    I often feel that SMG's performance as the BuffyBot is overlooked in the episode - the transition is seamless and she makes me feel like they built an SMGbot to "play" the BuffyBot
    Also that scene where Giles is mourning/reminiscing
    Joyce
    changed the way i listened to "Tales of Brave Ulysses"

    Something that didn’t occur to me until after a possibly unhealthy number of rewatches: The setup for the vision quest was that Buffy felt she was losing the ability to feel (put another way, that she losing a bit of her humanity). The fact that the gang couldn’t tell Buffy from a robot even after (as y’all rightly pointed out) they clocked the other robot right away has got to sting.

    • @johnmoreland6089
      @johnmoreland6089 15 дней назад +1

      Truthfully, though, they didn't clock April as a robot until after she exhibited exta-human strength by throwing Spike through the window.

      A good point which, frankly, hadn’t occurred to me. However, in a somewhat uncharacteristic use of thinking it over before I post, I’ve decided to stick with my conclusion for a few reasons: first, it’s never explicitly stated when the Scoobies figured out April; might have been her intonations, might’ve been Spikes flight onto the street, or both. Second, and of more importance, I don’t think it matters when they knew about April. The point is they did, and knowing that, they should know how a robot (one of Warren’s robots anyway) acts/speaks/etc. Finally, even if one discounts all that, there’s this: I don’t think it actually matters what the gang knew/thought about Robot Buffy; what matters is what Buffy /thinks/ they know. Given her state of mind, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for her to jump….erm. “take a small step” and find conclusions there. :)

    7:08 “Spells backfire.” - Willow
    “That’s not the point.” - Tara
    It’s very telling of Willow’s developing character that the only reason she doesn’t resort to magic to change the situation are the _logistics and practicality given her current power level_ rather than the ethical and moral question to which Tara intuitively speaks to.
    Willow’s always been a control freak and resorted to magic to fix reality to her personal wants and desires. Even on other people without their knowledge or consent. Like when she tried to enchant Xander with a de-lusting spell, or to curse Oz after finding about his infidelity or the entirety of the _Something blue_ episode, to name a few examples.
    This is one of the more clear-cut examples of when Willow and her unethical use of magic is put on display. She’s limited by her ability and success probability. Not her conscience.
    It’s very subtle and softly delivered, but sums up in a nutshell Willow’s dangerously blasé attitude with magic.
    Edit: And I couldn’t help but get the feeling that Willow’s deeply incorrect decision to provide Dawn with the book was done moreso for Willow to perform the spell vicariously through Dawn rather than to selflessly give Dawn what she requires to achieve her catharsis. Am I alone in feeling that? What do you guys think?
    Again, Willow is selfish and reckless with magic.

    • @afry6400
      @afry6400 17 дней назад +2

      To your edit, I think it's more Willow feeling for Dawn and wanting to give her a sense of control over her own life without really thinking about the consequences. I'm not sure if she even knew if Dawn could pull it off especially the way she reacted when Tara reacted as she did about the book being gone.

    Forever is the reason I'm so adamant about people watching Buffy 5/Angel 2 in order. At this point in Angel's journey, he just got done being the worst person ever, ignoring the small stuff to fight his big war. But if nothing he does matters, all that matters is what he does. The little things ARE the big things. Like showing up to comfort a friend, over something neither of them has the power to change. If Joyce had died a week earlier, no chance that happens.

      @JuneJaneb4 18 дней назад +5

      What they did here by throwing characters back and forth between 2 series was just an example of a promotion strategy to get people to keep watching both shows. The producers idea. And what you write here is an example of how this tactics works among people. When they not only insist on watching two projects, but even push a certain sequence of doing so. In other words, the strategy worked. They launched a new project (angel show) without much fear that it would fail and essentially made money on one idea and same people twice. 💸💸

      @@Tran809 what is written on the top is from a fan's point of view, they talk about characters. And what I have written is about how it worked for these two series from the production team point of view. And all I learned from that was about how you can influence some people. And you can see it here. So for me it was like watching an experiment. I was only watching people, since it didn't affect me, didn't make me watch the second show.
      There are three roles here, the subject of the strategy (the production team), the object (the fan) and the observer, who does not fall under either one or the second role, but make conclusions.

    "Who whating how with huh?" My favorite line. I love that Buffy and Giles have a shared dark humor with the "It takes longer than a week to bleach bones". It was a refreshing change of pace from the very sad couple episodes prior then to have so much comedy with Glory and Spike reading each other. Spike having the BuffyBot made and using it like he did goes to show how he cares for Buffy but without a soul he can't have that boundary and deal with the rejection.

