I love how the counter to this tactic is basically "Try to count to 20"
actually if you see less than 15 units with no forest, yes, ask you question x')
Or just go.. are my flanks secure.
What would be really sneaky is for each attacker to put like 2 units at the back door so that no one army is obviously suspicious. Never having played this game, I have no idea if that is even possible.

Carthage and Rome were allied vs. Pyrrhus... of Epirus. So quite appropriate, in that sense. :)
Yeah one point for you :)
I will make it legal. Wait.. wrong galaxy.

Dude!!! This was a fun battle and a good time!! Totally need to do more battles with you. Thanks for the shout out also!!!

Imagine real battle where thousands of troops fight each other for dear life and than unit of 100 men stands for couple of minutes on one point and they say "Now we captured the entire town". So everybody just stop fighting and defenders admit defeat just because some random point inside the city was captured.
You are seeing this with a bird eye view point. Imagine yourself as one of the defenders. You are fighting enemy at the front while you realized hundred of them enemy coming out from behind. You cant see the whole picture. You may see this as the city has fallen. You are more prone to surrender than fight to death at this point since you cant exactly know the real situation cause you wont have much time to watch the end of the line of flanking enemy to know the exact number.
It is kinda arbitrary..
Literally the movie The Odyssey
@@RG-hx8uc Yeah if you are watching all your friends die and are in the middle of a difficult battle, but then you look behind you and there are hundreds of enemies it would be extremely demoralizing as you would probably think that the enemy really has taken the city somehow without you even knowing it.
Made worse with the generals head on a pike. You would assume it's done and just want to live.
this is the law of probability at it's best : the less likely your opponent is to use this tactic, the less you're likely to prepare a counter to it.
The backdoor tactic isn't used often because it doesn't usually work, but because it's uncommon people don't expect it. As people don't expect it, they don't prepare for it. And thus, as they didn't prepare for it, it worked.
Keep Sauron's Eye fixed upon us. Make him blind to all else that moves.
Exactly what I thought.
If we replace "cheesy" with "dishonorable" every time we lose a battle and try to justify ourselves , i think we would basicaly sound like every general in history who did the same. The French probably thought mud+longbows was cheesy too lol.
Lmao 😂
You lost tho
Every general in history, even modern's, will definitive go for that kind of openings
The strategy is super easily countered with three units basically. Nothing dishonourable about it just using an opening.
@@teddycoala2521 Apollo was clearly exaggerating when calling this ¨cheesy¨
Lol I’ve played this map like a dozen times and I literally had no idea there was a back door.
or more like, there wasn't ;)
Operation Back DoorFRAME
How this map is named
I feel like this was the Greek version of the Allied Invasion of Normandy only set in 200 BC. And instead of Normandy, it’s freakin’ Carthage😂😤
lol that just sad
16:24 "Operation backdoor"
16:28 "Uhm... Maybe that's not a good name"
lmfao 😂😂
Fun battle man! Great cover of this one! Looking forward to seeing the other battles we did!
I imagine like a suspicious influx of Iberian fishermen and artisans coming into Carthage months before the siege and then when the faitfull day comes, they reveal why they all congregated around that little worthless beach area and why they were such poor craftsmen and traders.
It wouldn’t be that much different from a normal day in Carthage, Iberians were all over the place so you wouldn’t need to hide much.
This video actually helped me win. I was playing a 2v2 on this map and one of the opponents was Suebi. I remembered this video but kind of brushed it off but i placed shield bearers (Seleucid) on the road towards that gate. While me and my team are defending the walls, I get a message that my troops are breaking and i look and see the entire Suebi army running to the point.
A favorite thing i do is place my best troops on the point so i manage to quickly put my pikemen into phalanx, my general (Peltast) and another royal peltast into shield wall but they get surrounded and killed but I brought enough time for my team mate and my army to rush back to the point
Did you win?
Cheese tactic: attack an undefended flank.
Right...not exactly cheese
JGFishe ikr tf
broke: hannibal crossing the alps
woke: lusitani using a “cheesy” sneak attack
Fun fact Lusitanians were with Hannibal crossing the alps :D
Apollo:Look at town center
His teammates:Don't tell about that!
Theoden:It's over. What can men do against such reckless hate?
Love all the videos my man good analysis on the different tactics and strategies, keep up the great work.
brings up hud, it's Lusitani, tiny army, giant blob of yellow pips on the other side of carthage.
it's gonna be a good one bois
not my proudest moment
This videos title is: Going through the back without consent
As you said you recommended cheese for the snack, I thought: Wellp, that's my cue!
Rome and Carthage ended their dispute and became allies.
Good thing Rome did not back stab Carthage.
I've never seen so many survivors in a Total War battle. This blows my mind.
"Operation back door...Okay, maybe that's not a good name." 🤣
You had an older video where somebody did this in a smaler paste
That was brilliant and very hard to counter
But when the defenders dont notice a complete army missing than its their own fault and they can really not blame anyone else
"operation backdoor" 😂
I really like your videos Apollo, it's a mix between entertainment and "consulting" :-) it's almost like watching a sport game with an enthusiastic moderator xD #loveit
