Loch Shiel Circuit: Multi-Day Wild Camping & Canoeing Adventure!

  • We experienced a amazing 4 day canoe adventure this week. Fighting harsh weather, massive Loch's, river rapids and even a sea crossing to complete the Loch Sheil Circuit. This brand new charity challenge with some old faces you will recognise as well as new ones too took us back up to Scotland this time to the west coast. The adventure takes you through some of the most stunning and most remote areas of this beautiful country you would ever see.
The first nights camp was on the shores of Loch Sheil, encapsulated by wonderful mountains we relaxed and got ourselvess ready for what was to come!
The ssecond day started with good weather but quickly turned into a hard paddle against raging wind and rain. Cold and tired, the team pushed on down the loch to complete it but then came the River Sheil and it's infamous rapid at the bottom where at the wrong time of day could spell a capsize for sure as you have to drop off a ledge leading into Loch Moidart the tidal Loch.
The team unfortunately got separated and we had to spend the night at two different locations. Feeling the pain of the day we set up camp at the mouth of the Loch and began to gather our strength back. Warm food and dry cloths we spent a lovely night eating and drinking hot food and drinks.
Day 3 started well, packing up we met the rest of the team at Castle Tioram a thirteenth/ Fourteenth century structure on the tidal island of Eilean Tioram. After exploring the island it was time to move on and hopefully reach our 3rd camp at the opening North Atlantic.
With bad weather and a incoming tide this made it very hard work making our way up to the end of the Loch and took us many attemps at trying to reach a suitable spot for the evening and ready to make the push into open sea come morning.
unfortunately again the team got split up and we had to camp our last night seperated once more. The camp spot was stunning, situated in a little cove that had fresh water to top up our much needed depleting supplies. It even had a beautiful sandy beach lagoon a short paddle away where we took the opportunity to have a swim and freshen up!
Matty and his brother Jay cook up an amazing last meal for us of Chilli and rice and even a pudding which consisted of a Pineapple Turnover Cake, delicious! The evening was full of laughs and great stories but was over with to quickly as we needed to be up and on the water early morning.
It was just that, 4.30am! We packed up and was on the water for 6.15am to start to make our asssent into the North Atlantic, the most challenging part of the trip that could see us in victory or have us fail miserably and result in one of us having to walk 10 miles to reach our car to ferry us back to the start which we certainly didn't want!
Lucky for us, Matty, Jay and Paul's knowledge of the sky's, cloud formattions meant that the final day couldn't have gone better. We paddled the 3km journey on open sea in style! The weather gods were with us once again.
Meeting up with the rest of the team for breakfast after we completed that section was the icing on the cake. We all got to finish the challenge together and over the finishing line we went.
