Chi-Square Tests: Crash Course Statistics #29

  • Today we're going to talk about Chi-Square Tests - which allow us to measure differences in strictly categorical data like hair color, dog breed, or academic degree. We'll cover the three main Chi-Square tests: goodness of fit test, test of independence, and test of homogeneity. And explain how we can use each of these tests to make comparisons.

    I followed you through the explanation and enjoyed it until the point where you determine whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis. It would be nice in future to show what you referred to when comparing the results of your chi-square test to determine whether it is above or below the critical value (i.e a chi-square table)

  • @Aa.oeti59
    @Aa.oeti59 5 лет назад +87

    An easier way to calculate the expectant frequencies is to use the equation (total of column * total of row)/ sample size. So (161 * 479) / 1000 = 77.12. The way they present it is confusing.

    When I read Wikipedia about statistics, there seems to be some political division between advocates of Bayes theorem and advocates of traditional statistics. Is this division an illusion?

    • @y__h
      @y__h 6 лет назад +5

      Oh you meant Bayesians vs Frequentists? It's basically kinda like Mathematicians vs Physicists, or Pi vs Tau.

    • @mesplin3
      @mesplin3 6 лет назад +3

      Right. There is no disagreement on the math, right? They may just the disagree on the interpretation.
      For example both parties would agree that chi squared distribution is appropriate for this situation, yes?

    • @OlleLindestad
      @OlleLindestad 6 лет назад +6

      Bayesians and frequentists like to use different methods, but there's also a sort of philosophical divide over how to think about hypotheses and probabilities. I recommend reading some stats blogs if you want to know more. Wikipedia's stats articles can be nigh-on impenetrable, but there are a lot of good and accessible stats bloggers on both sides of the Bayesian/frequentist divide.

    I really appreciate that you guys are making these videos, but I was pretty disappointed in the statistics crash course.
    First of all I don't recognize any of the variable names on the screen. Using broken words like "Exp" or "Obs" is confusing as hell, in fact in product design it is considered an obsolete practice. Just use designated variable names like x and n.
    I appreciate the real life examples but stick to one example, and expand on it. Establishing an entirely new context in your mind every 2 minutes is not easy when you're trying to pay attention to the lecture. And you really have to explain the connection for each example, not just move on and give 3 more before the first one gets through.
    Her pace and way of talking really throws me off. I dunno if she doesn't have enough energy and she seems to assume I know everything, or if she's being drowned in distractions. She doesn't solve any problem examples and uses too many words to explain an otherwise simple concept. And what is that annoying noise when the text is being displayed? So distracting.
    I really preferred your Psychology crash course much better. Sorry 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Honestly these videos do move really fast. In my opinion you have to be quite familiar with statistics to get a benefit from the videos in just one watch. They're very wordy, and fast.

      It is for me because it processes in a conscience part of my brain. I have to do it the long way out on paper every time. The few people that can beat a classroom of people with calculators is because they process math in the SUB conscience part of their brain. So, if you're not good at math don't feel bad. You're probably good at language :D

    • @stephaniesmith3544
      @stephaniesmith3544 6 лет назад +2

      I have always preferred doing the workings out on paper because it's easier for me to handle the information that way. I study Engineering lol.
      Don't be discouraged! You make fewer mistakes when you write it all out, and it's people like us that get better marks.
      Also, in real world maths, mental maths isn't that important. Handling complex equations on paper/computer is infinitely easier/more reliable.
