I have been using Goodreads for quite a few years now, probably over a decade, and so I've built up a decent amount of "read" books on there. I was intrigued to see which books were the "best" and the "worst", according to their Goodreads average rating, and whether I agreed with them.

I love videos like this❤
My best rated was 4.76 for Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson.
Worst rated...The Fixed Period by Anthony Trollope at 3.06.
I agree with the Trollope book and if I HAD to go with JUST a Sanderson book, then yes I agree. But there are a few down the list (2nd and 4th place) that I would agree with more. Lol
What are the books in second and fourth place? I'm curious!
4.76 is a very high average rating! It’s interesting that you agreed with the lowest rated one! I find it so fascinating to see where our favourite books end up in other peoples’ ratings!
@@SheepandOak The Bible is 2nd with 4.72 and 4th is Assassin's Fate by Robin Hobb at 4.65.
Such a fun video! 😊👌🏻
Top rated: know my name by Chanel Miller at 4.71 - I don’t usually rate non fiction books, but I definitely agree with the average rating. I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by the author. It was a difficult read, but an important one. The topic is quite dark, but I think they’re a lot to learn from this story as is it showcases a variety of issues with the legal system in the US regarding sexual assault cases. I think the issues the author brought up, in many aspects, is relevant regardless of where you live. This book was written in a very thoughtful way, and the way she showed that changes can be made gives me hope for the future. I do recommend this book, and especially the audiobook.
Lowest rated: The queen’s promise by norwegian author Margit Walsø at 3.25. There is only 12 ratings though. This is a historical fiction about Marie Antoinette. I read this book about 10 years ago, when I didn’t use Goodreads. From what I remember I did like the book, and would probably have rated it between 3 and 4 stars - so I thought it was a bit better than the average rating indicates.
Thank you! ☺️✨
It sounds like you had fairly similar ratings to the average ones then! I find it so interesting to see what others think about the books we love most!
I agree, I’ve really enjoy watching this types of video. 😄 As you mentioned in your discussion, I also find it interesting that the ones that is highest and lowest rated is neither my favorite or worst read.
Looking through my Goodreads, I do in general agree with the average rating, but the ones I don’t, they’ve got a pretty high rating. The book with their second highest average ratings is Kingdom of Ash by SJM at 4.66. I enjoyed the series, but the last book I thought was just ok. I also enjoyed the first book of His dark materials, but didn’t care for the last one at all.
Top rated: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows (4.62 average, 5 star personal rating)
Definitely not my favorite book ever but it’s hard to argue with Harry Potter
Worst rated: Useless Miracle by Barry Schechter (2.8 average, 2 star personal rating)
This book has a super interesting premise and then just refused to make any interesting points in the resulting narrative. They had a nice ending in sight and then just hurdled over what could have made for an interesting end to give us one of the most bizarre ends to a book I’ve certainly ever read
It sounds like your ratings fit with the average ratings fairly closely then!
Top rated on my read list:
- Spy x Family Volume 2 (4.56); my rating: 5 stars
- Lonesome Dove (4.52); my rating: 5 stars
I absolutely love the Spy x Family series, and Volume 2 made me feel so many wonderful emotions. And I would consider Lonesome Dove one of my top 5 books of all time - so yes, I agree!
Lowest rated on my read list:
- Seventeenth Summer (3.11); my rating: 4 stars
- Castle of Otranto (3.18); my rating: 5 stars
Seventeenth Summer was very good, in my opinion! I thought it was atmospheric and felt like growing up. It's a coming of age story about a teenage girl's summer in the 1940s, and it is credited by many as the first ever young-adult novel. I'm confused by the super-low rating on this one... I've read FAR worse books!
The Castle of Otranto is one of my absolute favorite books, so I do not agree! I'd put it in my top 20. It was hilarious, fast-paced, and far easier to read than I expected. It is credited as the first gothic novel. Hmmmm... I'm noticing a pattern here!!
"'This book was beyond words - although I shall try: beautiful, seductive, passionate, intense, gorgeous, phenomenal. . . I beamed, giggled, blushed, shouted out loud and even cried.' I mean, that's quite a response to have whilst reading a book." I about died laughing when you said this 🤣
It’s interesting that your highest rated ones were both 5 star reads for you too!
Haha, it’s so funny reading back on some of my book reviews from years ago 😂🫣
Ohhh Lonesome Dove!! I loved that book!!
Best: Saga, Book 3 (veautiful hardback collection of 3 volumes) - comic books, specially their neat collections tend to get suuuuper inflated ratings, so unsurprised. I think Saga is pretty good btw, not my favorite comic though.
Worst: A Slovenian novel I read because I participated in the making of its TV series adaptation, partly has a low rating because of my contribution. I think our crew did a better job ha.