It honestly looked like you were going to win even without sneaking in the back lol. Nice play
Pixelated: operation backdoor
Me: lame
Pixelated: what do you called it
Me: operation backstabbing
Apollo: “Now I do recommend you get some snacks.”
Me: *Bolts to make popcorn*
3:12 yeah D&D moment appearantly
Great video and fun to watch. Trouble is, I don't agree this is a "cheese" tactic - it was entirely your opponents' fault for leaving that entrance wide open. You snooze, you lose! Well played!
4:03 THEIR IN THE TREES SIR! THEIR IN THE TREES! !!!
Spartans are born of war sins birth but the romans are start at 17 old to be trained to fight
Apollo- "Get some cheese"
Me- *Eating a Cheddar sandwich* "Oh..."
If some one say that tactic is too cheesy. Remember a great man once say.
“That may be so, but it is also irrelevant.”
I used this tactic 5 times on Chartege and always they forget the dor opened
Player: Hey about the ambu-
Apollo: *_okay boomer!_*
Great video as always I really enjoyed this cause I play sparta and Rome and I like this aggressive Sparta play I normally play them on defence after watching this I’m definitely going to start attaching as Sparta
Please never stop doing these videos
That amazing pixalated Apollo keep up the greatvwork! Your vids have gotten me through some rough times! If I ever need a laugh or need to get my mind of of things I can always watch your videos!
Apollo: Joe told me this
Me: Joe MA...
It was cheesy, but the battle overall was awesome! That cav charge into the archer was so flame
On that map there are two choke points near the center flag. Put EVERYTHING facing those choke points, and forget about defending the walls. Preferably with a wall of pikes or shields and archers stacked to hell behind them. You can hold hold off forces 2 to 3 times your size that way.
Most maps are the same-- use the choke points close to the flag and feck the walls.
Lol I haven’t watched this man in like 3 years and all of a sudden he gets recommended on my youtube lol wtf
This is a particularly good battle Apollo. Great vid
15:36 Apollo like "Nope not even trying that one, "romans" is fine"
I can imagine what the enimes where thinking
Great video - I really enjoy these.
Wanted to say at the outset of this post - because I don't want anyone to take this comment wrong - I'm not intending to be critical of anyone here, just saying that I think I may have a different opinion of what constitutes a cheesy strategy and there is nothing wrong with that from either perspective.
Are players not allowed to use their mini-maps during the game? If they can use their mini-maps then I don't understand why the other side never noticed those troops there in there mini-maps? Or do they only show up on the mini-map if your troops have a line of sight on them? I don't think there is anything cheesy about attacking someone's rear at all - particularly given that so many battles get bogged down in engagements at bottlenecks, where both sides can only keep feeding more and more troops into frontal assaults while hoping to overcome the enemy by attrition. If anything "stream sniping" (if that is what it is called - watching someone else's stream to know where they are) would be cheesy - but not sneaking up around an army to avoid costly frontal assaults that really don't gain much ground. I think what happened was more along the lines of one side taking advantage (and not in a negative way) of their opponents' loss of situational awareness. Particularly if its something people don't do a lot on this map - that makes it even smarter to try. I don't think there is any honor in sending troops to die without a hope of achieving much? Pulling off a daring tactic b/c your opponent isn't expecting it is a mark of outside-the-box playing. Additionally, they took a risk by placing most of their army there b/c it did weaken the lines of their side on the main front and so it could have backfired on them, but they managed to pull it off and so I think congrads are in order. Like you said, it won't work every time, and that is why you should always be changing up your tactics and trying to figure out something that your opponent isn't going to be prepared for. Likewise, the ability of a commander to be flexible and respond to changes in the battle or unexpected developments is the mark of an exceptional commander. I think unexpected developments also make battles even more exciting for the onlookers as well b/c of the surprise factor.
These defenders got destroyed ngl amazing battle replay
Given that it's December this is the cheese strategy of the year lol. Good one Apollo!
Making thier way downtown, marching fast, buildings pass as they burn down. Dodedododedo.
Apollo you have shamed the gods, curse you to the underworld. Zeus will seek vengeance upon you.
Apollo- for your snacks get cheese
Me- getting ALL the cheese sat on the couch and munched the whole time
you should share a link to their live feed recording, if they have one that it?. I would enjoy seeing and hearing more so their team being shocked and awed and panicked and frustrated or whatever not seeing this coming. lol you should look into it. love to hear what they have to say on the matter since it was done live. be cool.
When I saw those siege towers I knew this was going to be interesting
I've done it a handful of times it's always really funny. Usually they leave their pikes and gens in the back and I'll kill them and then they will rush their spare units back then I become the defender.
Greeks used cheese with Troy... Apollo and Co. use cheese against Carthage. Well played sir. :)
Great and fantastic battle gg
The guy with the grey flag is mostly at the back in most of the battle though
Dude put real cheese such as the real french cheese. Camanbert, brie, comté, bleu, morbier, ect.
Edit : chedar is not a real fromage
NP _FR just saying it’s cheddar
The only two good things ever to come from france: cheese and baked goods😂
What about swiss mounsiuer
The best cheeses come from italy

