    I was fortunate to see 4472 in Southeast Queensland Australia in 1989 with the NSW Railways 3801 which is a Streamlined Pacific. great experience and I do have the Hornby oo model with loco drive. Saw it again in 2007 at York, all pulled apart for a re-build.
    I think this TT model is great but I wish that Hornby would get rid of those fixed trailing trucks. You can see it in the video with the wheel on the drivers side sitting off the rail.
    I believe that most modeler's would prefer a working trailing truck than the way it is now. Their old 3mm scale Pacific had a working one.
    Great video as usual Sam and looking forward to the next one.

    Sam I like this version of the Flying Scoot. The livery is crisp and the details for such a small scale is very good. I just the price wasn’t so high but it is just a sign of the times. I think Hornby is still the standard that other manufacturers have to aspire to. Hornby has had it’s problems of late but I think they will work through them. I just wish we had the same enthusiasm for 00 or HO trains you all have in Britain. If I were a younger man I’d move to your country. Great video looking forward to more of your videos.

    Cracking review again Sam. Our 1st reaction was wow, but then there seems to be so much sloppiness that we would return it pronto. Especially the outline around the name plate and that huge mishap with the paint at the back (or whatever it is) would drive us go mad immediately. And there are so many rather slapdash visual manufacturing defects :( That tape btw has the potential to drag on a pilot wheel or axle resulting in pauses in rotation in combination with the H's deformed curved TT:120 track (banking outwards)... Easily removed but still...
    As for motors..., as far as we have seen, all European continental TT brands have a 5-pole... All of them, even H's Arnold TT brand. So why not for H TT...?
    A question from our side Sam... Have you been able to contact H about that nasty geometry issue with the curves of H TT track...? Would like to see their reaction. It is said that Simon Kohler always responds, so that would be an interesting exercise...

    • @OlivierGabin
      @OlivierGabin Год назад +2

      Good points. The finish is perfectible, to say the least. And, for the UK market, you have N models with a better drivetrain, Dapol ones for instance.
      As I said, if you want TT settrack, go direct to Tillig, Hornby one is a complete joke.

    • @lindaoffenbach
      @lindaoffenbach Год назад +2

      @@Haymarket47 The 'good enough' mentality might work for some, but making a full circle with H TT makes ~365° instead of 360. Consequently, by correcting this by allowing some slack results in a ~2mm gap between the two connecting inner curved rails. Pardon me but geometry not mathematically correct is absolutely bonkers and unheard of. On top, the curved tracks bank outwards. The latter can be resolved by pinning down the tracks but it is a very poorly executed job. But having an incorrect geometry in the first place is simply atrociously idiotic.

    Hi Sam, great to see your objective reviews of these new to the market products. You do seem to be a little more forgiving of paintwork problems than you used to be (the back of the tender on this, the lettering on the review of the last dapol loco). I wonder if there is a more scientific method of measuring tractive effort than does it have a metal running plate. What would be really useful for those of us trying to make layouts in a smaller space is maybe maximum gradient with 3 coaches?

  • @jumper123910
    @jumper123910 Год назад +3

    I disagree with you Sam in relation to the motor. Kato, Atlas and others can manage a 5 pole skewed motor with flywheels in N scale and have been doing that for about 30 years. TT is considerably larger than N Scale, so there is no excuse especially with the price and a new range.

    Lovely model of Scotsman in original condition as Class A1: 180lb boiler, short travel valves, and first LNER livery. High boiler fittings (GNR loading gauge), and no bufferbeam cut-outs.
    Error by Hornby having the LNE coat of arms on the cabside though - that was done for the 1924 Wembley Exhibition, for which Scotsman was given a highly polished finish, brass-trimmed splashers, polished wheel rims and axle-ends, trailing truck and tender suspension. As late as 1928 when 4472 was used for the first 'Up' non-stop Flying Scotsman, the locomotive still sported the highly polished trim, although by now wearing '4472' on the cabside and just 'LNER' on her then new corridor tender. At that point she'd also gained long-travel valves, and cut-down boiler fittings to conform to the standard LNER loading gauge.
    So, either Hornby should have provided this, or given us the loco as presented here, but just with a small plate on the cabside, which would have represented her 'as built' condition.

      I have seen dozens and dozens of railway modellers, mostly older guys, reviewing TT (I'm amazed there is any Hornby TT left given that almost every RUclips channel has bought a set just to tell us they would never consider using it!) and acting like there is simply no market for it.
      I don't think a lot of these guys realize that for Millennials, the kind of space required for a 00 railway is an unaffordable luxury. Having a spare room is a pipe dream for a lot of people our age, let alone a spare room that is so spare it can be given over entirely to a hobby.
      I've gotten a little fed up with some channels acting baffled at the possibility that anyone might be interested in smaller layouts.

    • @SamsTrains

      Thanks a lot Andrew - it sure is great for beginners, particularly if you're short on space... perfect! I don't agree with the RUclipsrs who say there's no market for it - I think there's a risk, and I haven't seen evidence that there is enough of a market for this for it to catch on... but the fact is that nobody knows for sure yet. The popularity of these videos suggests that there's a lot of interest in the scale. We'll have to see if they continue covering the scale or not ;)

      @@davidbarr9343 I'm looking at N scale, the loco detail isn't the same but you can create a really interesting layout in a small space and much as real modellers mock train sets as "things that get put away", Kato's unitrack offers the chance to make a really exciting railway that is easy to pack up if you can't permanently give space over to a hobby.
      It's actually interesting to me that everyone is rambling on about Hornby's marketing and yet they have all missed what seems like the most obvious issue to me. You can only get TT with a large express loco, but small layouts are most fun for shunting. Kids will get bored watching the Mallard go in circles, you need a little tank engine or diesel shunter.

