- Adding bosses to the roguelike video game that I'm developing. In this devlog I show how I come up with the design of bosses. And how I create the pixel art sprites with Kenney's creature mixer, and tweak them in Aseprite. I create the different variety of bosses I think best fit the game, before moving on to other topics for the next devlog.

Be sure to leave a comment and tell me what your favorite video game NPC is, and why. 🤔
Zote From Hollow Knight because he is Invincible, Fearless, Sensual, Mysterious, Enchanting, Vigorous, Diligent, Overwhelming, Gorgeous, Passionate, Terrifying, Beutiful, Powerful
plant boy from cuphead, because Y E S.
Make boss variety like the enemies
I'd love to see a gunsmith npc who has your weapon choices and talks about making them/what they do
My favourite npc is zote the mighty from hollow knight as he is so strong and brave and inspires young adventurers
Until you find out he is weak
@@gersongjr this was satire
His precepts helped me to resist the infection, specifically precept 56, “Do not dream.” I also once almost drowned in the British Channel, but I remembered precept 44, “You cannot breathe water” and I was okay. I am, however, ashamed to say I once forgot precept 36, “Eggshells are brittle,” and accidentally broke a nosk egg. In repentance for this, I recited the 57 precepts 57 times in the name of the Invincible, Fearless, Sensual, Mysterious, Enchanting, Vigorous, Diligent, Overwhelming, Gorgeous, Passionate, Terrifying, Beautiful, Powerful, Grey Prince Zote.
Zote, a knight of great renown?
Great idea to start from existing NPCs. I sometimes think it's quite nice to have bigger NPCs as bosses in the early game but then later have them appear as normal enemies to show the player how far they're progressed.
My favourite NPC has got to be cornifer the map maker from hollow knight. I like him because of his design, personality, and unique humming.
Claptrap is clearly superior just with his downfalls being a big part of his dialogue directly mentioning his appearance in game on numerous occasions.
I am a sucker for Zote the Mighty from Hollow Knight, just inept, elderly and irritating. I must relate to him a bit. Great vid as always, super excited to see how the overworld progresses.
It's not just you, a lot of people loved Zote the Might, and commented about them here. 👀
No I HATE him he is so obnoxious in his boss form but that’s more of a personal grudge I guess
Forgot his name, but the old rancher that recorded his voice in Slime Rancher. I like the fact that he's a guide despite the fact that he helps and gives you tips on how to play.
I quite like the map guy from Hollow Knight because he's just minding his own business oblivious to the world around him and he's just a chill guy.
Favourite NPC is Quirrel from HK. Just a guy thata appears seemingly randomly and gives you knowledge and advice, on top of being someone who is just exploring (Like you are most of the game), has his own goal independant of yours, but helps you when your goals unite.
My favorite (amd least favorite at the same time) npc is probably the Dryad from Terraria. The lore idea of this nature spirit trying to purify all the corruption from the world is cool (until you're stuck with 1% corruption)
1% corruption. Yeah. 😅
My favorite npc is E. Gadd from Luigis s mansion. Even tough, he does nt have too much personality, he s helping you when you’re stuck and gives you messages from time to time, making you feel that you re not alone.
My favorite NPC is probably the ones from UNDERTALE. They really feel like they are there for you and all of them have different personalitys. They really bring the Game alive
My favorite NPC is the Guide from Terraria. They are a massive help without forcing you to look at the wiki every two seconds. Plus, he's just a chill guy, trying to help you on your journey to kill several gods.
love how the game is turning out👍, my favorite NPC in a video is spamton from deltrune: a character that first challenge you to a battle but later becomes a shop owner, except that he is funny the because of his nonsense and even has a sad origin story
Oooh, that defeinitely sounds like a well fleshed out character. 🤔
And keeping them around as a shop character means they'll always be a part of the players game.
"The spider is lighter than the ghost" made me laugh. Thanks for the great video!
My favourite NPC would probably either be Zote the Mighty from Hollow Knight or the Resourceful Rat from Gungeon.
I really enjoy the aspect of an annoying, sometimes even comedic character who you get to later take out your frustration on in a boss fight. Coincidentally, the Rat fight is also one of my favourite boss fights due to how personal it feels, because he’s just so annoying and you really want to kick his teeth in.
My favorite video game npc is Wheatley from portal 2. He's funny and has a great story arch.
yeah I love this game, thx for making this videos❤
fav npc is easily mari from omori, always offering respite and a full heal wherever she is along with having a relaxing theme, her presence is a blessing even in the worst areas
my favourite NPCs are from games like Bugsnax, where the characters could be completely ignored, but giving them attention reveals deeper darker stories.
