- Me playing my own transcription of Oscar Peterson's Version of "Perdido", recorded 1968 on his first (and greatest Solo Record). I actually transcribed (and am practising) the whole record. I will tape all pieces over the next months. By then I hope to figure out how to get better audio and video quality.
This first attempt is to celebrate Oscar's upcoming 82nd birthday - Long live the chief
I learn so much from transcribing that I don't consider it a burden. When I want to put a piece onto paper, I set a daily goal, sometimes 8, sometimes 16 bars. I try to do it every day to be able to stay "inside" the piece. It gets easier after some time
Excellent transcription!!!! I've loved that track since the first time I heard it. Great to hear someone with both the ears and the chops to do transcription and performance!!!! I started transcribing it once and got to the first measure and .... Now I'm listening to you!
Thanks - it took quite a while to put that on paper...
Beautiful! I've never heard anyone play an Oscar transcription any better!
Superb!
Let me tell you: there are those who criticize musicians who transcribe and play note-to-note, and they say that it's not original and all that nonsense...
It's very simple: they can't do it, so they look down on it.
Hey Mollegiante,Thanks for watching my OP.Let me return the Compliment,Great work.I agree with you there is muuch to learn in transcribing others work.OP,Tatum and many others in jazz piano are as worthy of "rote" study as any 20th century composer of classical piano music.
Absolutely brilliant! Ten stars sir, this magnificent performance deserves no less :-)
In my humble opinion, one of the all time great piano performances on RUclips, up there with Horowitz, Pollini, Tatum, Monk et al, (just wished that stride bit could've gone on longer!) Pure genius. Thanks a million!
Thanks a lot - I am not in that class of players you mentioned but I keep working.
wow dit moet een echt monnikenwerk zijn geweest! Moet echt eeuwen geduurd hebben om dit allemaal uit te schrijven, chapeau!
Amazing...perfect...and enjoyable!!!
That is absolutely wonderful. Not just the playing but being able to transcribe it through continuous listening. Well done if I do say so.
Very impressive - transcription and performance.
Excellent in general and very cool walking bass.
Merveilleux et évolutif , progressif ! la classe
Thank you!
Outstanding!
I love it! Great job. Has to be the best solo jazz piano album of all time. Start to finish, just amazing.
Wow, what a talent!!
I've always loved this Oscar's solo. You're amazing!
Thanks a lot!
What an outstanding brilliant pianoplayer you are!
Ok
This is ridiculous amazing.
I was thinking as this buffered; surely his can't be the one from 'Exclusively for My Friends'?'
He'd have to an absolute genious to be able to play that, I thought!
Unbelivable - totally incredible and stunningly brilliant! Well done! Now, tell me you didn't transcribe that by ear? Did you?
Very great job! Must have been a hell to check out all these notes!
Oscar would be proud!
thanks guys for the friendly comments. If anyone needs the transcription please send me a message.
I think we've got a new Peterson! ;-)
WELL DONE!!
Wonderful!
Two things come to mind: Wow! You have terrific chops! and That was a lot of work to transcribe! Your technical proficiency is amazing. I look forward to more posts from you. *****
It's one of my favorites as well - thanks!
Fantastic!
your technique is amazing!! im always amazed when i hear transcription of oscar.
Probably one of the Hardest classic ever to play, as Oscar's version...
Hey Man, You nailed it! Great sound, as close as Peterson' s. The master had for sure a incredible way of playin' dynamics, but I wonder if you'd played on a Grand Action...you'd be advantaged too.

Thanks for all the nice comments! Hope to be able to add another transcription video very soon - greetings michael
Wow! Great stuff. Thanks for posting this. "My Favorite Instrument", the one this arrangement is on, is my fave OP disc. You do a wonderful job.
I'm amazed..i,ve heard that record a lot of times.."Perdido" is one of my favourites..its the best transcriptions ever...you are a genious...I have made "Bye bye blackbird from that record on notes if anybody are interested.
All best, Tom Pedersen
thanks - I play regularly on the boesendorfer grand of my teacher - and I hope one day i'll own one
Well, it has now been 13 years. Have you transcribed all of the solos yet from this album? I just finished "Someone to Watch Over Me."
