- Discover Stranraer Scotland and the Castle of St John as we spend one day in Stranraer Scotland. On this Stranraer Scotland walking tour you will learn some of the towns history along with that of the Castle of St John. We will also see the George Hotel Stranraer now derelict on the way to exploring the Castle of St John. Once we have visited the Castle of St John we will then take a walk around Stranraer Harbour and Marina. Finally we will then stroll alongside Stranraer West Beach and then into Agnew Park.
*Stranraer*, also known as The Toon, is a town in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, on Loch Ryan and the northern side of the isthmus joining the Rhins of Galloway to the mainland. Stranraer is Dumfries and Galloway's second-largest town, with a population of 10,593.
Stranraer is the administrative centre for the Wigtownshire area of Dumfries and Galloway. It was formerly a ferry port, connecting Scotland with Belfast and Larne in Northern Ireland; the service was transferred to nearby Cairnryan in 2011 It lies 87 miles (140 km) southwest of Glasgow, 52 miles (84 km) miles southwest of Ayr and 72 miles (116 km) west of Dumfries.
The name comes from Scottish Gaelic An t-Sròn Reamhar meaning "the broad headland" or "the fat nose".

Thank you very much Paul for your trip round the 'toon' as it is called locally. I grew up there in the 1950s and 60s I left in 1970. I know every inch of it. Back then the castle was completely obscured by other buildings. It's so nice that it's been opened up and restored. Thank you for the views inside and the history. Stranraer looks like a very quiet place now compared to what it used to be; no ferries, no market. I look forward to seeing your other videos. Very well done.
Hi Norman, I'm glad I did Stranraer justice and I do hope the old George Hotel is restored. It was very quiet around the 'toon' and the castle sure was a lovely place to visit. It was free to go in as well which is always a bonus. I believe even the railway station at the harbour is closed now, temporary at least, as the line is unsafe at Ayr due to the hotel at, or near the station there being unsafe. I enjoyed my time in Stranraer and also took trips out to Portpatick and Dunskey Castle, the Mull of Galloway lighthouse and the Kirkmadrine Chapel. The Kirkmadrine Chapel gave me the creeps but still a lovely setting all the same. I'm actually back in Scotland from next weekend for 2 weeks so should hopefully have plenty of video material upon my return. I'm happy that you enjoyed this trip around the place where you grew up and that you saw inside the restored castle. Thank you very much for watching and your lovely comment, Paul
You’re doing great work, my friend, truly appreciate that.Keep doing the great work, this world needs more of it.

The Castle of St. John and Stranraer, Scotland, are such hidden gems, and your video brought out their charm beautifully. 🏰 I love how well-preserved the castle is, with its incredible stonework. Stranraer looks like a charming town with a rich history and picturesque harbor. Your narration was top-notch and added so much to the experience. Can't wait to see more of your adventures! 😊👍
I'm glad you enjoyed the tour and it seemed kind of strange to have a castle tower sat in the middle of a town. It's great that it's free to enter and views from the roof are worth the climb. Thank you so much for taking time to watch. Have a great week 🙂👍Paul
Hi Paul, thanks for walking us there in the Castle. 👌 Bothered with the light 💡😁😄😨
Love the historical boat ⛵ - with the plants - it's just unique! 🌱🌿
Hello, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour of castle and the tour of the town. That light was a bit off putting. The boar was pretty cool. Thank you so much for taking time to watch. I hope you're keeping well 👍🙂Paul

