I appreciate your lighthearted explanation of the helicopter crash. It was an accident that took away a beloved guitarist too soon. I was fortunate to meet and talk to Stevie in his early years while he, Tommy & Chris were setting up for a gig at the Waterworks in Waco, Tx. I'm a retired teacher now but in 1983 I was teaching less than a mile away so after school I was curious to see if the band was setting up and yes, there was a slightly ragged looking white van & SRV and his Double Troubles were huffing and puffing unloading equipment. With me was a set of photos I had shot of Stevie & band opening for Gregg Allman in Dallas the week before so I pulled in and walked in with them. Stevie and Tommy were very friendly while Chris was busy as drummers have a bigger job setting up. I told Stevie I had caught his show and asked if he wanted to see the pics and he pulled out a chair for me and we sat down together and chatted over the pics. He was enjoying looking over the photos of him and the band but was really impressed with the grand finale when Gregg Allman invited Stevie back on stage & they jammed for quite a while. I asked if he'd sign one and he said, "Which one? They're all good!" I said, "Pick your favorite". He did, flipped it over and signed: To Margie All My Best! Stevie Ray Vaughn" . I knew he needed to get back to setting up so I stood up, said I'd see them tonight, he hugged me real quick and the show was absolutely a knockout and yes, I took photos and Tommy Shannon grinned at me a few times. And yes I have all the photos which I cherish. In my life I was blessed seeing SRV & DT six times: 3 in Austin, once in Waco & twice in Dallas ~ all stellar shows. I am a pilot and musician and like to study aircraft incidents. Most of these incidents with musicians such as patsy cline’s incident is all due to spatial disorientation. Pilots like Randy Hughes were only qualified to fly by visual flight rules (VFR). VFR pilots fly by contact of the horizon, once they lose the horizon they have no way of perceiving if the plane is flying level or is in a slight bank while decreasing in altitude. Rather than doing what your plane instruments are telling you what you need to be doing, you are wanting to do what your body is telling you to do. Therefore most of the time gets the pilot and his passengers into a fatal situation. But I am not sure wasn’t it mentioned that the ski slope was surrounded by fog?
There was only ground fog based on the details I’ve read and it dissipated above the parking lot lights. The pilot flying SRV experienced spatial distortion (thank you for that terminology) because the surrounding hills blocked any light that would provide a horizon for a brief moment. He was 50ft from cleaning the hill...
@@nathanwyatt8955 in the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash the pilots were qualified for everything, but they thought they could make a 3 hour flight with an engine burning rich and miscalculated the fuel needed. Fortunately, running out of fuel is why there were so many survivors.
In SRVs case the pilots of all four choppers knew they had to just get something like 100-200' high and then they would be clear of the clouds and have full visibility of chicago. So they were instructed to fly straight up knowing they wouldn't be able to see anything for a while. SRVs chopper pilot somehow put a slight right control on it and ended up never clearing the fog. Im sure he started to realize something was wrong but since he didn't know which way was up there was no way to fix it even though I'm sure he was frantically trying

Dude, Please don't call musicians a--hole's. That's really not cool, and is very disrespectful. Stevie Ray Vaughan was a legend, and loved by millions around the world. The new's of Stevie Ray Vaughan's death was horrific! Those of us that loved him, still do. We lost a great talent, and loving person, that dreadful night. Thank you.
Lost so many great stars from plane/ helicopter accidents. Seems all the pilots had flaws? They all didn't have enough flying time, not enough experience. In Jim Croce's crash, Pilot Robert Elliott piloted the plane down the runway and took off, but barely became airborne when the twin engine Beechcraft E18 clipped a pecan tree just off the end of the runway and crashed, killing all passengers instantly, according to police. So sad.... 😭 ✈
Very sad indeed! I live by a small airport and lose sleep over know there is a majority of people flying over me that don’t know how to read their gauges.
He should have not been assigned to fly in the first place? Well he was and its ultimately his fault that subsequently took Stevies life. The helicopter pilot knew dam well he was not certified to fly by instruments. Bad judgment was his fault as he had celebrities on board for passengers and Instead of saying hey I'm not certified to fly in these conditions he just did. Well see what happened from a bad decision. Avoidable accidents make me pissed and I think what an idiot!!
Flying with no visual reference means relying on auto pilot, or your instruments if you are in manual control, to fly straight. Likely pilot wasn't aware of his drift/direction. Presumed NTSB checked the craft for evidence of mechanical malfunction.
Jimmie and his wife drove up there from Chicago and tried to get Stevie to ride back with them but he wanted to get back to Chicago as quickly as possible to get back to his finance/girlfriend.
The pilot in kobe bryants crash also did the same thing. Was trying to climb up in elevation. Then it became all open sky with lots of fog. And started making an aggressive left turn while quickly losing elevation. BOOM
Thanks for this video here, Question, If the Pilot was Not Certified to Fly the Chopper, and Not Instrument Knowledgeable, Why In The Hell Was he Flying this Chopper, Who the Hell Hired him to Fly It? That person should be held Accountable For The Loss Of Lives, What a Huge Loss Of A Great Musician, Or anyone, Cousin Figel
I want to comment on how Pilots Get to Fly If they are Not Qualified, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Pilot and Co-Pilot were have said to be Consuming Alcohol on Previous Flights, Aerosmith was to charter this plane before Skynyrd, they found out that the plane had a bad Engine and the Pilot was not the Best, According to What people have said, Having an Engine using more Fuel and A Bad Magneto, The Pilot and Co-Pilot Did NOT Put more fuel in The Plane, A Bad Oversight , And They Lost Thier Lives Over This, A Huge Tragedy for all, It Is Amazing that anyone Survived this Crash, Cousin Figel
I don't understand why you would say, (paraphrase), 'like every asshole musician that walks offstage then comes back for an encore'. I don't see those musicians as assholes. Or, maybe I just have a higher 'asshole tolerance'. I'm usually happy to have them come back and play another song. ...Please don't take my comment as some woke, over-sensitive, cry baby, bullshit. I'm a firm believer in the 1st amendment. Just curious.

