The Vedic Science Of Trataka

  • What is Tratak? Swami Satyananda in his discourses on Tratak explains: “The word Trataka means, ‘steady gazing’. The practice of Trataka involves gazing at a point or object without blinking the eyes. It is a method of focussing the eyes and in turn the mind on one point to the exclusion of all others. Through this method, all the attention and power of the mind is channelled into one continuous stream. This allows the latent potential within the mind to spontaneously arise.”
In the classical hath yoga text, Gheranda Samhita, it is classified as one of the shatkarmas, the six actions of cleansing the body and mind. Tratak is the last of the six, because it concludes the physically oriented practice, and prepares one for, or say acts as the stepping stone to the mental practices that leads to higher awareness. In a sense, Tratak acts as a bridge between Hatha Yoga and Dhyana Yoga.
Tratak is continuous gazing, it is not letting your mind wander. And when you don't let the mind wander, initially it struggles, it fights hard, but if you continue to gaze calmly, slowly the mind stops struggling. For a few moments, it stops. And when the mind ceases to function, the state of no-mind is attained, because the existence of the mind can only be sustained in movement, thought-processes can only be sustained in movement. Mind is a verb, it’s a continuous process. When there is no movement, when the thought-processes cease, you cannot think, the mind is no more.
Full alertness and awareness are necessary; because you can gaze even with dead eyes, you are looking at something, yet your mind is somewhere else, you’re reading a book yet registering nothing. You zone out. Seeing in this way leads to nothing. In this practice, you have to be in the zone. The meaning of trataka is not just your eyes, but your entire existence being focused through your eyes. So, it depends on your preference, whatever the object of meditation may be. If you like the flame of a candle, it's fine; if you like darkness, it's also fine. The Cross of Christ, the idol of Shiva or the Buddha, or a Yantra, regardless of the object, the essence lies in stopping the mind at one place, concentrating it, so that internal movements, internal turmoil, can cease, internal tensions can cease. You're just observing

It is completely astounding that I have come upon this video today - and I must also add that it seems there is always a comment like this one under these kind of videos, never thought I’d be that guy!
I attained this state completely by accident one day last week - I had had a very stressful day and was almost overwhelmed with stresses and worries, and in a moment of almost giving up, I sat on my sofa with my head leaning back with my gaze upwards - just as described here!
I had no intention whatsoever, was essentially just resigned to ‘zoning out’ and allowing myself some relief from constant planning and thinking. My eyes were open, and without purposeful intention I did not blink for a good time.
Eventually I became aware of not blinking, and almost as a sort of fun challenge, I opted to hold my gaze as long as I could as I was beginning to notice subtle changes in my vision, a sort of geometric organisation of the elements of my vision began to become apparent, almost as though pixelation was occurring and the order less
Textures of the ceiling above me began to take on a purposeful and deliberate quality, as if regimentally constructed, the elements of colour, texture, and form each existing independently and with complete clarity.
As I held my gaze, this sensation gradually subsided and my vision settled into a hyper defined state, all details becoming startlingly crystalline and radiant in their own right. With further time, this ceased to become apparent, pervaded instead by a sense of complete stillness.
The peripherals of my vision became as clear as my frontal vision, the birds flying past my window in my peripherals were solidly clear in movement and shape, and the same quality extended to
My hearing and sense of touch.
I had heard before of how blinking re-sets the brains perceptions, essentially beginning a new moment in the processing of the brain each blink and breaking focus on the old moment, and how unblinking can be used to achieve states of high concentration on one element, and I believe this is what happened here, except that the moment as defined by my vision came to
    Encapsulate the entirety of
My experience, a pure focus on the entirety of now as it relates to me, and I was able to hold this state as unmoving seemingly without end. What was amazing is that I was aware of thought and the cognising of my experience, but I was also aware that this too was occurring completely independently of the experience itself and that ‘I’ WAS the experience…!
I completely didn’t mean to do this, and as somebody who has been exploring mediation as a formal practice number of years, this is by far the most intensely clear experience I have ever had in transcending my thinking and calculating mind and I wondered if this was indeed the basis of a specific practice I had not encountered - and here i am
    Proven right!
Now that I know this, I fully expect to not reach this state again by any intentional means for a long time - isn’t that the way it always goes! I will probably have to set about forgetting the whole thing and my attachments to the experience before I can relax enough to bring about the same state free of Expectation again, but I am so glad to have found an explanation for what I experienced!