  • @williambowman2326

    First, both of you did a great job making it through The Body and then Forever. You were not alone when you became emotional after seeing Angel at the grave with Buffy. The 3 college girls that watched this with me all cried… after all promised each other no crying.
    You are mistaken about waiting a week. The sadistic WB network waited over a month to show Forever after The Body. That was the longest month and the wait made Forever have even more weight to the entire episode. You both deserve applause for keeping focus. Much better than how we handled the show.
    Intervention was needed and appreciated after the previous weeks of torture. We howled with laughter every time we saw Buffybot. The smile, the too much makeup, and the bubbly attitude just made us laugh and be happy finally. It was a great way to get back into the show. The great joke about Bob Barker is that of course Spike would be a fan. He can’t go out in the daytime so he watches soap operas and game shows. Just the image of that coupled with his conversation about Passions with Joyce always made us smile.

  • @Samaelthekind
    @Samaelthekind 17 дней назад +15

    Here we just saw an episode that illustrates exactly what I referenced about Spike. He IS a demon walking around in a man's body...its best never to forget that. His first impulses are evil...BUT, and this is a big BUT...his original personality possesses an INTENSITY so overwhelming...that its actually still a powerful component of his current personality. This is not generally ever true of vampires. As some mentioned before, even the Judge noticed the residual humanity in him. He has wants and desires beyond just food and safety. He is more a part of the world...more able to form bonds, more able to show loyalty, and not just because of the chip. Angelus is devoid of anything except Liam's residual artistic talent and love of excess...which transforms into a brutal bloodlust and a sense of artistry in his pursuit of causing suffering and pain. Beyond that, nothing human that was decent remains. Spike...is a unique case, where its almost as if the arrival of the demon freed the man that William wanted to be all along....passionate, wild, fierce and always ready to explode...and even the demon couldn't erase all that.

    Forever kinda hurts me a little more than The Body. The Body is still an astounding episode, but emotionally Forever just gets to me more because it covers the tragic part of "what now?". Having to try to continue on when the shock of loss dies down, and have to go on without this person. That's what gets to me.

  • @thehannahroboto
    @thehannahroboto 18 дней назад +47

    I think Spike's actions are even more meaningful when you take into account the context that he is an "evil" soulless vampire. Can you imagine Angelus doing such things? Never. He is able to have a shred of humanity, of having genuine love and good intentions in spite of not having a soul. Angelus would be plotting with Glory by now. I'm not trying to say one is better than the other but it's something to keep in mind. Spike is just truly a unique and one of a kind vampire.

      I think the Angelus is the unique vampire in that he has absolutely no humanity in him whatsoever, whereas all vampires retain an echo of their humanity to serve as a template for their vampire self. And Spike is especially more “human” than most vampires.

      @williambowman2326 18 дней назад +6

      Recall that The Judge felt some humanity in Spike but none in Angelus. Also Angel told us that some personality aspects of when we are human came to the forefront when becoming a Vampire.( Season 3, Dopplegangland ) We saw Spike as an immature romantic before turning. His idea of love was messed up by Drusilla when she confused his idea of love with violence, lust, and domination.

    I probably mentioned, long before, that when they showed Buffy on TV in the country where I lived, they only purchased rights for two seasons, so I'd been certain, for years, that “Becoming” is the series finale.
    When they showed Buffy the second time, they've bought five seasons. And they gave them a different translation. In particular, for all five seasons, they called Giles “Guy-less”. The only time when they switched back to correct pronunciation, was this episode.
    Remember when Aly Hannigan played four roles - normal Willow, vamp Willow, normal Willow playing vamp Willow, vamp Willow playing normal Willow? Doppelgängland? Well, SMG got to play three - Buffy, Buffybot, and Buffy playing Buffybot.
    Glory said she's sharing a body with the enemy; she didn't say “brother”.