Bugsnax is such a strange game. In a good and interesting way. 🤔
My favorite NPC is probably the painter from a short hike because I was always excited to see them whenever I randomly came across them.
Seems a lot of people have mentioned that, enjoying characters that would randomly show up during their travels. 🤔
My favourite NPC is the hunters in enter the gungeon, creating miniquests for the player and giving unlocks and variety to runs
My favorite npc is theo from celeste. His personality and dialogue is rly interesting to me he feels like a real person
My favourite npc has to be Leshy from Inscryption. However, since Leshy roleplays every single npc you meet in-game, my favourite "sub npc" is the Trapper. The Trapper is very handy, because he will give you pelts, in exchange for teeth. These pelts can be exchanged, at the Trader, for cards. The reason I love the Trapper is because in the the third level, he turns on you and tries to kill you, which I didn't expect on my first playthrough. Also, he has one of the best boss themes in the game.
Oooh Leshy is a good pick, they very hard carry inscription most of the game.
And they're kind of the good guy in a weird way. 😅
my favourite npc is patches from the souls games, just meeting him is quite the experience, and in almost all souls games it goes like meet friendly npc ->promise reward for menial task ->kick you down into a very dangerous/entire new area ->survives and meet him again -> accept his apology -> meet him again ->he's a shopkeeper now->meet him again in a random ass place -> trick again (more likely you're just curious and knowing full well its a trick)->survive and meet him again for him to be a permanent shopkeeper. This dialogue of his imo is i think a good representation of his character "every age it seems is tainted by the greed of men.rubbish to one such as ,i devoid of all worldly wants"
My favorite npc has to be Frog from Everhood. He is such an interesting, fleshed out character with a great story and even a secret boss.
My favorite NPC is the shopkeeper from links awakening because he is full of mysteries and breaks the player expectations when they try to steal by killing them in a powerfull way
Groose (Skyward Sword) is my favorite NPC because he felt like an actual character with world permenance who made progress, epic mechanical use, had flaws, and a character arc.
A good second is Arcterus Mengsk from StarCraft 1. Solid character who drives the plot and does stuff even when the player isn't around. He's clever, keniving, and manipulative. You're always on your toes when he's nearby.
I really like the space core at the end of portal 2 lmao. It's one of those little things you just can't ever forget.
i really like the shopkeepper from spelunky 1 and 2 it adds so much depth that you can steal the shop or just buy the over priced stuff.
Bit late with this one but.. Nico from Legend of Mana. He's woefully out of touch with everyone's feelings but good-natured which leads to some hilarious exchanges where he screws people out of money but thinks they should be happy with the exchange. In the game's combat when you recruit him as an NPC fighter he also has an attack called "a gift for you" which is a present-shaped bomb.
An NPC that gives a cool quest and rewards you with a power/ability
Looks awesome. Good luck!
I like the hornet, because they are very majestic and can also be a boss. And when you first see them it usually makes the player think of following them
Great Devlog Helper Wesley, this is my first time seeing your channel-really enjoyed it! Keep it up with your game 👏
Favorite npc: Marnie from Stardew Valley. She’s a down to earth farmer lady just looking for love.
I love sly from hollow knight. He was first just an old and tiny shopkeeper. Until you progress through the game, you would never know he was one of the best nailmasters. And you get to fight him as well. I’d really like to see something like an elder that just likes giving you advice but will put you to the test as a difficult boss.
Ah. And elder. The first time it said box, and I thought you were making a comment on how boxy the character is. 😅
@@HelperWesley yeah I realized that. I was too busy typing and I guess I messed up. I mean a wise box-like character could be cool too. I’ve always liked a yoda-like character who shows their true strength when necessary.
Cornifer from hollow knight, he is the map npc that sells maps from the place that you're at.
My favorite npc is Toriel becuase even though she is literally a tutorial the game doesnt treat her like that, proof of this is even shpwn when people dont even think of her like an npc either becuase it shows her emotions and conflict of letting you go out into the real world to die like the others.. she even asks you to never come back because how she hurt you and how you hurt her....
Theo from Celeste, he has a clear personality and matches the story and intent of the game. He has an area of expertise that can help out. This style of character would work more for a companion or story character
This is awesome. My favorite NPC… probably… idk. But I recommend a character who can sell you 1 upgrade before a run, but only has a 50% chance of spawning
Huh. That's interesting. 🤔
Would people maybe then intentionally die to restart and get the shop that next time?