Its true. Ive had an almost the exact same experience and completely by accident. I had never heard of trataka, but when one LSD party went awry, I got fed up with constant effort to control the situation. Instead of offering more weed, different music, and every kind of distraction we could think of to help a friend reacting wildly , I decided to sit there with my eyes open and embrace whatever was to come.
Very quickly, my trip started to unfurl, and shapes and colors started moving and dancing before my eyes. I continued my gaze, unblinking. My friends around me tried to talk to me, but i did not reply. They all thought I had lost it just like the other guy. I sat like this for maybe 2 hours, and over the course my visuals became stunningly still, and every single object was absolutely radiant.
The first friend who had "lost it" also seemed to notice what was really going on. In an uncanny way, he was able to bring himself out of his panic by realizing the power of non-reactivity.
I saw all the pitfalls in logic and ego as everyone tried to make sense of the situation, and was simply able to observe. It felt as if I was being shown a message from a source beyond myself, and the more I let go and simply watched, the more abundantly clear everything became. I truly felt enlightened.
When I first began, I told my friend, "what if we just sit here". But by the end I was so blissed out by the radiance of everything, I was resting on my back as if floating on the ocean.
When a friend saw fit to place a pillow under my head, it was at that moment I finally felt compelled to speak again. I humorously stated, "I feel like a Prince!"
My friend who was originally having a rough go at it immediately opened up with an incredibly existential question, "Are you alive or dead?" But without any thought, doubt or hesitation, I replied " It doesnt matter." He simply smiled and nodded approvingly.
The parallels between your experience and mine are uncanny. 10 years later almost, and Im still trying to work on it....

From my own experience I may say that the sight gets blurry and not of colour or geometrical organisation.
I have been doing this since always.
      Last years spiritual process oriented.
It is not the mind which comes in place here.
You have explained with many words of the intellectual realm and the experience beyond the mind doesn't have many words. Because it doesn't come from the realm of words.
I had experienced also what you talk about but it is just playing with the sensory system.
It is quite a thing if you have never experienced before, but it is not the real stuff they talk here.
We can not rely on drugs to have inner experiences. Because it will come once and then it won't happen again the way it should. I would not recommend this at all.
It may be,😂 my eyes doesn't see properly that I got this facility to do this.
Anyway I don't trust them when it comes to inner experiences.
This is something I do very often as part of who I am. Not because any sadhana or practice.
When I meant to be out this.... I would not know what time it is.... Sometimes there are 2 hours , sometimes 4 hours passing by.
It is very nice to experience, but I would never feel like something to be proud of ... Mostly because it doesn't let me operate without myself.
People who live with me they happen to come for lunch and I am stuck this way.
Or I have to take care of the 3 dogs we have and I give them food hours after their time to eat.
So, what it is a bon for spiritual process, it is a curse if you live with people who operate into society.
If you don't repeat and do experiments with this. You will never know if it is a true inner experience or just the mind playing havoc with you.
And trust me, the mind would play of not mind with you.
Mine, it is not the quitest ones but if it gets too noisy, I just don't pay attention to it.
I do see mathematics and geometry in my normal day to day.
My mind wants to resolve everything at onces. Hahahaha. Like if there were any problems out there.... Just mere situations to manage as they come.... Anyway they will go also.
      Nice to read people sharing.
Thank you for your time here. ❤❤🙏🏽🙇🏽‍♀️🙇🏽‍♀️🙇🏽‍♀️🎉

Please make video on "chitta", the conscious mind, the universal intelligence that is not just the witness, but actively creates, sustains and destroys the universe at every moment.. and also clearly define how this chitta is different from the "no mind zone".

    • @nc01sadh
      @nc01sadh 23 дня назад +9

Chitta is subconscious mind. All the data you have gathered from your previous life and this life via the 5 senses. Yogi is trying to cleanse the chitta( subconscious mind). In other words delete the files stored in there, and experience the ultimate reality and truth.

    • @sidhantsharma9961
      @sidhantsharma9961 23 дня назад +10

Where did you find that definition of Chitta? Can you please provide references?
According to my research, Chitta is the fundamental base of human psychological framework, yoga sutras call this Antahkarana. The entire goal or Yoga is to remove the deformities and illusions that cover the chitta. Atman is the window to Brahman, whereas chitta is the aspect of Purusha that is covered by Prakriti.
Are you maybe talking about "Chit"? As in from Sat/Chit/Ananda?
If so, then both the states of no-mind & Chit are the same.
The state is usually called no-mind (Hinduism) as there's no objectivity, just awareness.
      It's different in Buddhism though.

