  • Welcome to my final devlog for my roguelike game! As a solo game developer, I am excited to announce that I will be releasing my game to the world.       I'm really excited too. The total work hours put in to this game aren't actually a lot, but I've been working on it in my spare time for 7 months now. That's a substantial chunk of my life. 😅

    Congratulations on releasing your game! I really feel you with these HUD design problems, I'm living them too right now. 😅 You managed it brilliantly!
    That's funny I just watched this GDC talk 2 days ago for my own game. ☺
    Here are some of my notes about this talk if it can be useful:
    Share good gifs
    - Can you present your core gameplay loop in a GIF?
    - Can you show the killer app of your game in a GIF?
    - Can you teach someone to play you game in a GIF?
    - Can I "get" you game in a single GIF?
    Keep nurturing your games
    - Content updates from you
    - Content updates from your community
    - Community scene / competition
    -Community engagement
    - Port the game to other platform
    - a player on steam is an ad for its steam friends
    Friction kill, gives your game a home.
    Give player the option to play your game without a big commitment of stress of challenge. It should be relaxing and kinda easy but still relevant (daily quest for example). Game like stardew valley, animal crossing or minecraft are already "home" games.

      Ir's going to be a lot different, so I'm a little worried people won't find it as interesting. But it means a lot to me, so I'm going to try anyway.
      If people don't like it, I'll try to wrap up development quickly, or I'll drag it out and add more features and polish if they do like it. 🤔

      I think it really helped this time to start from a "finished" game. So I felt like I could stop at any point and still have a complete game. Trying to make something huge, and not having an end in sight is when I typically give up on projects. 😅

    I got a glitch where the table grew after I killed all the enemies. Idk what it is but it screwed up my run lol. Great job, im so proud of you!

      That bug was caught in playtesting and I honestly thought I'd fixed it.
      If the game is paused during a specific frame of the table or box shaking it'll grow until the pause ends. Hopefully it doesn't ruin too many runs. 😬

    I played a little, neat, sadly i'am at work and can't play that much LOL, very polished product, i hope my project get at that stage too... for now i felt something wrong, i see what you did about bee attacks and though well, that could be used for me as well... i'am doing a bird attack and not know exactly how to do it, in my mind, i though about make a colider in the bird itself and move it together, modifying animation... i guess will be close to your bee move, but invisible triangle... that is the charm, the triangle will fit perfectly on my idea, thanks!!!

    Very big congratulations on releasing your game. There is a lot to like there, plays well, has progression, and I think the graphics look good. I also don't think it was "too easy" or "too hard" and I think given the scope of the game you did a great job of balancing. Only played a couple of runs and look forward to going back and maybe trying some of the other characters. The one thing I thought was jarring which I didn't get from the devlog's is room generation/progression. Leaving a room, killing the enemies, and then going "back" through the door I came I expected to see an empty room. Or even just enemies respawn or something. But it is a new generation of a room same as if you walked through a new door. I got in the habit of going back of forth through the same door and still seemed to "progress" to the boss all the same. I realize that generating a "map" would change things more and probably is not worth it, but I also felt like seeing a boss door might be cool or help. One instance I had was I took a hit and was down a little health, then walked through a door and it was the boss. Had I known the situation and been able to go to an unused room to get some health I might have felt more in control. Even if it was just linear like Hades I think the feeling would be closer to video game progression, where currently once you beat a room my impression is "pick any door, they all function the same to generate a new room". Still, thank you so much for making this game and sharing the experience.

      The "shifting" dungeon concept was originally to avoid having to generate proper levels, because back then I had no idea how to do it. I know how to now, but it kind of grew on me and built the game around the idea.
      What I wanted to do, but it got cut before of time, was add random special doors. So it would still be randomized, but you could find special doors that would take you to more challenging rooms or that had some special theme or bonus in it. At least then you'd have some agency when picking a door to go through. 🤔
      Maybe if the game does well, I'll go back and add that mechanic to the game.(along with a other things people have suggested)

    Love this so much! Little thing for future games tho, the bright red exclamations ,to me at least, look like something that you shouldn't be touching, kind of like something that maybe is coming soon, so i think maybe a arrow pointing on either side or just a less aggressive color would work better as to not feel so dangerous. Other than that tho, Love IT! Im so proud of you!!

    Hello! I'm playing the game and I changed the music when choosing a perk. For some reason, the music is being played twice with some delay. Just letting you know!

      That got reported a few times during the playtesting phase, but I couldn't recreate it on my own computer... I'll add that to the new to-do list. 🤔

      @@HelperWesley It happened on the first run and stopped when returning to the lobby. I changed it again and the bug did not occur. It was almost like another instance of the music being created on top of the current one because when changing the music again, I could hear two different songs at the same time.
      Don't know if that extra information helps.
      Anyway, congrats on the game! It's pretty fun and addictive.

