that time he always sang (in the original "Im just mad about photein"") . It's his accent and he just left it that way, so we never knew what it meant. Of course, those are the "teenie boppers" who adored him. Didnt mean he was having sex with them ! I wish the whole video were here. I could watch this for at least an hour. That's my favorite guitar of his ; I. too. love the stars and the moon (I call it MY moon). And the purple color is beautiful. This may be silly, but one of my fave tunes is "I love my Shirt".
Great video quality. Him playing to a party like this is almost a nod to the 1966 "A Boy Called Donovan" film. This was while he was on tour with Yes. Not his preferred bag, obviously. But he clearly saw the upside, especially since most people who knew his name probably didn't know he was still around. I haven't seen it said, but I have a feeling Donovan was a huge influence on Jon Anderson. Both lads from the north, and Donovan was given to abstract word play in lieu of concrete story-telling. I would also be curious to have heard what Donovan thought about Scottish songwriters of the 70's like Gerry Rafferty.
DOnovan performed a Beautiiful full version of Local Boy CHop Wood in 1981 on a TV show called Night at The Improv..it;s buried in my storage locker on a VHS since 1981. wish I knew what tape was on.
More people like Donovan, well we will have a beautiful world. Peace people join the new hippies, we move against all the hate and destruction. Ignore the world that has been created and make a new ,fantastic one. Do you understand economics , and feel that you contribute to politics .. that your vote makes a difference. Of course it does not ...lets move to love people and break away from what has been created for us, do you want to be part of this ??
14:30 by this time everyone behind were in their own little worlds yapping amongst themselves seeming to have lost interest, and the interviewer had his own little private show with him playing his requests !...lol
Concerning the song at 9:56 Donavon has played music with Brian Jone's grandson. I think it is interesting that he has kept a connection to Brian Jones even up to this day.
This guy is just so laid back and mellow.
His energy when he’s singing rock....wow!
He's so amazing, he even does his own backup guitar vocally. My fav of all time.
Long live peace and love. ✌️
Long live Donovan. ❤️
Thanks for posting this. Donovan is criminally underrated. My favourite artist and im 27 years old.
Beautiful. An opportunity to talk with, and listen to, a musical genius, and people are goofing around like its a convenience store.
But he just shines it on most naturally...
Looks still so young in 77. We will miss this generation when they go!
"Its easier to drop a pill than sort your life out." Enough said. :)
musicisbrilliant Morrison fan on a Donovan clip? I’ve found my soulmate
Depends on the pill
@@buddhastaxi666 Yeah, thats a pretty good point. Psychedelics aint no easy ride.
Donovan was such a cutie pie back then, and I love that guitar too.
Donovan created the most interesting, musical, and entertaining songs just fiddling around with one or two chords sometimes

How the heck is he singing so good without anythiiiiing he's such an impressive person I'm in awe... So woke... Such a goo musician
Thanks for uploading this, very enjoyable..
Donovan is such a great singer/composer/musician! He rules!
I love this. Donovan always has something valid to say. My only annoyance here was with the camera person falling asleep. 🤗🎼
Fascinating to see a clip of Donovan I have not seen before. Love the Zemaitis Moon hole guitar!!!! Keith Smart (Zemaitis owners club).
I think this is the best Donovan interview I have ever seen (and I've seen them all). The interviewer is low-key and just great.

Donovan with Yes?!?! What an Amazing combo what the heck
I wish there were footage of this tour with a band! I was there at Oakland Calif show....was amazing
Thank you very much for posting this video, I love it!! Good job!
HAHA! After he sings "I'm just mad about 14 year old girls" he's says something like "this way back in '66" just not to sound creepy
So cute
Wait wouldn't that make him 20
@TopMod Twit.
@@kornholekid6974 And he’s singing about electrical banana - no confusion there….. I always wondered about the fourteen lyric …
thank you so much for this INCREDIBLE interview!!!!!
Karen
Great video. Thank you very much for sharing. I especially love the close ups of his Zemaitis "Blue Moon" acoustic guitar!
Who lives in the museum now. 🥺
Good call on the "Starfish on the Toast" request. That's one of my favorites of his.

Good Idea Moxie96. I really hope you can get in. Then come back and tell me what happened. Good Luck! Dean
Handsome, gentle fellow back then.

Thank you for sharing this gem interview of yours Terry I loved it Donovan is truly one of a kind just saw him play live last week
Speaks more sense as a so called "hippy" far more than the modern, conservative society.
Thank you so much for sharing!

HIGH STRESS TY ARTIST LIFE HIGH STRESS
People thought you could smoke banana peels like pot after this song came out.
How the heck did you get Donovan to your house? Were you the tour promoter in Milwaukee or something...or just had the best weed in town?