Maybe an NPC that can sell you 1 upgrade, but only spawns after you lose a round where you beat the first boss. So you can't just restart to get the item, and you'll be encouraged to "at least" make it to the first boss each run. 🤔
It’s not every other run, it’s a 50% random chance
Finally a topic i am having a big interests in
Npc in borderlands that wants you to shoot him in the face.
If you add it make it drop a funny upgrade.
Like shooting glowing skulls.
But make it super rare.
Ik I'm pretty late, but Zacharie from OFF. Coolest shopkeeper of all time
Bro your videos are so awesome and educational
Probably my favorite npc is the woman from the firewatch because of the dialogs and how alive she is.
Oooh yeah. She was a very well realized character. 👀
I love the Mantis Lords from Hollow Knight, because when you figure it out you feel so awesome
Man I would love to try and make a rougelike now, but school is pretty funny and takes all my time. Seeing how far this game has come is really cool
School. 😩
I really enjoyed university, because everyone felt like they had a sense of "purpose", but I definitely don't want to go back to the time when every minute of my day was dominated by it. 😅
For the NPCs I think it is very important to have soma crazy, but funny NPCs that are all in their own ways interesting. Like a living humanoid fish guy or one enemy likely charakter NPC that is a good version of the Enemy that can speak to you.
Ooooh. The "loot drop" enemy type would be a really good merchant npc character. That would totally make sense within the world of the game. 👀
Personally I find Hat Mouse from Stardew Valley cute and fun, as they’re kind of out of the way and some players may never even go find them. But if you do, you can purchase a variety of hats and such for completing specific achievements. Also, the Mission Control character in Deep Rock Galactic adds tons of charm to the game, even if he’s just a disembodied voice that chimes in occasionally with information or comedic comments
I love the Mom from the game "Chicory: a colorful tale". She is just that comforting, helpful mom that feels relatable.
Wow, that game looks great. I just had to look it up. 👍
Favorite npc is zote the mighty from hollow knight. He's not very technically applicable but you could do something really fun with having to save a character in a random room and then have that character be a jerk about it. An idea I had for an NPC in one of my games was a large serpent or spider female character in a really creepy den or nest or something. This character would pose a bit of an alluring threat like a crazy ex girlfriend but it comes with some possible benefits... Like a crazy ex girlfriend. Bonus points if you make it an attractive creepy character.
My favourite NPC is from Hollow Knight (my favourite game and as i see, from many others here) i love quirrel, a nice adventurer doing his own thing. You sometimes cross paths. He also helps you defeat a boss.
A lot of people mentioning Hollow Knight NPCs.
I really need to pick up that game and play through it, I have only seen videos on it. 🤔
Definitely Quirrel from Hollow knight. I love his story, and the little details he provides. He reallly fleshes out the world imo. He's also apart of a very fun boss fight.
I can't choose between them since their basically the same so the Undertale Shopkeepers are pretty good imo. Unlike in other games like Pokemon or something they aren't soulless and you can tell that they have personality as if they live their own life so you can get attached to a minor character and actual have a favorite character.
Favorite NPC? It’d have to be either one the Toad Brigade from the Super Mario Galaxy series (who help out vaguely in some levels, but mostly stand out as colorful individuals that you’re just glad to see in the often-lonely galaxies) and Cloth from Hollow Knight (who, again, starts as a friendly face to contrast the bleaker world of Hallownest, but who’s also nuanced enough that you can find investment in them, something that comes back later in the game…).
A friendly face to see during an otherwise dark or lonely trip. 🤔
I could definitely see the appeal in that. 👍
Cloth is easily my second favorite npc in the games i play, and hollowknight is one of the 3 games i play that have multiple npc’s in them, i just really like the merm king.
goblin tinkerer from terraria is my favorite npc cause it lets you throw away all your spare money you have no idea what to do with to possibly upgrade (or, if you're unlucky, downgrade) your weapon with a modifier
yeeeeee you're gonna add something to spend all my money on
awesome!