    Hey Wesley, first of all congratulations on publishing your game. I played for about 2 hours, had some fun with it. I really like the enemies design and the overall look of the game. If you ever read this, i'll leave some feedback based of adjustments:
    Adjustments:
    - There's a brief delay between the entrance of the room and the moment you can shoot, it feels too long after some runs. If you change this delay some miliseconds or even a second faster, the game definetly will look more fluid.
    -Bosses should drop more HP, it feels really unfair losing 7 health to a single hit and only gaining 1 back.
    -The guns need labels! If the name of the gun appears up when you get close, you could see what u're getting better, other than look at tiny differences.
    -Speaking of guns, you could change the colors of the round to make them more unique visualy. Life green, blue and red.
    -Some enemies spawn too close of the entrance, making the red ones spawning walls really a pain.
    - Speaking of this enemy, you should consider the player being able to dodge to the other side of the wall. It can really kill a run if you get bad luck to be trapped at the entrance.
    - The multiplier factor of damage/movement numbers are really confusing. You should consider making them add as flat, like defense.
    - The same as labeling the weapons goes to characters when you already purchased them.
    - Speaking of characters, it feels really weird teleporting to a spike with the engineer, if i even click a pixel into them. It makes it really unfair since you're moving your mouse fast in this bullet hell, there should be a marge when you click in the border of the spike you get teleported safely to it's side.
    - Speaking of spikes, recoiling into them is really boring too.

      -I've got the firerate timer issue when you go through doors written down already, I didn't catch that one in playtesting, just after release.
      -The boss dropping more hp is a good idea. I've noted that. 👍
      -The colors of bullets were chosen to help the players make better snap decisions. Red things bad, blue things good. I was thinking of changing the bullet size to make the gun bullets more varied. 🤔
      -I've never personally been trapped behind the red wall before, the animation that plays before the wall goes up is longer than the dash by a little bit.
      Thanks for giving the game a play through, and for the feedback. I'm writing it all down in to a brand new to-do list and we'll see what I can get to when/if I come back to this game. 👍

    Alright. I gave it like 10 runs (some being hilariously short). It's pretty fun, and I think I found only 1 bug? If you shoot into a room you're going into, the bullets stick around. This could be intentional, because it does make sense if you think about it, but I don't know for certain.
    I managed to get #5 leaderboard at the time of writing this, so here's some thoughts on 'The Meta.' Sniper gun + Brute Swing + Extra Bullet is very strong. It doesn't actually suffer an accuracy loss, in fact, it seems to make the second bullet stack on top of the first, meaning easy double damage! Defense and HP is good early on, but enemy damage easily outscales it, and then you miss out on DPS potential which seems much better. If you want to be tanky, the Robot guy is the better option (I think).
    Bosses, I feel the spider poses a way bigger threat than the other two. The giant Imp is dangerous, but rather simple if you can burst him down. The Ghost is pretty fair and cool. The Spider though, feels way tankier and summons tiny spiders, which I'm assuming have the same damage scaling as the rest of the enemies.
    Overall, it was fun, and I had a good time. Congratulations on finishing a relatively large scale project!

      I'm really glad you liked it!
      I'm interested to see what "meta" strategies come out of the game. I know I intentionally put 1 powerful combo in that I haven't seen anyone mention yet, but maybe it's draw backs actually make it less optimal than something tankier, like the robot.
      Glad to hear the break down of the bosses. And it's interesting you found the spider the hardest, a lot of people find that one to be the hardest, but I honestly found the giant imp to be the hardest. I can never beat that boss without getting hit at least once. 😅

      Also on the side note, are you planning on developing the game further? I have quite a lot of thoughts about the current state of the game, especially the balance system, so I would really like to see them addressed since I like the core gameplay a lot.
      And the last thing, you might want to consider changing the name of the game a little, it appears some company has the exact same name and it's extremely difficult to search anything about your game. I can't even tell whether there isn't really any content about your game on RUclips, or I just can't find it.

      But first I want to work on a quick mobile game I've been meaning to make.
      And yeah, the name is a little generic. A lot of people/companies have the name on the internet. I should probably change it to something more searchable. 🤔

      A little, but I think they're really important. No game is ever "finished", there's always more to add or tweak.
      So a deadline forces you to finish up and ship it, rather than infinitely tinkering with the game.(At least for me.😅)

    There was a bug I discovered in this, if you click the music button too fast lots of music gets mixed up (on browser)

      A few different people have brought that one up to me, but I couldn't replicate it on my own computer. 🤔
      I tried putting in a fix, but still that bug keeps showing up some times. 🤔

    Can I ask you why you released you your game on Newgrounds and not on itch? Just curious because I thought the community on itch is bigger than newgrounds. :o

      Itch is terrible for discoverability, your game quickly gets drowned by all of the jam games being released.
      I did release on itch later though.

      There s a version on poki that can be played on mobile devices.
      But ultimately it'll come down to whether I can get this version of the finished game to run properly on mobile. It's going to be substantially bigger. 😅

      It's really hard to balance for different skill levels. 😅
      I might add different game modes or unlockable of some kind that'll ramp up the difficulty. But I'm not sure just yet how I'd tie that in to the leaderboard. 🤔
      But that all depends on how the game does. If it does really well, then I'll be able to justify coming back and working on it.