Occitania? It’s in France

I just won a battle the other day with this exact tactic XD
This literally gives lord of the rings vibes. The black gate battle. They needed to get sauron to focus his attention on the battle of the gate while they snuck in the back to complete the mission.
My idea of how to beat the romans:
*spartans and Carthage marching to Rome with the other Greek forces*
Hiding units during a siege isn't too clever. But the way you had to hide it from your stream is so cool it's like you actually had spies and you had to keep a strategy top secret like a real general would. Awesome
This is an amazing strategy! Good to see vanguard troops used in such an effective manner!
It's like troops designed for what they can do can't be done
This has got to be my favorite vid, the cheese tactic and the sandwiches at the first couple of minutes is juicy
The name Ivacy VPN always makes me think "Public Relations"
"And for your snacks you might wanna get some cheese, why, well today's tactic in this battle is pretty cheesy." - Cheesy Apollo 2019
Then tomorrow, every body will fight the main battle right there at the back door
oh and the timer counting down is in the lower right side you were looking left in the video great battle anyway!
I found that people wont put too much units to defend the back wall so i just put very strong and diverse units there.
If you're not expecting the unexpected.
Shouldn't the unexpected be expected.
Also this video should also be uploaded to a "off brand" website for that beautiful "back door" action all of us just witnessed.
Pretty cool tactic, reminds me of Troy in some way.
The principles of the game of Go apply in an obvious way here.
let me tell you what pixelated apollo is .He is a guy who doesnt know anything about tactics(his videos about total war are the proof , he is the guy that will send attack cavalry to spear infantry) , and when he discovers something about tactics in total war series he gets fascinating about it , having the idea that no one knows these things and surely believes that if he do video about this, people will get fascinating about it as he does , that's the idea . R.I.P to the time that pixelated apollo gives to make these videos .
The rule that always works in all relationships throughout the ages. In this short video we consider a story that happened in a very interesting time - in times of the Virgin Queen Elizabeth I, whose exceptional reign has been called The Golden Age of England: ruclips.net/video/VgD-o6GMv90/видео.html
It would be interesting to see the replay from the other side. So you can see how the defenders prepare, and exactly when the scheme is revealed.
apollo would be the best history teacher
Genius, ive played this map so much and didnt know
Those 3 squads of Masaesily troops decided to abandon guard duty and go to town for some fun.
"...ready to do a backdoor attack"
Oh I've been more than ready to do those backdoor attacks. 😏
The real strategy/victory was when you hid the beached army during a livestream. Well done!
I liked for that snack joke at the beginning
No matter the strength of the defense it will always crumble because someone left the back door unlocked
Thats crazy well played thats a cheezy smart moved impressive
Well, this would have worked pretty well, but now everyone knows it exists
that was some of the best game play iv ever seen so far keep up the good work
this battle should be called ,,The n00b restistance,,
Speaking of crossbows, it kinda bothers me a bit the Hellenistic factions don't have crossbow units. I mean the Greeks had the Gastraphetes, which basically a handheld crossbow loaded by pressing it down with your stomach, in a way more energy is acquired when loading and more powerful when fired.
Cheesy, maybe, but guarding that open gate means the defender has to divert a lot of troops, too.
Viriathus would be proud of whoever was leading Team Yellow.
Back Door Attack is my favorite adult film
I think you should do Sparta vs. The Athenians but without Athenians is defending this city and Sparta is attacking it
In games that kind of strategy is "cheesy" but in real life it could be considered to be somewhat wise
you should try doing a non replay battle REQUEST if you want but its your choice no pressure from me
Theres a cheese for eveeything, you just gotta take the right one, thats why its hard to choose, but if gouda was in the poll, i would haven taken that instead of parmesan.