    Coffin shopping 😭 The process of planning an unexpected funeral has to be so overwhelming. Aww Spike bringing flowers for Joyce 💚 The camerawork showing the emptiness of the home & funeral scene was done beautifully. Angel showing up for Buffy 🖤 Tara & Willow trying to comfort Dawn. Anya’s talk about life was adorable! Not Dawn wanting to mess with necromancy. The Angel/Buffy cemetery scene warmed my heart. Hold it together Ben! Don’t spill the tea on Dawn. Of course Dawn is gonna try snooping through the spells when Willow/Tara leave 🤦🏽‍♀️ Not Willow giving her the book 😳 Anya being threatened by Dawn wanting to help in the magic shop 😂 Dawn stealing the books & trying to resurrect Joyce…with Spike’s help. Glory & Jinx scene was hilarious. Stealing an egg from a demon near the hell mouth…sounds perfectly safe. That guy was nice but kinda creepy. That whole egg snatching scene tho. The spell 😳 Willow keeping a journal. Her & Tara 💚 Willow lying about the book so badly it was adorable 😂 Oof the sisters arguing 😭 Buffy’s breakdown 💔 Dawn ripping the picture. Yay more tears. Gosh the last few episodes have been so emotionally draining. Hoping this brings Dawn & Buffy closer. Glad we didn’t have to see a zombie Joyce. Loved the Angel cameo to provide her some comfort. Spike helping Dawn figure things out for herself, treating her not as a kid but looking out for her along the way was nice to see.
    Poor Buffy can never catch a break 😭 A slayer quest? Dawn being understanding 💚 Not the Buffybot! Spike needs to be stopped 🤦🏽‍♀️ Glory is an exiled God? And it’s clearly a weak point of hers 🤔 Buffy/Giles in the desert. The Hokey Pokey 😂 The uncomfortableness of watching Spike & Robo Buffy tho 🙈 Cringe overload. Dawn stealing? Not the followers stalking Willow. Buffybot going out for patrol! 😳 Xander & Anya running into Spike & Buffybot. I wonder if the minions are gonna think Spike is the key since they haven’t seen him around the gang. Them seeing Spike & “her” in the cemetery 💀 Them kidnapping Spike! Buffy’s convo with the guide was insightful. The Willow & Buffybot convo. “Buffy…yes that’s me” 😂 Love them trusting Tara to watch over Dawn while they go after Spike. Glory reading Spike’s hair. Glory throwing him around like a rag doll! Buffy showing up with the group with Buffybot in the house! 😳 Them trying to give her an intervention 😂 Her being mad they couldn’t tell her apart from the robot. Glory torturing Spike! Buffybot calling him Guy-les 💀 Not Spike trying to throw Bob Barker under the bus to Glory & the minions wanting to bring her the limp & beaten body of his 😂💀 Spike reading Glory! Spike’s escape attempt. The team’s lobby brawl 🔥 Willow dissecting Buffybot. Spike was WRECKED! I knew it was real Buffy. But the kiss & the acknowledgement from the real Buffy tho! 🖤 This episode was wild. Spike was creepy with the robot. However, I appreciate him protecting Dawn. I like seeing his character arc & him feeling like he wants to do good. And also Buffy’s journey to finding her self & balance being a slayer while not sacrificing her ability to love & be loved. The “death is your gift” was an interesting answer from the guide. Curious to see how the rest of the season concludes. It’s been a wild ride this season. Amazing reactions as always guys! 🖤

    glad one of u (Sergio this time) noticed the music connection to joyce when they had the band candy and we saw some of Giles records which in another episode, Oz i think comfirmed was a great collection. ( though anyone who likes Cream White Room, Tales of Brave Ulysses type music has to have the classics)
    Intervention is one of my fav episodes of the season (Robot Buffy is so funny, I love the way Sarah played her) (40:23 still brings a tear to my eye buffy noticing spikes trust with her, joyce and dawn was real)

    5x17 -- Kudos for recognizing Joel Grey. I knew him from his iconic portrayal of the Master of Ceremonies in the 1972 Bob Fosse film of "Cabaret" (a role he had originated on Broadway). And he would pop up occasionally on film and TV in the 80s. I never got to see him play the Wizard. So I was excited to see him show up in Buffy.

    After the fallout from Joyce's death you can feel the pain of Dawn in Forever where she just can't accept her mother's death, and would do anything to being her back. This of course is a very basic human emotion experienced by many. You can see how Tara is annoyed with Willow for lending some assistance. Tara becomes very wary of Willow's increasing power, a perception here re the Willow/Tara power shift, and the tensions increasing with them. Another good point raised is the anxiety and pressure of having to deal with arranging funeral, wake, catering, etc even the admin involved after death in having to contact banks, pension companies, solicitors, etc etc etc it is really draining. Some terrific scenes with Dawn and Buffy at the end you can almost feel the anguish for the two of them. Brilliantly acted, again how this show did not receive awards is crazy, it should definitely be retrospectively recognised and awarded at the Emmys in the future for its contribution to TV drama. We know this show can be very light hearted with great comedy moments, but when it hits hard it really hits. This is what makes the Buffyverse shows so brilliant they cover every type of human emotion so well. On reflection I think you will watch all the episodes again and will appreciate them even more.

    Happy "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" Thursday evening with Sergio & Cody! 😊
    I hope that you both had a wonderful Christmas yesterday. 🎄
    Two of my favorite season 5 episodes for this evening.
    Episode 5x17: Continuing with emotional rollercoaster of Joyce's passing. It's now time for her funeral. And Angel makes a surprise visit to Sunnydale to support Buffy. And Dawn enlists Spike's help to resurrect Joyce.
    Episode 5x18: While the real Buffy is away on a vision quest, the Scoobies mistakes Spike's Buffybot for the real one. Glory kidnaps Spike in order to get information on the Key.
    Getting closer to the end of season 5 already. Then it's onto season 6.
    Looking forward to next week's episode reactions. 😊

    So enjoying this Buffy/Angel rewatch with you guys!! For crossover Horror/Musical I highly recommend Repo : the Genetic Opera (Tony Head [Giles] is main cast, & Sarah Brightman!). I think you'd love it!! I was an Angel/Firefly watcher in real time (FF tattoos and all), but dismissed Buffy as "teen BS" until later! As much as Whedon has turned out to be a predatory misogynist, the teams around his shows are undeniably great; & the actors are all 😘!!

