    It's a catch 22. Devs don't make multi-gpu games because people don't have multi-gpu rigs. And people don't build multi-gpu rigs because devs don't support multi-gpu in games.

    • @builder396
      @builder396 5 лет назад +34

      Problem is also that multi-GPU rigs have to be purposely designed, mostly by having a motherboard with twin PCIe slots, which is not on your average motherboard thats shipped with your home PC, so its not an option to simply "upgrade" a normal PC into SLI, youd have to build it yourself from the ground up. Who would go through that effort if you can just buy a single beefier graphics card for the same or less money of 2 lower end ones?

    • @Carewolf
      @Carewolf 5 лет назад +23

      @@builder396 I think most good motherboards can handle it. The bigger issue for me is that the price of used GPUs doesn't drop as fast or as much as they used to. So I never got a chance where it made sense to buy a second 970, by the time the used prices finally started to drop, I needed more VRAM anyway and had buy a newer card with more VRAM.

      For 3D VR you need two ocular references for binocular depth perception - say for hand/eye co-ordination in an interactive sim. I wonder that two gpu cards might handle the L/R processing and output their combined scan into a single signal composite that bump maps, texture wrap's, and contour trace's collision physics or otherwise combines object surfaces from slightly different views for an over the Plane 3D object semi-holo render, rather than a paper doll screen plane object with orthogonal render map (2D) and screen vector rasters for adding the onscreen world and its objects movement... or something like that. That's one way to look at it. It is simply because not enough people were using it. Developers don't like to serve minorities. Nvidia's choice to remove the possibility on lower tier cards also caused this. The last "budget"card was the GTX950, after that Nvidia dropped support for everything below GTX1070.
      I think it is just the evolution.
      Hey, in the old days, you had a 2d card and a loop through additional video card, the 3Dfx VooDoo. After that, the Voodoo 2 came and you could use 2 of them, so basically this was the first SLI GPU setup for consumers....

    • @oceanbytez847
      @oceanbytez847 10 месяцев назад

      true, but multi-GPU also was the only way to go beyond the best possible performance for one part. For example the quad 1080Ti SLI set a rasterization record that the current 4090 only barely beat and it still had to be overclocked to do it. That's basically tech from almost a decade ago still managing to take home a win against the best of the modern world. if you were a person who truly wanted the absolute best with absolutely no concerns outside of performance then running multiple GPU's has been, and could still be the only way to take it to the next level past just water cooling and overclocking current tech. There is definitely a place for SLI and crossfire even if it is just another niche like custom water cooling, delidding, sanding, liquid metal thermal 'pasting', and liquid nitrogen cooling.

      @@SimonLeBonbonbon That's the problem with SLI and Crossfire, it's at the mercy of game developers. These game engines don't directly communicate with the card anyways. They utilize a standard API such as DirectX. There is a huge performance gain in forgoing the API but game devs aren't going to heavily customize their engines for each kind of GPU out there. So since most of the heavy work is done by the API anyways, then parallel GPU optimization should really be mostly on the shoulders of the API.
      The protocols for parallel GPU gaming need to be developed from scratch is they even bother to do that. In the next 10 years we'll start to see the lines between CPUs and GPUs blur and what we know to be a motherboard and its components likely be far different by 2030. So R&D is likely not on GPU parallelization.

    • @SimonLeBonbonbon

      @@krozareq Totally agree, unfortunately Johnny Casseroles comments are removed so I will modify my comments a bit. I can understand the support for SLI/CF dropping since it has become a niche market with less adepts. But when you compare current GPU's with those 10-15 years ago, there has been a massive performance gain. Who knows what we will experience in 10 years from now (I will be retired by that time) Whether the graphics calculation will move to integrated instead of discrete will only be clear once we are there.
      Perhaps (swapable) GPU's on motherboards just like current CPU's are used.
      That integrated graphics will have more processing power is without a doubt so perhaps GPU's eventually become a niche market.

As the images they are rendering are pretty much the same I would expect relatively equal frame rates then just scale both displays to the slower of the two frame rates. I suspect this approach would work pretty well because it would allow excellent single threaded performance when necessary as well as plenty of cores for each gpu in multi threaded applications. Unless you're building a literal home theater, 8k doesn't improve visual fidelity while even at a below standard distance. For a monitor, despite being at point blank range, you need something nearing the size of a living room tv for most to notice pixelization. We can increase pixel counts nearly forever, but we're nearing the point of being beyond human perception. The same could be said for framerates, but there is still plenty of room for growth in the top end.

      They will all move to MCM at some point, Instead of one large die, They will have smaller ones linked together, May have 2 dies linked doing normal gpu work like sli/xfire from the past, And another 1 dedicated to ray tracing, And one for A.I.
      There is only a few shrinks left then they are stuffed, If they want to keep increasing performance on the same infrastructure then they make smaller easier to make linked chips with less bad yields,Also bring costs down.

Though sli would raise frames rather well it didn’t really lower lag as much a just getting a better card. Why Bc the gpu is rendering a frame after the gpu b4 it even post its frame. Though this cuts down on lag nothing will beat rendering after the gpu as posted the frame b4 it if all else is the same. So 2 960 may have made you feel good Bc you can hit 60/144fps but a 980 doing it with one card was just better.

