His eyes grew wide because deep inside, he knows and remembers Zack, but his brain is suppressing these memories to keep him from breaking the "coping" mechanism. The physical pain is his brain trying to muffle out the psychological pain. All throughout this game, Cloud is grieving Zack (along with Nebelheim, his family, his dreams) in a complex and broken way. It really adds an element of sadness to this scene when you realize that his reaction to the intense pain, was a reaction to Zack's name.

After Zack's death Cloud's brain essentially broke and to save himself he took on Zack's persona believing everything Zack did to be what he did which is why he believes he was a SOLDIER. So when Aerith mentioned Zack's name his brain blocked it out so it could keep up its persona because without it Cloud could just fall apart. Does that explain enough for you
Not me shedding a tear to Zerith always T^T. I have to say that when she said “Gotta look forward, not back” did kinda hurt. It felt to me how she grieved a lot during the time Zack disappeared for a long period of time eventually leaving him into a vivid memory to Aerith. Just.... AHHH!!! It hurts T^T I played crisis core years ago but my child self was just so into Zerith back then till now that I still remember their plan to sell flowers together!! man ff7 remake was my first ff game and after watching ff7 crisis core and og ff7 lets play these dialogue make so much sense. I see the whole game in general in a different way that's crazy
Well, in the Advent Children storyline, she actually ends up only ever dating Zack, never Cloud. She dates him in Crisis Core, then has a very brief flirt with Cloud in the original game that doesn't even include a single kiss, and then she is back with Zack in lifestream. At the end of Advent Children, you see them being together side by side in lifestream twice. Then, she comes back to FFVIIR and loses some of her memories of the other timeline because of the Whispers. So now she is actually for the very first time getting over Zack and falling for Cloud. We'll see how it turns out though, because Zack is now alive in some place, some time... so... yeah. That's gonna be one heck of a love triangle in the Rebirth.

Aerith from the original game definitely was only attracted to Cloud because of his resemblance to Zack. But Cloud from Remake branches off from the original storyline almost immediately because of Sephiroth's influence on the Remake timeline. And notice, that Cloud is much nicer to Aerith in the Remake because of that. He first meets her not when she is selling flowers, but when she is in danger - and he rescues her. He becomes her new hero instantly, he is not just a convenient body-guard from the start like in the original. Because they spend much more time in Midgar in Remake, she also gets to know him a lot better, and they have a lot more fun. Just look at their interactions in the Wall Market. The way she is jealous about his hand massage. The way she is intoxicated with Cloud's on-stage dance. The way they look at each other when Aerith is all dolled-up. They are kicking off VERY strongly, none of it ever happened in the original game. They spend several chapters of the game all alone, just the two of them, without other love interests like Tifa interacting with Cloud, and that's why Aerith really starts to fall for him before they become just two members in a bigger crew, where private romance is a lot less comfortable and plausible. So yeah, while Aerith in the original game had barely a tiny flirt with Cloud, in the Remake timeline, Cloud and Aerith might end up a lot closer. And that'll make things a lot harder for Zack if he finds a way back into their timeline eventually. In the OG, Aerith always belonged to Zack, and Tifa to Cloud. Before, and after their death, Zac and Aerith were always together, while Cloud moves in with Tifa and takes care of their adopted kids with her, they become one family by the events of Advent Children, and even though he is crushed by Aerith's death, he eventually gets over it and embraces this role fully. In this new timeline, anything might happen. Cloud may end up with Aerith, and Aerith may never even die to rejoin Zack. Who knows? We'll see.

i see a lot of ship wars in the comment section, people love to go into extremes but this is how i interpret it: zack was her first love and she never got any closure which made things harder; however, she is allowed to move on and fall for cloud (or any other person), even though zack will always hold a place in her heart. what bugs me at times is that a lot of shippers act like aerith can't or shouldn't move on from zack and that is kind of a terrible mindset. she is a young girl, she can obviously fall for another guy. even if her fate is what we all know, that doesn't mean she can't grow feelings for another person and the remake made that clear, at least for me. cloud and aerith have great chemistry and regardless if you ship them or not, you can't deny that. the "love triangle" between cloud, tifa and aerith in the game is ambiguous for a reason otherwise it wouldn't exist. you're obviously free to ship whoever you want but i just wish people were a little bit less biased when it comes to ships and just enjoyed the story for what it is. i can appreciate zaerith like i can appreciate clerith and cloti.

Me, who has only played the remake and hasn't touched the original ff7 or crisis core: ah yes, Zack. I try to avoid spoilers, so far the only things I know are Zack is the one areith loved and areith dies at the end.
They had points in the game where they could've put zack in there, like when cloud's self was talking to him when he was passed out. Could've inserted Zack in there.
Loved this line. I find it really beautiful that only when Aerith learn to accept herself that she finally could be reunited with Zack. In OG, only when she finally wanted to start to learn about Cloud as Cloud and not as Zack, was when she died and meet Zack there. In Remake, since she was probably a little more aware, she acknowledge this earlier and say "gotta look forward not back", and then Zack is back and possibly being alive. When she accepts her fate and feelings, she finally gets to meet her soulmate. This part of Zerith is seriously beyond beautiful to me.