My favorite npc has to be papyrus from Undertale he's one of the goofy npc's I have ever seen with so much personality and charm and he's self aware most of the time he's also very sweet
My favorite npc is the old lady from celeste, because she jokes with your face lol
I personally am torn between that one tutorial guy from enter the gungeon, because he is pretty chill and actually affects the later game, or cap'n cuttlefish from splatoon, an NPC that went through a big enough character arc to be noticeable, but not enough to croud the game to the point of being the new main character
The Pig King and or Merm King from Don’t Starve Together, i love their dumb but wise (in a way) nature, that try their best to help their community, simple, but you can tell they know a little more than you do about whats going on, giving them this simple yet really interesting feel to them.
My favorite is probably Dr light from mega man. He helps megaman from the sideline with his inventions. I think scientist characters are cool and honestly just love the mega man games.
Mega man is definitely a classic for a reason. 😎
It's that time again, new helper Weasley devlog! :D
Update: just finished watching, the bosses are really cool! If I had to be nitpicky, I would say the red overlay on the second stage bosses doesn't look quite right imo... Other than that, great devlog!
Yeah, someone commented on that on twitter. 🤔
Adding red to an already red sprite just make it muddy.... Right now I'm just going to move on, but after I get all of the core mechanics finished in the game I'll go back through and fix up issues like this one. 👍
Great stuff as always Wes! I'd love to see a weird Majora's mask type NPC 😃
My favorite NPC at least from a comedic stand point has got to be Tingle from Zelda games.
Oh Tingle. 😅
Lady Luck from Dicey Dungeon!
Also! For the Imp King adding a simple deep walk sound or some slight screen shake can convey the weightness of it. Also I feel that adding something extra when you do the dash, but that’s just me
I was recently looking in to Dicey Dungeon for our GMTK jam game. 👀
And yeah, I'll definitely be doing a "final pass" or two.(Or 3) Where I add all of the juice and fix up animations, sounds, and things like that. 🤔
The spider god's fireballs making the room shake, but none of the other bosses doing the same feels a little out of place. 😅
boss fights awesome.i like castlevania, legend of zelda, megaman, contra, metroid boss fights
Amazing Video Keep Them Uo. I do feel like the game will be 10x better when there are death particles
Yeah, that is something the enemies are definitely lacking right now. 😅
Maybe slightly shake the screen when the red thing walks? Also the spider enemy should shoot a web ball or something, not a fireball, it would make more sense and gives reason for a spider to spawn
quirrel is such a good npc because of ow he is introduced and because he is easy to relate to
Which game are they from?
@@HelperWesley they’re from hollow knight
I know this is a hit early to say this since it's more of a polish thing, but I really think the enemies need some sort of dying effect or animation other than just disappearing.
And for the NPC question, most NPCs from undertale are great, they have a lot of humor and also give bits and pieces of other story-related stuff sometimes
Spelunky 2 shop keepers. You can either buy from them or steal but they’ll try to kill you if you steal so be carful.
I feel like you should make the boss rooms fit the theme if the boss
Like a spiders nest for the spiders with little spiders in the background that dont do antything
The witch in skul the hero slayer, because I like permanent upgrades in toguelikes
I've been waiting for this video hahaha
I couldn't turn down the GMTK jam, but I'm really happy to get back to this game! 👍
I think my favourite NPC is Charon from supergiant's Hades. He's a shop owner, but sometimes a bag of money spawns next to him and if player grabs it, Charon gets pissed of and challanges the player to battle
Oooh, that'd be an interesting secret for the player to discover. 👀
@@HelperWesley I'm not sure if you have time for such a secrets in this game tho
@@asadokimas981 Oh I definitely wouldn't add them right now. But maybe at the end. 🤔
@@HelperWesley amazing!
One of my favorites is sans form undertale, because you know sans
Because Sans. 👍
I have a few favourite NPC Solaris from the soul games Markus from borderlands 2 and (however you spell it) the liar from the elder Scrolls
I like that helmet lizard chap in enter the gungeon who’s helmet you would kick off into the pit
My favorite npcs are Zote and Quirrel from Hollow Knight. I really love the kind of npc that you can just run into anywhere, and feels like they got their own things going on. (Quirrel is more of a real traveler like that, but Zote just has such an amazingly ridiculous personality I love him too)
Ooooh. I do remember hearing about that in Hollow Knight. 🤔
It might be complicated, but I could make a "respite" room that spawns from time to time, that'll have npcs or lore in them. 🤔
@@HelperWesley Or maybe you could take inspiration from skul the hero slayer, where you have nps that are stuck in cages in some levels. In that game they don't usually have much to say, but it's another way to implement npcs in a maybe more organic way?