It warms my heart to see such a question asked and for people to be explaining it to him.
I’ll give you the best piece of information on Chita you’ve ever had in your life.
If you’re truly interested in “chitta”, turn your awareness inward for that answer. If someone gives you the answer, you will NEVER know it. Any answer that anyone will give you, will only push you further from the truth.
If you want to never know what “chitta” is, keep asking questions and keep listening to other people push you further from it……

@@sidhantsharma9961 its nice to talk to you again.
I cannot give you any particular reference for the chitta definition. I agree with the definition of antahkaran, and the aspect of purush that is covered by prakriti. My question was entirely focused on the grey zone where purush and prakriti overlaps and creation happens, and not on how to experience the no mind zone. Being the witness is a easy task, but being the creator needs more dexterity. I am very eager to explore how prakriti creates when it comes in touch of purush. If consciousness is just a witness, then whose will power drives the intelligence to create?
Also can you please explain how Buddhism sees "no mind"? Because in many aspects I found Buddhism more realistic and relatable than advaita.

you dont even need yoga. if you can practice clearing your mind by just sitting anywhere and close your mind from outside surroundings, YOU ARE DOING YOGA but in an informal way. If you can concentrate without any thought in your mind, that monkey mind thinking about things if you can calm it down, YOU ARE DOING YOGA.

    • @nc01sadh
      @nc01sadh 16 дней назад +1

@adnsncorner: sitting in Asana has benefits. It helps with the energy flow and waking of the kundalini shakti that resides in the muladhara chakra( root chakra). Chakras are the junction for meeting points of all the subtle nerve channels. chakras get activated during the asanas. This is an actual science and not mumbo jumbo. Yes you can be in yoga when you single focus and concentration at a stretch at any given time. But you can combine both and accelerate the process. Call it riding the elevator rather than taking the stairs to the top floor.

You exist as an aspect of the all eternal one mind whether you meditate upon this eternal reality or not. Your attempt to control your mind really is nothing more than you focusing your awareness upon something-but that something you are focusing upon is also an aspect of the all eternal one mind. Mind is not a process per se more so than is it field of potentialities. You as consciousness can choose to ignore this all-pervasive substrate underpinning physical and spiritual reality-but you cannot ignore the fact that your very presence as a soul/spirit and the current physical reality/world that you believe you gain life-giving sustenance from is also an aspect of the all eternal one mind expressed through never-ending particle and wave fluctuation states in an endless symphony of radiating and compressed forms in a most beautiful universal ballet of eternal motion.

To understand... reality is not a state nor an experience.. reality is no-thing.
If you try to focus or concentrate you are still in the realm of thingness, you still have a goal, an object.
This can appear to be useful as a step or stage, but in the end it is as useless as carrying a raft after you cross a river.
In the ultimate sense it's not about the object of mind but the mode of mind.
The more I try to be something or attain something the further away from reality I stray. "I" am nothing.
When you finally realize your "no-thing-ness" you will know the one thing that is reality.
It is limitless, undefinable and is everpresent through all forms of appearance - which are illusory, mental constructs.
To understand, you are nothing. And because you are nothing you have nothing to fear.

      Who am I?
      Where is this writing?
      Where is this youtube?
All of that, and what you said, is simply ideas, thoughts, memory.
      Are these "things?"
      Are they "something?"
When you look for "you" what is that "you?"
When you look for the independence of anything, a self existing or inherent "thingness" that is the core "reality" of any thing, any being, any event, what do you find?
      Emptiness, voidness, nothingness.
Now if you try to describe that you end up back in a context of "some-thing-ness" and somethingness is a mental construct.
Where are the events, the things, the "beings" from just 5 minutes ago? They do not exist. They are images in a mind that is made of nothing but imaginings. And this mind creates the sense of past, present and future - as "time" is also illusory.
And so at the center of each thing, of EVERYthing and every being is an eternal timeless infinity. At the center of EVERY "thing" there is only the boundless presence of no-thing-ness.
But we cannot fathom that nothingness, it's too still and pure for us. And so we create things, we create beings, we create causes and effects, we create time, we create Gods and we create ourselves.
Until you realize that you are NOTHING you will always have doubts, always create ideas and egos because you believe nothing is a **thing** you call "nothing." But that "nothing" is not genuine or thorough (all encompassing).
Nothing is everything - minus the "thing." All things are nothing.
      Relax the body, relax.
Allow thought and feelings to arise and fall away, allow.
There is nothing, and there is nothing to fear or to be.
When the mind is stilled and centered in silence, in nothingness, you are free.

