    Never run plastic through a paper shredder That plastic will wrap around the spindle you'll have to open it up and pull them out with tweezers

      Correct, the ziplock bags should only be used to distribute and saturate the oil into the paper, the ziplock bags should be removed before insertion.

    Easier yet oil one sheet then lay another one on top and run through , skip the plastic bag

    Just a caution here from a 1st time shredder oiler- Lubricator oil is THIN. Cut the bottle tip smaller than you think you need. I spilled shredded oil, which is mostly canola oil, all over the end of my shredder and onto the floor. MESS. I snipped off to about 1/8 inch opening, and that was easily too big.

    not sure plastic in a paper shredder is a good idea.

    I am pretty sure he didn’t intend to imply running the plastic bag through the shredder-he was showing the action of putting paper in the machine without removing it from the bag. I am sure he was assuming we have common sense.

      Larry, you will be surprised to hear that YES, I intended viewers to insert the oil saturated paper WITH the plastic bag into the shredder. There's no good way to handle an oil saturated sheet of paper unless it is in a bag. Some viewers have commented that the plastic bag would get tangled in the shredder, but I've never had a problem like that. Viewers who are worried about the plastic bag can try putting a sheet of paper in the shredder without a bag, and then squirt the lube oil onto the paper as it is being shredded in the machine. The idea is to get a thin coating of oil on the blades and mechanism.

    couldn't you just sandwich the oil between two pieces of paper instead of using a plastic bag?

    • @johnkerwin
      @johnkerwin  3 года назад

      Yes, you can but it’s kind of messy. I make the bags up with paper and oil ahead of time and store them near the shredder. That way they’re ready to use when you need one, and there is no mess.

    Show us a demo, and tell us how long you've been doing that. Why did you choose mineral oil over canola, baby oil (same stuff), motor oil, or other oils?

    • @larryboylarry5557
      @larryboylarry5557 5 месяцев назад

      vegetable oils oxidize and become like plastic. never use vegetable oil. never. baby oil is mineral oil with fragrance.

    Does mineral oil help to not attract dust on the blades?

    • @johnkerwin
      @johnkerwin  4 года назад +4

      It’s not meant for that. It simply applies a consistent coat of oil to the mechanical parts. By the way, this mineral oil is the same stuff that is in many of the commercial shredder lube sheets that you buy for $1 a sheet!

    • @watcher818
      @watcher818 23 дня назад

      Mineral oil or WD40 is not good for the machine. WD40 evaps too fast and mineral oil too thin. WD40 as a whole is not a lubricant, it is made to loosen rusty bolts or displace water (WD).
      Trying to use heavier oils like canola is sometimes suggested, but not ideal. That stuff will gum up and make the cutters and spacers all sticky.

    You feed the paper WITH the plastic bag into the shredder?

    • @johnkerwin
      @johnkerwin  6 лет назад +1

      YES. The plastic bag holds the oil and paper so that the paper gets saturated and is not messy to handle. The shredder eats it up without a problem. It gives a nice consistent lube to the shredder blades.

      @bluev3nom 2 года назад +2

      @@johnkerwin I think you misunderstood what they asked you. They are clarifying to use the GLAD Plastic Bag along with the saturated paper into your shredder. DO NOT add the plastic bags people. He was just using the bag for nearby storage for periodic use in accessing oiled paper. Not meant to be fed through with the bag.
      And be careful using this method for shredders that are more home functional/smaller format.
