Mizzy Cat This is not true anymore. The US actually has over 40 million bilingual speakers (Spanish/English) now, almost as many as the entire population of Spain.
Yeah but most Europeans only speak their own language plus a nearby language and English, all of which are typically closely related. Europeans are just as ignorant at Chinese as any American
Being Japanese American, I can say that learning to speak Japanese and learning to write in Japanese are two very hard things to do. There’s 3 alphabets and her tattoo was in kanji which comes from the Chinese writing system. Kanji is more difficult to learn than hiragana or katakana. She probably would’ve gotten it right had she used hiragana. Still, she deserves credit for even trying to learn a difficult language. She did a good job speaking it as well.
A lot of them only speak very little of that other language. Sandra Bullock, Viggo Mortensen are fluent, and Colin Firth speaks very good Italian, to my surprise, for an Englishman.
And being able to use ASL signs to copy lyrics in a song is not being able to use ASL since signing word for word isn't ASL. ASL grammar and syntax is completely different than English. At most she was transliterating which means she was using ASL signs in English word order. The hearing cast of A Quiet Place was taught ASL for the movie but aren't considered able to "speak" it.
Well the creator had good intentions and I commend him for that, but he did get the most important thing correct. He had natalie Portman on number 1. She is super uber intellectually talented and humble about it.
It always amazes me how good Sandra Bullocks German really is. She makes almost no mistakes and even speaks with a slight regional accent/dialect. You can hear that she grew up in Bavaria just from those few sentences.
TRC 123 she hasn't lived in Germany for many years and only lived here as a child/pre-teen which usually means that people forget a lot about their first language. So yes it is amazing that she can still speak so fluently and without much of an American accent. She is more surround with English these past few decades and still almost sounds like some random person I could meet in South Germany. Yes her parents are German but how many people have parents that have let's say Spanish as their first language and still can't speak the language?
Die Alte ist wieder da.....Es ist richtig, aber sehst du... English speakers can't get this... I also spoke german in childhood, but now... Language education doesn't really help if people aren't either independently motivated by interest, or driven by profit or necessity. Especially given the state of the American education system, but even if it were less abysmal, it is hopelessly naive to expect that a programme like that could really be effective for the majority of students. It would be far better to focus language education resources on intensive electives for those few students who genuinely want to learn, than to waste them on one-size-fits-all compulsory programmes for the mass of students who couldn't care less and won't retain anything. And in any programme based on student interest, language choices had ought to be varied and interesting, rather than generic and based on mundane factors like immigration patterns; if schools have an opportunity to differentiate themselves from each other according to the languages they offer, all the better for everyone.
WiggaMachiavelli agree with you !! But learning another language shouldn't only be motivated by interest or profit . Because on top of communication another language helps to extend your horizon and brings more knowlegde pertaining to the culture, customs , history of the language of the spoken countries you are learning .

Haha yeah not sure about that anymore, I’ve been there a bunch, speak German and my GF is from there, the dialects are dying out with the elderly, younger people just use/know Hochdeutsch
@@MaestroRigale Since he is basically danish, learning norwegian and swedish is almost like knowing a different dialect of any language. Those languages are very similar.
GirlOn Fire Only half and grew up to a large extent in the US. Most people forget the German language. Sandra Bullock not. Even many Germans living in Germany do not speak perfect German.
Schnecke Unterwegs yeah I get that, but I mean if she speaks german with her mother who's a native speaker then she obviously wouldn't forget the language
GirlOn Fire Exactly!I am French living in the uk and my husband is a Brit and I spoke to my daughter in English and French from birth and now,she is fluent in French with a very faint English accent. She only makes a few mistakes here and there probably just like Sandra Bullock but I don’t speak German so I can’t tell about her.
GirlOn Fire I agree with you that the likelihood of retaining language skills is greater if the language continues to be spoken. However, I know a lot of people, whose language skills, despite the contact and speaking with Native speakers worsened. It depends on the talent or the priority.
That would be cool too,i would also like to see 1st gen. Americans ( children who are the 1st of the family to be born and raised in the USA) who learn the language of their parents native language and also English. I would like to see that, i think it would be really cool!! Qujanaq ( kalaallisut Greenlandic for thank you )