My favorite npc? Hmmmmm... probably smiley from riddle school, there nice and all fun! That's why
Riddle school, I hadn't heard anything about that game in a long time.
The characters were definitely memorable, but I'm really surprised to see any of them mentioned, just because of how long ago that was game was released. 🤔
Favorite npc guide from terraria
Yes another update to this game :) I want to make a game like this but idk how to use the dungeon extension 😅 Edit: just finished the video and I've played the binding of Isaac the shop npc would be cool having 2 items on display like a powerup or maybe a gun
Awesome progress!
The base version of this game is in the engine as a template game if you want to build off of it to make your own game! 👍
But it doesn't remember the dungeon, so if you want to have real dungeons that you can revisit and explore, then you'd definitely need to use the dungeon extension. Or come up with something else. 🤔
@@HelperWesley I have a random number generator that if = 1 then it sets the players position to the level but if I add enemies and you get on a different level the enemy will just follow you so I did the rectangle movement but it kind of sucks because all the enemies will move the same
I remember fighting this boss once with lots of phases, took me hours. Then when I got to the final phase, my PC shut down. Same thing happened in a different game some months later. except it was a pvp match and I was on the last round.
My favorite NPC is Ghost from Call of Duty MW3 just because his mask is cool :)
ps: I spent too much time of my live playing minecraft, so i don't have many references of NPC's hahaha
Communicate better that the crystals give the boss his ability by having small nonthreatening energy particles fly from the crystals towards the boss and blink the boss corporal for every hit on a crystal and maybe also change the colors of all particles forming the energy stream of that crystal for a moment
Yeah. It definitely needs something more. 🤔
Hey Wesley, you have guided me with my complete journey with GDevelop, and it will soon reach an end... As I am moving to construct and later Godot, so thank you.
Good luck with your future games. 👍
Also, for replayability, you should be able to unlock new upgrades that can be obtained after beating the final boss
I do have a meta progression system in mind, but mostly cosmetic. I want the game to have a leaderboard focus, so I don't want to give the player anything that would tilt the balance.
But maybe some unique skin, or npcs, or something after you get a certain distance in to the game. 🤔
Favourite NPC? Hmmm... Oh! My favourite NPC is Spamton G. Spamton from Deltarune, when he is in his shop! He is my favourite because of his [vocabulary] and he's glitchy. Who don't like glitchy characters nowadays?
It's definitely becoming a trend these days. 🤔
Nice choice using familiar enemies as the first few bosses, digging the look of the assets too 👌
I do think for the first boss however, the delay window between those two fire balls is too small. I can see a player easily being overwhelmed from dodging the first few balls and then needing to immediately dodge the second wave; and then there's an additional phase when he shoots out 3? Could be that you're used to playing the game while developing it, that the mechanic seems easy to predict and avoid (because you know it's coming lol). But I'd imagine you'd do a lot of balancing before putting out a demo!
Oh most definitely, I can fix that issue with a tweak in the animation speed or by adding a few more frames to help telegraph the attack.
That'll hopefully all come out in the wash when I host a private beta and people start giving me some harsh feedback after playing it. 👍
My favourite non player character is the old man from the original zelda. Take the sword its too dangerous to go alone.
For the final release, all enemies should have way more health to make the game much harder. I feel like most games releasing lately have been not so challenging so hopefully this game will be a bit harder than the standart
I think I had "god mode" on while recording this video, each enemy takes 3-4 hits hits to kill with default stats and get exponentially tougher as you play. 👍
@@HelperWesley 👍 sounds good so I’ll take it. The game looks very good btw
nice
My Favourite NPC Is The Sans From Undertale
i don't know if this counts as an npc but my favorite one is the narriator from there is no game
Totally counts. I love the narrator from that game too! 👍
My favorite npc may just be the shop guy from voidigo.
Had to look it up, and wow I love the way that game looks. 👀
I forget the name of the game and character. But I remember this merchant NPC who absolutely despises you and would constantly make remarks about it. As the game progressed he would get bet gear in his shop because, “the faster you succeed the faster I can stop interacting with you.”
Honesty it was pretty fun and different but I don’t know if it fits in your game.
That definitely sounds like something unique. 👍
my favourite npc is Ryder from GTA San Andreas because Ninja Style.
fav npc...? idk probably from hallow night.
Maybe Boss #2 should add camera shake on impact to feel the weight?
Yeah. 🤔
The Spider God attacks have a lot more weight than the other two. That'll be something I'll have to come back and tweak in the future. Make them both a little more "juicy".