    • @davidbarr9343
      @davidbarr9343 Год назад

      @@garydougill7478 Sorry for delayed reply. I agree with what you posted. Hornby have a plan to expand the TT range and I would imagine smaller locomotives an shunters wil be included. However, I think that the expansion of the range will depend heavily on the sales of the introductory sets/accessories. N scale is great for people that have limited space as well. My partner would go mental if she thought that I was going to turn a bedroom into a Railway, that is why I have contented myself with n scale. TT looks promising but there is an issue with the track. I believe from what Hornby has stated that the issue is sorted when fixing the track to a baseboard but I have yet to see anyone on RUclips demonstrating this. For me the Jury is out on this matter.👍

    I think these locos don't have a front NEM pocket so you can't fit a coupling at the front. Is that correct?
    I also read that there is an easy fix with the curves that come out of the factory too tight. A simple twist or flex outwards frees the rails from the sleepers, restores the correct geometry and means they sit flat. Perhaps in your next TT review you could test that theory?

Even UK N by Dapol or Graham Farish looks better and have an overall better finish. About I mentioned the different size curves Bachmann and Atlas make, Atlas also makes flex track in N gauge, I've got a couple of pieces of N scale flex track, maybe you should take some measurements of the area inside the TT scale circuits and use some flex track for making the N scale circuits

    A comparison with the Dapol N scale model of the same engine would be interesting... The Dapol model is sold at the same price.
    First impression overall, this engine seems to be manufactured on the scroogy side. As is, for my own, I won't pay over GBP125 for her due to the lack of die cast and the little mishaps on manufacture. The Dapol N model looks better finished on the pictures I have seen. And the Hornby model has a wonky trailing axle on your view, the starboard wheel is lifted above the track, while the port one is in place. Track or axle problem ? If you can check that, that would be nice.
    Same mechanism, correct but not above that. First time I see that on a model engine : a wobbly rear driving axle... Anyway, the dynamic qualities are acceptable.
    For me, the model is overall acceptable, but better can be done for the price. A direct comparison with the Dapol N scale model would be interesting.

      Having one of these and 17 Dapol A3s I'm enjoying the TT. My Hornby A1 also appears to have a wobbly axle, but it is actually the paint that is off centre by about a third of a millimetre. Dapol's A3 is a lot noisier than the Hornby one as the motor is in the tender and drives the loco through a driveshaft.

    You know, the more I think about it, the more I suspect if I was starting out in model railways I'd probably go for TT.
    The prices, if you are in the TT club, are pretty reasonable, the detail is much closer to OO than N, I need to see a 66, 08 and maybe a Pannier/Prairie/Jinty if they do one to make up my mind, then I just might consider (dum dum dum) changing gauges? Yikes.

  • @GosportRailworks
    @GosportRailworks Год назад

    I have to say, coming from N Gauge, I'm a little underwhelmed by the mechanism of the engine, I've got various Farish engines which perform better at slow speed than the TT Scotsman, drawbar connections which are far tidier and separately fitted buffers to add!
    I think a good comparison to what TT offers is to look at what N offers in relation.

    • @survivingworldsteam
      @survivingworldsteam Год назад +1

      Notice when describing the mechanism it also has no flanges. I think the problem is the A1/A3/A4s did not have a separate trailing truck, the trailing axle was mounted in the mainframe and used side to side play to negotiate curves.
      This could not be modeled in OO/TT, so in both instances, the trailing wheels have no flanges, and are made to ride slightly above the rail, as you pointed out.

  • @HighFell
    @HighFell Год назад

    You have been spoilt Sam, many of us remember HD and Triang and stuff upto the 2000’s that in OO didn’t have half of this detail! The technical side on TT 120 is impressive turned brass bearings, spring loaded pick up connectors, there are still OO big players who don’t fit any bearings! I’m loving my TT 120 experience and it’s not just Hornby, I have Arnold, Piko a bit of a disaster with a Tillig loco, but a Roco one on the way as we speak. I am staggered by the quality of Hornby’s TT 120 range especially when you do the price check with continental TT120, pretty much I paid same for a single Diesel Electric from Piko as the complete Easterner set. The sound decoder was same again and 3 months later I am still waiting at least with Hornby they don’t take the money until they are ready to send it out! Something you might look at is the general rule that it is more costly to make things smaller so in that sense it’s all looking pretty good. The sets though are jaw droopingly good value. Oh and you shouldn’t believe everything on the internet, the track geometry is perfect but… and it’s not a perfect situation.. in manufacturing some curved pieces have tightened up, a gentle flex of the track cures this, since Hornby were made aware of this they are on it at production level. I know you have been the victim of nasty comments in the past so I know you will appreciate some of the appalling abuse aimed at TT120 and those that have chosen to adopt this new (to UK) and exciting opportunity to get into or back into a fantastic hobby. You really need a bigger board… TT 120 will pull you in 😁

      If I started again from the beginning I would definitely go with N gauge because of the size and the huge range from so many different manufacturers and I can still get sound fitted locomotives. Hornby TT scale is new and so you don't have any real choice, unless you go to continental TT. I am going to stay with HO as I have way too much invested into it to change down to N gauge.