Past doesn't mean 'over'. Whoever gave that pilot the OK to fly that copter is/was responsible for Stevie's death, as well as the other victims. I'm sure he knew it. Wrongful deaths for certain. 😞

@@TheAppalachianSon Perhaps, ALOT of money…? 🤨 🤫
Another interesting and well produced episode!
Thanks for sharing your video. I enjoyed watching. Take care and God Bless.

Why is it always the same “ the pilot wasn’t trained to fly by instruments?
At the 8 minute mark. I think you’re talking about spatial disorientation when you no longer can reference the ground in VFR conditions.
Thank you.
I like this channel!
Thank you, John! Working on the next video now.
i remember when it happened a very sad situation
It makes me sick 😫 it hurts me really bad I loved stevie ray vaughan I miss him so much
Lost so many great stars from plane/ helicopter accidents. Seems all the pilots had flaws? They all didn't have enough flying time, not enough experience.
In Jim Croce's crash, Pilot Robert Elliott piloted the plane down the runway and took off, but barely became airborne when the twin engine Beechcraft E18
clipped a pecan tree just off the end of the runway and crashed, killing all passengers instantly, according to police. So sad.... 😭 ✈
Very sad indeed! I live by a small airport and lose sleep over know there is a majority of people flying over me that don’t know how to read their gauges.
Jim Croce and SRV were the greatest losses to 20th century music, behind Lennon and Holly.
Thank you
Alpine valley east troy Wisconsin, , not elk horn. I spent many wonderful and magical nights there ,, some of the best times of my life, rip srv
SRV , One of my favs.
Can or would you explore the plane crash involving Reba McEntire’s band in church 1991? How about looking into Kobe Bryant? Maybe 🤔
Trying to stay focused on musicians on this channel so I can definitely look into Reba McEntires band. I haven’t heard about that one.
Tin Pan Alley. Such a beautiful being, not unlike Jimi. Sigh, the “what ifs” reverberate to this day.
Very familiar to a certain basketball stars pilot and chopper crash not long ago.
you mean rapist
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Flying with no visual reference means relying on auto pilot, or your
instruments if you are in manual control, to fly straight. Likely pilot
wasn't aware of his
drift/direction. Presumed NTSB checked the craft
for evidence of mechanical malfunction.
Jimmie and his wife drove up there from Chicago and tried to get Stevie to ride back with them but he wanted to get back to Chicago as quickly as possible to get back to his finance/girlfriend.
From the books I’ve read about Stevie he actually just wanted to get back to Chicago and talk to her because she was out of the country..
The pilot in kobe bryants crash also did the same thing. Was trying to climb up in elevation. Then it became all open sky with lots of fog. And started making an aggressive left turn while quickly losing elevation. BOOM
Another take out of a fame guitarist
They where all taken out.
Thee only hill around they hit. Shitty.
Literally!!
Whats that loud beap, it's annoying
Hell yeah man SRV is my GOAT
No that Helicoptor Pilot should not have been flying period if you look at the NTSB Report
Can't hear u bro
Audio editing is a skill you have to fail forward at (at least me anyway). I appreciate your feedback
The company definitely paid heavy fines in a lawsuit, but still… incredibly tragic
@@TheAppalachianSon I hear you, But this does not Bring Back The People,
And you believe it?
Dude this one stung bad. Just like RVZ and Gaines. Rip gunslinger.
Are you reading from notes just wondering why all the hiccups lol
Words is hard
Wasn’t Buddy Hollys Plane Crash The Same As Well As The Pilot Not Being Well Experienced.
It’s a joke and I take no offense. I’m just very dry with my humor. I love a good encore, you know, they make you think it’s over and it’s not, but you’re already out by the concessions, or even worse, rocking a pee, and here they come again to play another song. You enjoyed the show, but you were just trying to snag a giant pretzel with nacho cheese and beat the traffic... precious moments. Someone has been there.
I thought Stevie ray Vaughns brother died before SRV.
Past doesn't mean 'over'. Whoever gave that pilot the OK to fly that copter is/was responsible for Stevie's death, as well as the other victims. I'm sure he knew it. Wrongful deaths for certain. 😞
He died in a Helicopter not a Plane
Sorry but it seems to always be pilot error when the pilot dies and I don't believe it to be true.
7:59 Right handed people will move right & lefties will drift left while under the somatogravic illusion.
