  • Poland; Krakow; Rakowicki Cemetery
Rakowicki Cemetery (Cmentarz Rakowicki) in Krakow, Poland, is a historic burial site founded in 1803, reflecting over two centuries of the city’s cultural and historical heritage. Originally created to comply with Napoleonic laws requiring cemeteries to be located outside city limits, it has since grown into one of Poland’s most significant cemeteries. Its tree-lined paths, varied architecture, and elaborate headstones create a tranquil and reflective atmosphere.
Among the many famous figures buried here are Jan Matejko, a renowned artist; Józef Dietl, the 19th-century mayor of Krakow; and Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński, a celebrated writer and translator. Additionally, the cemetery contains military sections dedicated to soldiers from various conflicts, including both the World Wars and the Allied forces. These places serve as a poignant reminder of Poland's turbulent history.