FrauZwoelfe - I’m sorry, buts it’s not really clear what exactly you are “surprised” by. Are you surprised that many Europeans know more than one language, or that these particular celebrities know more than one language? If it’s the later, I’m not sure why you would be surprised that celebrities might want to speak more than one language. And if it’s the former, you certainly should not be surprised. After all, Europe is made up of many small countries crammed together in a space the size of the United States and due to the great rail system (and the European Union) it’s easier to visit neighboring countries than it is for us to visit neighboring states here in the USA. Also, as English has become somewhat of an international language it only makes sense that many people in many countries are going to know English as well as their own native language. By the way, you might want to consider deleting your second comment as it actually makes you look rather uneducated yourself - either that or just an ignorant snob. You may not have meant it that way but that's how it looks nevertheless. And you do realize of course that the video is about celebrities who speak more than one language and is NOT about Americans who speak more than one language.
Joseph Gordon Levitt has a very good grasp of French, and a very good accent, but he is still doing basic grammatical mistakes. It shows he is missing practice. But he is definitely conversational fluent. I am impressed.
I agree -- although he's clearly rusty. he's much better than Bradley Cooper (whom I've seen an entire interview with in French). But Gordon Levitt was aware of one mistake: he corrected himself, changing the "à" to "en" before the country name (unfortunately, though, he said "Belge" instead of "Belgique" -- he probably kicked himself for that mistake afterwards).
That’s amazing. Are you from America by chance? I’m debating on learning a few languages. Spanish seems more logical but I find Myself finding beautiful French words and loving their pronunciations.
@Zara and @Keegan Well, I'm Romanian, but I have lived in Italy and London, that's why I speak Italian and English. As for French I speak it not as fluent as Italian and English, but good enough to make conversations (still studying it on my own). At the moment I'm learning German by myself. I'm using the FSI lessons.

Fútbol entre amigos it’s shocking, since she’s from Colombia 🇨🇴! I figured she would have spoken Colombian 😂😂😂😂Next thing you know, people who are not from England will learn English
Hautney Lam I'm not sure what you mean, anyway I know he doesn't speak Italian cause I am Italian, that's not fluent at all,I'm better at speaking Spanish than him speaking Italian...
same with the german it was very broken and the pronunciation needs alot of work. he said a few sentences a secondary school/highschool kid can do the same
You missed John Malkovitch and Morgan Freeman, who both speak fluent French. Also, there's David Bowie's lovely wife, Iman, who speaks Arabic, English, French, Italian and Somali.
Good for them to try learn another language but if Ariana Grande and Jack Black "speak" said languages then I can say I speak japanese, german, italian, norwegian and other languages I know in a very basic level
sonqualnave She SHOULD speak German well. It's her native tongue. I'm not even sure that English is Mortensen's first language. I suspect that he grew up speaking either Danish or Spanish.
@@Kermit_T_Frog Colin Firth Italian is remarkable too. Very fluent! And Yes Mortensen American and Danish, born in NY from Danish parents. I guess both are natural for him.
OK. I might have to restate that, Mortensen's MOTHER was American. Father was Danish. He lived in Venenzuela for 12 years as a child. Returned to the USA to graduate from high school. Probably, he was exposed to quite a bit of English growing up. That is, unless his mother was a Danish speaker who just happened to have US citizenship.
Janmejay Sinha I'm not sure about Portman. Hebrew is a strange language. It was dead for centuries. I wonder how well developed it is. I've heard her Japanese, and it's rudimentary.
That Spanish interviewer with will smith made me crack up cause she said I’ll try to talk slower for you and she goes right back to talking at the same speed she was before and she is speaking fast for someone who just said they don’t really understand but I understand us Hispanics tend to talk fast 😂 poor will smith
Well, it is kinda understandable since almost all media is dominated by english language. I mean, just try to find one comment in a foreign language in this comment section.
I speak fluent Spanish, French and Italian. Most celebrities sounded really good, Viggo’ s Spanish is perfect, he sounds like a native Argentinian. Impressive! Nacho libre was the worst lol
Actually Sandra Bullock first learned German as her native language and later in her youth she learned Englisch and when time went on her german faded a little bit but is still fluent. So technically English is her foreign language
notice how they all use the English vocalized pause "umm..." mid-interview, instead of a variant more common in the language they're using. This isn't a diss or anything--I do it, too, and my students here find it amusing. At least now I can point out that some of their favorite American (and/or native English-speaking) celebrities do the same in their second language :)
Not Viggo Mortensen, hegoes "esteee.... ee...." which is the typical Spanish way (at least in Argentina), and he extends the "yyyyy...", which means "and".
Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson on Little House on the Prairie)speaks good French and she even presents french speaking shows from time to time, in France and Belgium.
If one of your parents is from the ethnic groups, speaking that language is given. I’m more impressed with people who speaks another language from that an ethnic group that they are not from.
It is far from a given that a child will speak a certain language just because your parents did. Some parents want their children to learn English and fit in better with their English peers. I grew up with two grandparents who spoke no English and a father who learned English during his elementary school years. I don't speak Ukrainian and neither do (did) any of my siblings. My grandfather came from Ireland but I know nothing about the Irish (Gaelic) language.
It actually isn't, in fact. There are a lot of children who have resulted from racial mixing, and even children of immigrants without racial mixing, who do not speak their foreign parents' languages. Sometimes this is a deliberate decision by the parents with a view to encouraging cultural assimilation in to the new host country.
Sadly, an amazingly high percentage of Americans manage to grow up around other languages yet not learn any of them. As a child I internalized the grammar and pronunciation of Polish yet a slew of older relatives inexplicably managed not to, despite having had far more exposure. My ex's brother-in-law and his parents all grew up with Polish speaking (grand)parents and lived in a Polish speaking neighborhood yet they managed to become monolingual English speakers.
@@jonathancooper5104 his dad was a pro player in Italy, in the city of Pistoia near Florence. He lived in Italy for 11 years. There is footage of him calling plays to Sasha Vujacic (who played in Bologna) in Italian and joking around with Pau Gasol.
On David Lee Roth: Being able to sing a song in a foreign language has zero bearing on whether you can actually speak that language. Any professional singer who is worth his money will be able to sing a song in any language.
Totally. I can sing German, Italian, French and Russian. Don't really know those language. I you have a musical ear you are able to repeat any word in any language (well, maybe not that with clicks) and learn to sing a song, not understanding anything.
The language spoken by Jackie Chan is actually Korean and that tv show is also Korean one. Subtitle on the upper left conner of the screen means "experiencing Korean cultures with Jackie Chan". He moved to korea in his early career. Though he didn't spend long time, Jackie learned Korean and was able to speak fluently enough that even Korean police who caught Jackie couldn't even believe him explaining that he's not Korean but from Hong Kong in korean.
For those watching, I will be making a part 2 to this video! should be up on this channel in the next few days. 15 More Celebrities Who Can Speak A Foreign Language. Thanks for the recent viewership and support!
Puerto Rican people do speak moderately fast but a trained Journalist working on a televised show interviewing a Celebrity would not have spoken that way . She was being deliberate ..
Maria Celeste speaks fast...that is normal for her and most Puerto Ricans. She is fluent in English too. I don't see anything wrong with the interview....she asked Will if he needed for her to speak slow, to let her know.... so nothing rude about the interview. Keep it moving. Will is learning Spanish and he does really good.
I am American. We are barely offered language in school and most of us forget it. So 3 years ago, at 34 years old, i decided to learn Spanish. Then i learned some French, Portuguese, and a lot of Norwegian. I believe America (The USA) should be pushing more for language learning because it has done wonders for my cultural understanding

