  • Philly McMahon talks about how systems let people down, analogy of a pond and how certain communities get unfiltered, dirty part of pond, which can go against them if they don’t fit into the culture (education, community, prison). He talks about supports that can prevent falling out of the system (comparison of him and his brother). How damaging prison can be but varied culture within it. The Leadership programme he runs and its impact on prisoners. Philly is an author, businessman and six times All-Ireland Gaelic Football medal-winner, winning his first All-Ireland medal in 2011. He has been a member of the Dublin Football Panel since 2010.
    He is passionate about sport and wellbeing and owns a number of companies associated with sport and nutrition.
    His first book, ‘The Choice’, is a bestseller, depicting in stark terms the impact of drug addiction on families in Ireland. Philly is a committed advocate for the decriminalisation of drug use.
    He holds a degree in Education and Training. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    He is making his own ripple now, he is showing the kids whats possible. Well done to him for it. The fish in the pond analogy is a brilliant way of looking at it.