Hi Donna, they've done a good job refurbishing the castle and I'm glad you enjoyed the tour along with the town and harbour. Thank you very much for coming along for the premiere. Have a great week 🙂👍Paul
Hello Paul, This area is very peaceful and cozy. The castle of St John has a long history and is made of very sturdy stone. The view from the top is beautiful and it can see the entire town.
The harbour is very comfortable and I like the plants decorated on the boats. Thanks for sharing wonderful Scotland walking tour 😊👍Juli
Ho Juli, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour of the town and the castle. It's a peaceful part of the world. Thank you very much for taking time to watch. Have a great day 🙂👍Paul
I love these old castles - I wish we had old buildings like this here. Amazing it was built in the early 16th century. Love that it's free to enter and so cool to see your footage inside. It still looks in such great shape. Amazing views from up on the roof, wow! Beautiful little town. Loe the boat that is retired after being used to save lives. Looks so beautiful by the water with plants. Fantastic video as always! :)
We have an abundance of these old castles and they're always great to look around. This one sure was worth the climb to the roof for the views and had the roof to myself. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. Thanks you very much for watching. Have a great week 👍
Amazing Castle! Like 50 Thank you very much for sharing!
Even though this wasn't the area I'd visited in the oast, it did bring back memories and also make me curious when i might visit again. Thanks for the lovely share Paul- the castle was awesome too. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🇳🇿🙏
Hi Anita, it's an area I'd never been to before this visit and it somewhat surprised me how lovely it was. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour and I do enjoy a castle. Thank you very much for coming along for the premiere. Have a great week 👍🙂Paul
Hi Paul, enjoyed your tour around Stranraer and the Castle of St John. Beautiful views from the castle. Loved exploring and listening to your narration. The harbour was a lovely place to visit along with the shore. Really enjoyed your video xx Julie and Tony xx
Hi Julie n Tony, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour and my narration. The harbour is really lovely despite the wind on the day. Thank you very much for coming along for the premiere. Have a great week 🙂👍Paul
Hi Paul! I hope the council decides to restore the old hotel soon. I really enjoyed your tour of the castle. Fabulous views of the town and the harbour from the roof. Looked a bit too chilly for a dip in the ocean. The retired lifeboat garden was a really nice idea. Thank you for bringing us along ❤
Hi Julie n Lucy, I'm always skeptical about anything any council owns like this. It would be great if it was restored tho. The climb to the roof of the castle was certainly worth it. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour of the town and castle. Thank you so much for taking time to watch. Have a great weekend 👍Paul
Hi Paul. Thank you for the tour inside of the ancient castle. Its amazing how good it looks for its age, full of charm. The roof top view of the town is very nice! Its a nice looking place…I hope you enjoyed your trip. Thanks for the awesome tour. 👍😊🇨🇦
Hi Christine, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour of the castle and the town. The views from the top of the castle sure made the effort worth it. The castle is in a lot better shape than the younger hotel just up the road. Thank you very much for taking time to watch. Enjoy the rest of your week 🙂👍Paul
Very cool castle. Nice that you can walk through it and explore it for no cost.
The castle was pretty cool and almost unheard of to be free to enter. The views from top made the trip up there worth it. Thanks very much for taking time to watch 👍

That castle is amazing and interesting to hear it’s history. Brilliant 😊
Hi Cara, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour of the place and some of its history. Thank you very much for coming along for the premiere. Have a great week 🙂👍Paul
Absolutely superb Paul as always. Narration is just amazing, a mainstream channel needs to be watching this and grabbing you up 👍
Hi Nick, I do try my best with the narration. I will do more narration videos for sure when it suits. It would be cool if my own channel became a bit more mainstream. Then again it's already doing better than I ever imagined it would. Thank you very much for coming along for the premiere. Have a great week 👍🙂Paul
@@TheHikingHermitthe attention your getting is very well deserved. Your narration is top tier, just heard Attenborough on the radio advertising his next planet series and i just thought that should be Paul 👍
@@GENerationXplorers ha ha thanks...some of my narration videos are doing well...I'm almost like hell I shouldn't even appear in any of my videos any more. Of course I will but will also do the narration only ones too. I'm still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't like most people I guess. Thanks for the big thumbs up on the narration tho
@@TheHikingHermit we all love seeing you too Paul but the narration is genuinely world class. We watch a lot of tv that is narrated and the biggest sell is the quality of the narration. Think one of the mainstream tv channels would hit gold dust with you.
@@GENerationXplorers well it's a skill I never knew I had...I do get people saying I have a lovely voice quite often...I'm like that news to me...the things you find out on RUclips 🤣Meantime I will keep plugging away with my videos. Thanks again for the confidence booster.
Great info on the Castle of St John and the listed building.
Well done Paul. With so much contant covered I was hoping you might have taken a fishing rod over to the Stranrare pier where the trains roll in🎣🤣
Have a peaceful Sunday from Paul & Kathy GB🤝👍😊
Hi Paul & Kathy, I'm not sure about the fishing rod but should have visited the station to watch a train roll in. I did run the parkung at Agnew park on the Saturday morning tho. I found Stranraer a cheap place to stay so may return one day to explore a bit more of the area. Thanks for watching 🙂👍Paul
Thank you for sharing this vedio i see the beautiful place of your country😊😊