    That kiss scene is one of my favorites. Also, considering Spike is a soulless vampire in love with someone that has made it Very clear that she doesn't love him back and barely tolerates his presence, I don't judge him too harshly for the Buffybot. In a way, it's like he doesn't want to bother Real Buffy with his needs/yearning. I'm sure he was still planning to show up if she needs him, still wants to be around her cuz Buffybot is clearly not the greatest substitute for the real thing. He's in love with real Buffy, not the robot. The robot is advanced masteurbation. I mean, at least in this instance he's not Using/hurting(?) Harmony (or anyone else) by making her act as substitute. Look how unhingedly evil Angel is when he's a vampire & compare it to Spike. I love Anya, but even she had to become human to even Start on her journey to being non-bad. For being inherently evil, he's amazingly well behaved, imho.😅😅😅🤷‍♀️

    Forever is an episode that I sometimes try to avoid, as that "what happens after someone dies" kind of feeling is something I don't really like thinking about, but Intervention is a crazy episode in every sense. It's still somewhat dark, but it has a few funny moments that were much needed at this point of the season. But we're in the endgame now. Things get more intense after this.

    28:43 OK I'm going to stretch my biologist legs for a change. The desert can be very cold, especially in areas like certain places in California that have very low moisture. Which honestly is one reason that I used to want to live in California. (I say "used to," because now it is a wasteland of corruption and horror.😣) The desert can be very hot during the day and very cool at other parts of the day because it has no moisture to hold onto the heat like places with humidity do. So anyway that's probably the reason for the coats: it's still early in the day. Hey I love you guys. Just wanted to make sure I told you that. 😉😉

    Forever is such a great episode. It was a tall order following The Body, but I think it was successful. A lot of people hate on Dawn (just in general), but I've never been on the Dawn hate train. Maybe that's because I was a kid myself when I first watched the show, but I think her actions and behavior are completely understandable. Is she annoying and immature most of the time? Yes, but shes liie 13/14. I know I was annoying and immature at that age. It's worse at the beginning of the season, because she was originally envisioned as like a 10 year old, but it gets better after the writers adjust to her being a bit older as the season progresses. Anyways, she shows incredible maturity at the end of the episode when she rips up Joyce's photo to reverse the spell, after realizing how vulnerable snd broken Buffy is.
    Intervention is also a great episode. Its super funny, but the ending gets me teary-eyed everytime.

    Well done on noticing Giles was listening to the song him and Joyce listened to in Band Candy, always a gut punch of a scene with ASH's perfect acting.
    Jane Espenson wrote the Buffy Bot episode perfectly (remember that name she writes the majority of the best Spike episodes), Spike takes Buffy's body automony away then has his own taken by Glory, this is especially highlighted by Glory having him tied and held down on the bed before she then penetrates him, instant karma. THEN he redeems everything by probably being the only Vampire ever to sacrifice his life for another. If it was any other writer (*cough* Joss *cough*) I feel like it could be a lot more gross of an episode.

    1. This wasn't gonna be the first point, but something you guys said made me think... do we think there's some kind of connection between Ben and Glory?
    2. Yeah, Dawn did try to use magic as a "fix it," didn't she? And indeed, it's VERY interesting how Willow was the first one to aide her and guide her down the road to actual success. Willow, who has used magic to attempt to fix things that are wrong in her life in the past.
    3. Yeah, the Buffybot stuff is weird. But I'm able to look past it by focusing on how FUN this had to be to film for Sarah Michelle Geller. Not to mention the hilarity that ensues from this.

  • @killianlpc

    The Buffybot in Intervention lends for some great comedy moments, but the serious side is Spike's obsession with Buffy reaching crazy and dangerous levels. Interesting that Spike did not tell Glory who the Key was, even though he is soulless he seems to be changing, his feelings seem genuine, of course because of the chip he cannot attack humans, but nevertheless things seems very different. The kiss from Buffy is so telling for future episodes. A pivotal moment in the show.

    I love Xander more than a lot of the fandom, but I hate that he chased Spike away from the house. Spike and Joyce’s relationship was so oddly wholesome. And Spike perfering Glory kill him than rat Dawn out and hurt Buffy is so goooood. And can personally confirm that Xander praising Spike’s qualities was a VERY good moment for the fandom.