Brilliant!
Great job dude! Did you write it all out? If so you should post a PDF of the transcription, cause there are some classic Oscar licks in this! I would be sooo grateful to get the transcription of this tune :)
wow! Das ist wunderbar!
Keep it up!
OK, which idiot gave it less than 5 stars???? Completely beyond me how anyone could find this other than completely wonderful. Marvellous, Bravo!!!
thanks - I can't put the transcription out there because that would break copyright restrictions.
Thank you - there is already a japanese transcription on the market. But the pay-off of the work was the eartraining anyway.
great finger technique! and seemingly also good ears^^. I can`t believe you have learned all this by heart...if i were you I would sell the transcribed notes in order to get a little sallery for all the time youve invested to copy that
this is amazing! really well played!
there is someone on this site performing a miriage transcription, check him. I always loved "mirage". Which version you prefer, Paris or Montreux?
WOW very impressive, how long have you been playing? how long did it take you to learn?
Well done!
omg, did you really want to transcribe this one? It must have been so hard, and timetaking. Many hours work, a great result, hopefully you learned enough from transcribing :D
thanks - I am sure there quite some people around who play OP's stuff better than me - I am a short guy with rather small hands and have to leave out quite a few of his left hand tens, for example in the stride part. This is my own transcription btw - I actually transcribed every single tune from "my favorite instrument" - unaware that there is a transcription floating around in Japan - But I still would have done it on my own - great ear training ...
Thanks, Tim - but to be honest, I did not learn this by ear, I transcribed it and then learnt the written music (still of course checking the recording for phrasing and sound)
thanks daniel! I am german, currently living in Berlin
that was incredibly well done. how'd you manage to transcribe it? some of those voicings must have been rough
not yet, but I will look for him...
on point my friend.
Thanks Ron!
excellent dude
wowwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!please give the sheets of your briliant transcription
Well, it has now been 13 years. Have you transcribed all of the solos yet from this album? I just finished "Someone to Watch Over Me."
I know - I have transcribed the full album. "Someone" is a great solo, but very hard for small hands like mine.
You are geniu..
thanks - I will check your uploads right away
No, its a german Upright from FEURICH, but it has a built-in digipiano application...
please do so. I would love to hear that. I am not very familiar with Oscar's early work.
you can be proud to be able play OP tunes !
Bravo
super - bleib dran! Viel Spaß weiterhin
How do you get transcription?
thanks for the applause. I haven't done tin tin deo, but as far as I remember there is a guy out there who does it
thanks, sergio, I am going to listen to your perdido version...
Can you send me a link for the transcription book please?
yeah, lets do that!
I'm transcribing this song
That was just amazing!!
Anyone know about a site where I can find cheats/notes by Oscar Peterson??
5:26 always makes me think he is quoting Mrs. Robinson by Simon and garfunkel.
this was actually the last track from the Peterson Album I put on paper. So I had gained some experience...
is there a way i can give you more than 5 stars??
Thanks :-), I am currently looking for an affordable not-to-grand piano, and I think I'll settle for a KAWAI. The Boesendorfer will be the next step...
not yet - unfortunately I don't have enough time because of a non-playing job...
@cedgray Thanks! It is hard to match oscar's time, as we all know....
thanks, tooobsten, but they will never be another Oscar.
I didn't count, but I assure you it took a couple of weeks steady work
echt schwer zu knacken das stück. einen chorus hab ich im hirn! drück mir die daumen :-)
Yes, I did it, unaware that there was a transcription floating around in japan, but happy anyway for the learning experience.
I took some time, i tell you :-) No genius here, but just mere stubbornness
Great! We should work together!
great job, but what Ghost Rider said, u will really fuck up ur shoulders if u play like that all the time. but very well transcribed and very good imitation of oscar
@Oleeivind Thank you. Send me a private message and I might be able to help you finding what you're looking for.
if you don't think your stubbornness inst genius, you don't know yourself.
sure - just message me your e-mail.
Greetings
youre excelent but you need new stings in youre piano rusty stings do not ring right
even if you tune them hey man you are excekent
Dude, move a little closer to the piano, you are gonna hurt your shoulders!
