do you expect a flimsy bamboo wall to hold the weight of more than 10 people? the risk of impaling yourself on some expose piece of bamboo would also be a lot higher than a stone wall
Believe me, skirmishing with archers is the most efficient tactics still as attacker. The time limit kinda balance it right for S2 sieges as defenders have just 60% of the gold that attackers have. Then enemeis can attack from every side and climb up any wall. The tactic was to kill their archers and let the rest being done by elite troops. And they didn't defended their archers well. But when you see good players fight each other you can see the bow spam of any attacker, so yes skirmishing is still important in S2

I once fought three separate armies all by myself with lackluster samurai and high tier musketeers. That game lasted over thirty minutes and I defeated two of the three by holding choke points and firing down onto the enemy as they charged and tried to climb the walls. I was constantly retreating as the enemy neared and neared until all my samurai were defeated and I was forced to establish firing lines near the center fort. I held out for a few volleys as the enemy tried to get through the gates and up the walls, I ended up fighting the enemy 1 to 3 in melee combat and losing, but it was the best battle I've ever had in the Total War series. Shogun 2 definitely had some of the best siege maps of the franchise. It took the enemy three waves just to capture the second layer of the fort, due to the running distance from the first wall to the second they were quite literally running through bullets just to get to the wall where they faced blades and spearmen eagerly awaiting them. It was epic. The only reason I lasted so long is because I kept stacking my melee units on the closest enemy incursion, bottlenecking the units like the 300. I was outnumbered, so when the other units started climbing walls I pulled back my muskets a bit and established firing lines until my melee units were done massacering the enemy. None of my units routed tho, it was a battle to the bitter end. That's what I liked about Shogun, you felt like could actually win against impossible odds by using tactics. It wasn't just about how strong your units were, but rather how skilled the tactician commanding them was.

1. While ladders and siege towers did exist in samurai combat, it would be a hard sell to convince TW players to stop to build them, then push them up to the walls. Due to frequent earthquakes in Japan samurai castles were built with low, sloping walls, hence why most walls (or every wall in Shogun 2 TW) were scalable. The most infamous siege offenses in the Sengoku era actually involved attacking armies building their own walls/enclosures around the outside of the castle walls (normally to cut off and starve out the enemy), then lighting the walls on fire to eventually set everything inside ablaze... or diverting a dam or irrigation canal to flood the interior. Anyhow all forms of sengoku siege combat are very difficult to emulate in a game like TW. 2. Bow warrior monks outrange everything in the game except Bow Heroes. Why exactly idk, sure they trained like crazy but so did bow samurai. Either way they are the bow unit of choice for sieges. 3. Burning your own towers and falling back to the central plaza is standard tactics in Shogun 2 siege. While you don't have to build a noob box on the capture point and could defend the inner walls, either way it's very advantageous for defenders to hold the inner layer where their morale is solid and the general can grant stand and fight bonuses. For those strategies though you have to burn the towers or they will inflict mass casualties. 4. I'm not so sold on the noob box having matchlocks both inside and outside the box firing across at each other. I feel attackers could just stream half dead units between the two groups and make them fire on each other, inflicting mass friendly fire casualties and ruining unit cohesion. 5.