Hi Paul this town looked so good and the castle looked amazing, I've not been to a Scottish castle before so it's always good to see and hear the history of those up there 🙂 The harbour / marina here was lovely too and I enjoyed your tour 👍~ Anna
Hi Anna, I've been to a few Scottish castles and this one was quite quaint. It certainly stood the test of time better than the hotel. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. Thank you so much for taking time to watch. Have a great weekend 👍Paul

Hi Bruce and Otis, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour of the town and castle. Thank you very much for taking time to watch 👍🙂Paul
You visited a wonderful and beautiful place again today.👍👍
The Castle of St John has very different castle shapes and characteristics in Korea.
The photo zone of a small boat on the beach is impressive. Thank you for your efforts.
May God bless you always.💖💖
Only the tower of the castle has stood the test of time. We have all shapes and sizes of castle here in the UK. There are lots of them too. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour of the castle and the town. The retired boat was unique. Thank you very much for taking time to watch, my friend 👍🙂
Beautiful tour. I enjoyed watching friend🤙🏼

Nice one again. You hit lucky with weather again.
Thanks a lot Paul. Yeah I did seem to strike it lucky. Thankfully
What a beautiful and quaint little town! It's fun to see the architecture of the buildings. You must have visited during the week; the town seems sleepy or maybe it was a chilly day. Thank you Joking Hiking for another wonderful tour! Scotland so many wonderful places to visit! Have a great week! 😍
Hi Tracy, this is a video I've meaning to edit for months. It was from the end of May and this was on a Saturday afternoon. This area of Scotland does seem very quiet. I'd say perfect for a hermit 😂i'm glad you enjoyed the tour. Thank you very much for taking time to watch. Have a great week 👍🙂The Joking Hiker Paul

Hey, friends! Best wishes for all the success coming your way on your lovely travelling channel! Have a wonderful weekend 💖~
Wonderful tour Paul.... The Castle is Amazing, what a great place to explore. I probably would have ended up in a debtor cell back then lol.... The view from the top is so beautiful... Way to rock another great video buddy ✌️
Hi Jim, a bit behind on my comment replies. This place was pretty cool for free, especially from the roof. At least the debtor cell was more comfortable...well marginally 🙂Thank you very much for taking time to watch. I hope you're healing up and keeping well 👍Paul
wow the castle is so beautiful , nice trip
interesting history around this area of Scotland. The castle of St John looked very cool and those narrow stair case omg. Its great this was a police station how awesome is that? I love the views from up there x
HI Kate, the castle was pretty cool and had many uses over the year. I'm not sure I'd enjoy being locked up there when it was a police station tho. The views from the top made it sure worth the effort. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour and the history. Thank you very much for taking time to watch 🙂👍Paul
Paul.
Great job as always mate 👍
Thanks Phil and thanks very much for coming along for the premiere. Have a great week 👍🙂Paul
Cześć. Świetnie udostępnienie. Pięknie miasto 😊
Enjoyed this one Paul.
Stranraer always seems a pretty wild place when we’ve visited - but mainly passing through.
The boat for photos is great - lovely views across the harbour.
And the Castle is amazing. Love the views. A very strategic position there at the head of the Loch. Fascinating history.
Have a god week ahead mate.
Hi Dave, Stranraer was my base and did spend a day there exploring. It's pretty unique to get free entry to a castle and the views from the top were especially worth the trip. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour of the town and castle. Enjoy the rest of your week 👍🙂Paul
Well I’m pleased I’m not booked in at the George Hotel 😂though I’ll let you know if it’s improved 😃 The castle looks good except perhaps the scary prisoner and great views from the roof. Harbour side seems to be alot quieter than I thought it would be but a nice place to stretch your legs along there and through the gardens 👍
It wouldn't have been wise to book into that hotel. With the council in charge of it I don't hold out much hope of it being restored even tho it is a listed building. I do hope I'm wrong tho. The castle was free to enter so always a bonus. Stranraer was pretty quiet and this was a Saturday afternoon. I stretched my legs thro the gardens and down by the harbour that morning at parkrun 😂 Thanks for watching 🙂👍
It's a clean and beautiful place🥰
The sound of seagulls is also great
I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. Thank you so much for watching. Have a great day 🙂Paul