Most of the things you'll find on internet are just fan theories so none of them are actually facts, so even if I give my answer, it'll be my own opinion instead of facts. If you ask me, Zack is alive in the Lifestream dimension. Kinda like an alternate timeline but not really. His presence would definitely change things, but since it's in another dimension, it'll probably just change things indirectly. But again, that's just my fan theory. Nothing is confirmed. I'm afraid I can't answer that until the next or next next parts of the Remake is out, when everything is answered by the developers.

Aerith is a goddess/spirit guide (healer), she's not what you think (why Cloud falls into her bed of flowers/church). Her name means flower (Death and all his pretty little flowers). You need to understand the game's basis: Sefirot/O Fortuna - there's upper/lower worlds in play. She is there to help Cloud ascend, why she says "look forward, not back." Just as Zack ascends. It's all about a hero's journey (Tarot/Zodiac/O Fortuna).

And notice, that Cloud is much nicer to Aerith in the Remake because of that. He first meets her not when she is selling flowers, but when she is in danger - and he rescues her. He becomes her new hero instantly, he is not just a convenient body-guard from the start like in the original. Because they spend much more time in Midgar in Remake, she also gets to know him a lot better, and they have a lot more fun. Just look at their interactions in the Wall Market. The way she is jealous about his hand massage. The way she is intoxicated with Cloud's on-stage dance. The way they look at each other when Aerith is all dolled-up. They are kicking off VERY strongly, none of it ever happened in the original game. They spend several chapters of the game all alone, just the two of them, without other love interests like Tifa interacting with Cloud, and that's why Aerith really starts to fall for him before they become just two members in a bigger crew, where private romance is a lot less comfortable and plausible. So yeah, while Aerith in the original game had barely a tiny flirt with Cloud, in the Remake timeline, Cloud and Aerith might end up a lot closer. And that'll make things a lot harder for Zack if he finds a way back into their timeline eventually. In the OG, Aerith always belonged to Zack, and Tifa to Cloud. Before, and after their death, Zac and Aerith were always together, while Cloud moves in with Tifa and takes care of their adopted kids with her, they become one family by the events of Advent Children, and even though he is crushed by Aerith's death, he eventually gets over it and embraces this role fully. In this new timeline, anything might happen. Cloud may end up with Aerith, and Aerith may never even die to rejoin Zack. Who knows? We'll see.

i see a lot of ship wars in the comment section, people love to go into extremes but this is how i interpret it: zack was her first love and she never got any closure which made things harder; however, she is allowed to move on and fall for cloud (or any other person), even though zack will always hold a place in her heart.
what bugs me at times is that a lot of shippers act like aerith can't or shouldn't move on from zack and that is kind of a terrible mindset. she is a young girl, she can obviously fall for another guy. even if her fate is what we all know, that doesn't mean she can't grow feelings for another person and the remake made that clear, at least for me.
cloud and aerith have great chemistry and regardless if you ship them or not, you can't deny that. the "love triangle" between cloud, tifa and aerith in the game is ambiguous for a reason otherwise it wouldn't exist. you're obviously free to ship whoever you want but i just wish people were a little bit less biased when it comes to ships and just enjoyed the story for what it is. i can appreciate zaerith like i can appreciate clerith and cloti.

Loved this line. I find it really beautiful that only when Aerith learn to accept herself that she finally could be reunited with Zack. In OG, only when she finally wanted to start to learn about Cloud as Cloud and not as Zack, was when she died and meet Zack there. In Remake, since she was probably a little more aware, she acknowledge this earlier and say "gotta look forward not back", and then Zack is back and possibly being alive. When she accepts her fate and feelings, she finally gets to meet her soulmate. This part of Zerith is seriously beyond beautiful to me.

Most of the things you'll find on internet are just fan theories so none of them are actually facts, so even if I give my answer, it'll be my own opinion instead of facts. If you ask me, Zack is alive in the Lifestream dimension. Kinda like an alternate timeline but not really. His presence would definitely change things, but since it's in another dimension, it'll probably just change things indirectly. But again, that's just my fan theory. Nothing is confirmed. I'm afraid I can't answer that until the next or next next parts of the Remake is out, when everything is answered by the developers.

Aerith is a goddess/spirit guide (healer), she's not what you think (why Cloud falls into her bed of flowers/church). Her name means flower (Death and all his pretty little flowers). You need to understand the game's basis: Sefirot/O Fortuna - there's upper/lower worlds in play. She is there to help Cloud ascend, why she says "look forward, not back." Just as Zack ascends. It's all about a hero's journey (Tarot/Zodiac/O Fortuna).
