My father told me he attended Fort George for his basic training in June 1944. Before going south to Kent as a large Battalion. Somewhere they were attached to a more experienced battle group.
I apologise as I am not sure of the amount of troops and the whole story, history, going south etc.
He was part of the Black Watch and volunteered at Perth.
He met his close friend Joe McPherson at Fort George, they stuck together until the following summer when Private Joe McPherson was killed by a morning snipper. Joe was burried in a small village in Holland. The villagers were shocked as it was almost the last day of hostilities and honoured Joe by keeping his grave in place in the village instead of allowing the war graves commission to move him.
My father was initially training in the OTC, but was returned to unit for being late after a leave.
I hope someone may have other histories involved with Fort George. ...