That puppet looking out of the prison cell was so creepy. Nice tour of this historic place. Also glad to see you are back home and about to show more of Scotland.
Yeah the puppet didn't look too happy being locked up in there. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour tho. I wish I could say I had a lot more to come from Scotland but this is from earlier this year. Can't wait to go back tho. Thank you very much for watching. Have a great week 👍🙂Paul
The Castle of St John looks very nice and very well kept. I loved the amazing stonework that is in such great shape after several centuries. Stranraer is a lovely town as well right on the harbor. Great job with the narration! 😊👍
Hi Anita, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. The older castle is in better shape than the younger hotel. I guess they built things to last way back when. Thank you very much for coming along for the premiere and the thumbs up on the narration. Have a great week 🙂👍Paul

I'm glad you enjoyed it Dan. I enjoy a good castle tour myself. Thank you very much for taking time to watch 👍Paul
Hi Paul.
Wow, is the castle owner's descendant a hiker? or your history vid was watched? Congratulations! Being recognized to public feels great, isn't it?
I am liking your history walking tour, not only your whispering voice, but your passion to Scotland. Your heart is there, I may say.
haha if you are perfectionist, watch out PPP sounds, haha, no big deal to may PPL anyway. I am just picky..
George Hotel would be marvelous when it is completed to be repurposed, but not demolished.
The castle has quite history to Scotland. wow, prison cell!! Those walls in the castle have stories to tell, I bet.
Thank you, Paul for time-consuming research and voice-over. Did you finish voice-over in one day? Voice tone changes day by day sometimes
Certainly the view from the top takes my breath away. haha what ? why did iJ think rooftop is orange. It is not Italy..haha
The sky is gloomy and winds are strong. The sounds of the waves are little rough...wow Winter is coming... Long cold months.
Your professional voice, voice tone and are recognized to the world!!! I bet the fact the castle owner fancy YOU...
More documentary to come in the future? well done, Paul Fabulous film...Bravo!!! Thank YOU, Paul.
Hi Ms Kayak, they watched my Dunskey Castle video. Their descendants owned both this castle and Dunskey Castle. Does that mean you like my documentary voice? I do like visiting Scotland. And well I do like to improve my videos, if I can, so what's PPP sounds? I'm skeptical as to whether the George Hotel will be repurposed but would be great if it was. I did the voice over in a day but I guess the volume of my voice can differ a bit. Orange roofing? ha ha IJ. The winds was pretty strong that day especially around the harbour. Ha ha is my documentary voice OK then? I will be doing more documentaries in the future. I will also do mix and match ones too. Thank you very much for coming along for my premiere. Have a great week 🙂 Paul
@@TheHikingHermit Regarding P sounds, you will hear air to the microphone so I asked if you have filter over the microphone. Then, you will be ok. Ahhh in the chant. iJ asked why those rooftops are nor orange....I guess she imagine those orange rooftops in Italy or elsewhere. Well done. I think you are very happy with your work and you have such a fan in high society. I am very proud of YOU, Paul.
@@ms.kayak7seas ah you mean the wind? Oh like the red roof tops in Munich. This is Scotland and not many red or orange roof tops. And well I try my best with the videos and there is always room for improvement. I think a lot of improvement but then I'm my own worse critic 🙂

Excellent trip 👍
Thanks 👍

🥇 Cheers 👍
I hope the council do restore the hotel, will definitely improve the town! It's a shame when they're left like that, it means the residents have less pride in the town and then the private buildings start to get neglected too. The castle looked great, could definitely picture it being a Victorian jail, can't have been nice being an inmate there. Nice wee walkabout, very quiet town with that kinda 'end of the road' feel to it.
Hi Matt, well they haven't done anything with the hotel for 6 years but we'll see huh. The castle sure was in a lot better condition than the hotel. Built to last. I'm not sure I'd want to be locked up in there tho. The guy in jail didn't look pleased. Thank you very much for watching. Have a great week 🙂👍Paul