      Nice speech. 🙏🏽🙇🏽‍♀️♥️
Now, you didn't give even a single approach to experience this nothingness. Because it is something, just not of the physical realm.
Not way to be measured , not way to be trap into the physical technology as modern science is operating nowadays.
Thing or not thing... Todo es nada y nada es todo. English is very poor to describe inner States.
Who said the opposite of nothing?
The source is ever be , empty as emptyness is.
When you are here, in this human mechanism, is something.
Without something gross as the physical body and the mind... You wouldn't be able to realise our true nature. The source of creation, Creator itself.
So, I don't buy your philosophical speech to no-thing Ness .
If there is a way you clarify yourself by interacting out here. Then I buy whatever you want to sell.
There is not separate state of nothing and something. Both coexist and complement eachother for existence to happen.
Something is gross, nothing or the source is at the very core and present in every single piece of creation.
I am, am I. Who knows who I am?
      I know what I am
      I don't know about I
Because to me is not of exclusion the process. It is of taking everything and nothing as part of me. So, I not am one.
What we see, what we perceive is just a reflection of the mind.
When you get in touch with that which is not. I disappears.
There is not breath, there is not heart, there is not time or space. There is not you, not me , not I , not identity, but there is something there. There is a presence which is the very basics of creation and all that it is and that what it is not.
That state you can't behold as I live on nothingness and this is the only way. Because it is not.
Existence is a very complex unfolding of the one who is not but the source.
      So, what are you saying?
Clarifying yourself, as ai do when I use this media or you are telling me something you grasp by your intellectual process without the experience of being there of being that which is not.?
      I don't know anything, I know nothing.
This is my bon and my curse.
But if one has to touch this dimension as I did.... It must have an overflowing inclusive love in their heart.... Almost madness, but a sharp and clear intellect, to discern what is and what is not the lap of truth in which we exist.
I agree with your words in the way. They have been said for millennials, I don't agree with knowledge.... Just when knowing comes from within and one has experienced it as part of their being.
If you want to say something else.... Go ahead. I may mis interpretate you and may I be wrong in what you tried to communicate.
Whatever is the creator and it's creation.... I am ok.
I may sound rude or arrogant but it is not the mean here. Just I don't know what social conveniences are.
      😅😅😂😂😂
Now, I go to take out my dogs and get them resolved so they don't want to fight eachother in a physical dominance and supremacy.
There I am very authoritarian, because life, life itself always comes first. Because there is not my life and your life. There is life, life and life.
      Take care. ❤🙏🏽🙇🏽‍♀️🙇🏽‍♀️😘😘😘

Don't say ever again we create time. First there is not we. But leaving this aside.
Kaali, kaala, is time and space, both are coexisting in kaala.
      Kaali actually.
We have nothing to do with time. Just to make use of the time we spend in Human form to create a wonderful experience within and give this wonderful Ness to other lifes.
The eyes are the ones holding the net of ilusory space. The eyes are the ones which are the means of space and distance. Once you see the involving passage... You know.
But you can remain the same fool as you were. Hahaha
I am talking to me. Not ever I will call you fool.
We create nothing. As individual entities.
All is a play of the Divine and better to know the tune , so you can dance with it and don't get crushed by situations.....
Or you can become the dance itself....
Anyway, if anyone can't dance it won't be able to touch the Divine... As all devas must dance to be 😂😂😂😂😂.
I would invite you to chant and dance with me as I walk the landscape I live in.
From there, if you can hold the joy for a substantial period of time.... "Things" would happen to you .
You may be overwhelmed by existence itself so the creator dances.
I don't have enough information to bring that experience to you from here. But I will make use of my imagination to get you a nice joyful walk along my side. 😅😅❤❤❤❤
      Take care 😘😘😘 🙏🏽🙇🏽‍♀️♥️
You are a part of me. I embrace you within myself.

So, could this be some practice that was taken from ancient yoga? It surely created visionary experiences!

Did this practice in early life noticed ectoplasmic waves emanating from my fingers / looked like smoke- it frightened me- so I stopped.Later did this and visualized chackras with bijas-and seed syllables in Sanskrit lettering- colors ect. Then visualized Solar deity Varichcaina and 4 other Dhyani Buddhas-this was no joke and it changed me though I could not sustain practice having no Guru to explain and assist in a sustainable practice.Still feel as if I am being guided by a Tibetan Vajrayana of German Origen despite my inability to stay on the path.Too many coincidences and weird events have occurred to deny spiritual guidance as answers always appear when needed concerning the big supernormal experiences.

@@greaterbharat4175 it is not. Here's why: truth is one always (unique), immutable and eternal. Truth is God. No practice that doesn't lead to god is an "individual way with union with the supreme". That's a lie. The lie is the devil. Proof: because there is only one way, there can't be "individual ways". That's why Jesus Christ said I am the way, the truth and the life. That is also why there is only one god in history who both claimed, and spoke the truth for being truth incarnate, god. Only in truth you become immortal, because truth is eternal. Furthermore because the "supreme" is infinite, it is impossible for any finite being to unite with infinity. Furthermore, there is such thing as ancient knowledge, which is full of garbage you have to sift to find, which is dangerous because you can get lost in it. Truth is revealed nowadays, yoga is not the way. The way is to judge everything, and choose the truth
