Rant and rant about zone focusing… But come on, it's a 25mm lens on a half frame. If you can't hit focus with that, you aren't trying.

this camera is for people looking for a step-p from disposable film cameras. something that is well made but still offers film and has guarantee. a lot of people get into film photography cause they wanna take their time. they don't care wether or not it has autofocus or not.

I have one question: if Canon came out with a brand new AE1 build to the quality of the old camera and maybe given a new metering system, How much do you think they would charge? I think Pentax 17 is fairly priced, now when I say that, people will always think things are over priced. I don't want to spend more money than I have to, but these are tools. We have to remember that back in the day of film cameras, they were not cheap either. Growing up in 70-80-90s Film was all we had. We had no choices. You wanted a good camera, you paid for it. Do they make cameras better now then they did 20-50 years ago, I would say yes or maybe. But when the price of a roll of film was maybe $4 to $6. and we had 8-12 film companies competing for consumers... and development was available everywhere. Prices for development was cheap too, some places would give you a free roll when you dropped off your film for development. We don't have that infrastructure anymore. Thing cost more. I want to see if Pentax releases the next 2 film cameras. I like the Pentax 17 for what it does. I have a shelf of vintage cameras, some very high quality ones, but shutters have locked..etc. Not everything vintage last forever either. Be smart with your money. Don't buy just because it is the newest thing. Invest wisely! the danger is when we look at what others may want to spend on a camera and when it does not line up to what we think we would do. Allow them the enjoyment to do that. There are a lot of things in this world I can not afford, but I don't yell at people that can!

Fair thought, I’d say a modern SLR would cost around the same as a modern digital DSLR - $1.5k+US however I don’t think it would be built to the same quality of the cameras from yesteryear. Don’t think we have the skill for it.
I think the existence of the secondhand market makes it tough for new camera makers especially film as they are competing with it.
Ilford has a little digital camera that cost new for around $50us which has autofocus, light meter, sensor, proprietary battery ETC , I guess I would have like to seen some more of those extra features on the camera at this price point.
But alas, you make a good point that this is a small production in a small niche market. This will make it a higher price. And the fact that they made it at all is good starting point.
As always, I love your comments 🙏

I have a Minolta Hi-Matic 7s II. It's literally the camera the Pentax 17 should have been. They could have built it to the original specs of the Minolta, put in a modernized light meter, and called it a day. For little to none development effort.

Although this camera doesn't appeal to me, I can see a big market for it among newcomers to film photography. It's nice, small, and pocketable with the addition of a pouch. I don't know if that's in the kit, but it's certainly easy enough to find. In an age of very expensive film the half frame format makes sense. The outfit is guaranteed to work and comes with two rolls of film. While you may think it's priced to high, we will see what the market decides. They will probably sell a bunch of them.

The Pentax 17 is way, way better than my first camera, and considerably better than my second camera. Half frame? Zone focus? Hey, both of my first two cameras were 110 Format with FIXED focus, fixed shutter speed, fixed aperture. And I had no idea what I was doing at first, but by the time I got into the second one I was taking some okay snapshots at least.

I think film enthusiasts forget that point and shoots have been making a comeback. And most of them don't even have a good lens, from what I've seen the pentax 17 lens is pretty sharp to the point that is probably sharper than the half-frame resolution can render.

I feel people are missing the fact that is NEW, you can go and buy NEW. there are a lot of people out there that don't like used stuff that is why thrift shops are filled to the brim with stuff, Part of the film niche appeal is that a lot of it is indie/vintage aesthetic .
This camera is for the people that are buying 2k USD Fujifilms X100V and want a film camera. Plus like me the people that are getting tired of buying point and shoots that break on the 3rd film roll. And don't want to carry their heavy SLRs with their heavy lenses.
The only thing that I'm critical about is the aesthetic it just looks old and not in a good way, my Minolta 7000 looks more 80s than this camera. I think it would've benefited from X100V aesthetics.

U get to use the snapshot style cos of the 72 frames and dont have to constantly think of of should i take this shot cos it cost to much.. U can aachieve the winogrand like snapshot style with the lofi grainy aestheticsof daido. No loud motor makes u stealthy esp when shootintg candid in a apublic space. Built in flash for close shooting that gives that pop in a photo. Best thing is that it has warranty.
It replaces all the overpriced point and shoot camera market . It is just the first step. surely they will come out with different models later on to appeal to diifernt market segments. Its like why do people use tiny Ricoh GR cameras when they can buy bigger and better cameras for the same price.

I guess at least the Pentax 17 will work better than your microphone. 😛
Ok, this camera leaves something to be desired, but it is new. There is an overvaluation of the old when the reality is that no company expected their cameras to continue being used for more than 10 years (continuous consumption is the basis of capitalism). And let's be honest: old lenses are no better than current ones, in terms of polishing and coating, so they have more definition. There are second-hand cameras in good condition, but it is not unusual that in a short time you come across surprises such as shutters that begin to fail, fungus and separation on the lenses, corrosion on the metal, etc. Time is relentless.
Nobody is saying that the Pentax 17 is a camera for professional use, it is a portable, small, light, casual camera, to always carry with you and, yes, with excellent modern glass optics (which surpasses the old Olympus Pen lenses).
The price could be lower, it is true, but they also sell you the guarantee, that you open it and ready to take photos, there will be service and original parts for at least 10 years. And like any new project, they seek to recover the costs of development

@shutterslaps4938 I first learned about the Auto 110 from a review in Popular Photography magazine around 1980. Then, in 1984, I was stationed in Korea while in the US Army. I went to the Post Exchange, and there it was. The Auto 110 Super kit. It came with 3 lenses, an auto winder, and a flash. I still have the complete kit. The Super has an exposure competition button. I haven't used the flash in decades because the threads stripped out were it screws on to the camera. Even with my Epson 750 Pro scanner, you can oly squeeze so much out of a 110 negative. Another reason why I'm not big on the half frame idea..

@shutterslaps4938 One of my most memorable moments with the 110 was in Daegu, Korea. I was on leave and doing some sightseeing, and I noticed that there were a lot of kids with their parents lining the street. I was told that it was children's day and they were waiting for the Pope. Though I am not Catholic, I knew this was a historic event. I had 3 shots left and needed to get some more film. I found a small camera store, and there had to be 20 Pentax Auto 110s in the place. I bought a few rolls and looked for a good vantage point. With the auto winder on the 110 looked like a small pistol. I had to remove the lens to convince a police officer that it was just a camera. I took 4 shots with the 50mm lens, and one was right on the money. I was about 20 feet away.

If you look at ASP-C point and shoots, they all come out to over 1K new. That’s because the sensor is the most expansive part. The 17 might seem expensive to you because of the price of decades old cameras and the fact that film isn’t the only capture medium anymore.