In America, speaking a second language is a shocking talent. Here in Europe, it’s a regular school lesson.

I agree with you that the likelihood of retaining language skills is greater if the language continues to be spoken. However, I know a lot of people, whose language skills, despite the contact and speaking with Native speakers worsened. It depends on the talent or the priority.

Darrell Jebb - Really? Awesome!
I am surprised! It ist quite normal for most Europeans talking 2 or 3 Languages.
Actually it is also normal in africa and asia

S. Calabrese french has the most difficult grammar in the world. Even french people have some difficulty with it
Aurélie Fourcade 5 years of French in school and I am still quite bad at it
I agree -- although he's clearly rusty. he's much better than Bradley Cooper (whom I've seen an entire interview with in French). But Gordon Levitt was aware of one mistake: he corrected himself, changing the "à" to "en" before the country name (unfortunately, though, he said "Belge" instead of "Belgique" -- he probably kicked himself for that mistake afterwards).
@Adelaide McMillan Cooper did a recent interview again all in french. He's fluent.
C'est vrai, Jodie Foster parle parfaitement le français avec juste, parfois, un très léger accent .
Colin Firth's Italian is excellent. Bravo, Colin :)

He was married to an Italian woman and lived in Italy - still keeps a house there, I think.

You would be impressed with me since I am fluent in Spanish and Russian and nope no Spaniards or Russians in my family.
You should add Kobe Bryant, he speaks italian because he grow up in Italia

Puerto Rican people do speak moderately fast but a trained Journalist working on a televised show interviewing a Celebrity would not have spoken that way . She was being deliberate ..
That's because will is a moron