  • @jouniosmala9921
    @jouniosmala9921 5 лет назад +21

    Multi GPU support is atleast temporarily dead for two good reasons.
    1) Rendering and optimization techniques that are dependent on data available between and within a frame. If you need data from previous frame you cannot do it in parallel, if you rely data within a frame you need to do those computations on both cards.
    2) Lower level API:s. DX12 and Vulkan define things at such a low level that driver cannot do MultiGPU, so each game would have to program their own version of multi GPU support instead of relying driver doing the hard work.
    Now for the temporarily part. Real time Ray Tracing have been done on cluster of cards on cluster of computers. The Ray Tracing doesn't have data dependencies between rays, so in theory fully ray traced game could use any number of cards and number of rays per frame would scale perfectly. I don't say FPS since the set up time would and final output would still be handled by single card, but the extra cards could allow more to be rendered.

    • @memnarch129
      @memnarch129 5 лет назад +3

      So realistically Nvidia shouldnt have released a card that is both your GPU and Ray Tracing, but a card that links to your main GPU and this new card does NOTHING BUT the Ray Tracing. Think that would of went over better and would have given a legitimate reason to SLI and such, aka Ray Tracing on single card isnt possible so here is the RTX 2010 use your 1080TI for the frame rate and the 2010 handles the Ray Tracing. Also would of meant a more "reasonable" price for the Ray Tracing card.

    • @jouniosmala9921
      @jouniosmala9921 5 лет назад +4

      Practical ray tracing requires cuda cores in addition to RT cores and they need ultra high bandwidth communication like being in the same die. The performance cost of ray tracing isn't ray tracing. It is the shaders that process what is ray traced. Traditional renderer benefits that adjacent pixels do similar things and touch nearby data. But with ray tracing that locality is broken.
      Currently main problem with ray tracing is on the software side. Turing is extremely powerful graphics engine that only tiny fraction of what is possible has been utilized inorder to use more of the code that was written when targeting pascal cards.
      Anyway just bought 2070 super, and soon could test programming it in practice. However my current project doesn't use RT cores but is mostly about integer compute. And the 1660 ti has higher integer peak performance compared to 1080 ti. openbenchmarking.org/showdown/pts/clpeak
      Turing has many cost effective improvements that all require software that is completely different to what is written for Pascal to be fully utilized. My favorite graphics feature would allow Turing to run games at 144 fps even with all the ray tracing effects on. But it is one new feature that Nvidia warns developers about how much work it is to use. And we have seen how long it has taken developers to implement "IT JUST WORKS" easy stuff :D

    • @GuyFromJupiter
      @GuyFromJupiter 5 лет назад +1

      @@jouniosmala9921 Let me see if I got this right. The issue is not that RT cores aren't fast enough. RT cores trace rays more than fast enough for viable real time ray tracing. The issue is that doing something with those rays once they are traced requires traditional shaders, which have always been built to rely on predictable data usage. The shading performed when ray tracing requires a lot of random data access (meaning completely unpredictable), which neither software nor hardware is able to compensate for effectively. The performance hit from ray tracing is basically because GPU shaders spend a lot of time doing nothing while waiting on data. There is a lot of performance left over, but it is limited by latency.
      Simply put, the actual process of tracing rays is easy for RTX GPUs, but doing something useful with them causes a GPU to spend a lot of time idling while waiting on data since GPUs are built with a focus on high bandwidth and not low latency. This is something game developers and hardware manufacturers both need to figure out. I think AMD's RDNA architecture has a caching system designed to help solve this problem. Hopefully it won't be too long before we start seeing ray tracing capable GPUs from them, because I think they will be able to handle it very well. It certainly makes sense to me since next gen consoles are going to be ray tracing with Navi.
      Real time ray tracing is still in its infancy, and there is a lot of work left to be done to optimize it. Everybody seems to love hating on ray tracing, but it looks gorgeous and the performance is there. It just isn't easily accessible performance. Even as it is ray tracing isn't awful, but I do hope to see it improve. I have high hopes for the future of ray tracing in games, regardless of what people think right now.

    There is a very good reason why AMD/Nvidia killed Crossfire/SLI. We live in a capitalist society. By killing them, they can ensure you HAVE TO BUY a new card for $1000, and not recycle two older slower cards. Its a smart idea to capital on this and force their customers to buy new products. It makes the used card market less impactful in the industry. More e-waste but also more sales for AMD/Nvidia.

    I think the reason why SLI and Crossfire technology has been discontinued is because recent technological advancements in computer hardware confirmed that the more wattage each components draws from the PSU, the more heat gets produced, and so it causes thermal throttling and framerate/performance drops, so basically all CPU, GPU, SD, and RAM manufacturers are focusing on power efficiency and more benchmark performances in every newer generation, so that every new high-end PC hardware in the future will not only be much more powerful, but also SAVE power and as a result also REDUCE overall temperature of the components to achieve consistent long-term performance without any thermal interferences. correct me if I'm wrong.

    The problem with NVIDIA and AMD's arguments about limited SLI / Crossfire support is that a lot of people aren't really looking to buy brand new GPU's. I mean, they pretend as if everyone is a "fresh buyer" so to speak. And sure, for those people it's definitely better to go for *one* higher end GPU rather than *two* lower end ones, at this time. But, everyone is not in this position. I mean, for a lot of people (myself included) who bought brand new components a couple of years back (such as a 980 ti) might not feel like spending another ~$1,000 on a new GPU just to get that extra "oomph", when we could just buy another 980 ti real cheap from a friend or whatnot, to get similar (if not better) performance.
    With this in mind it's really obvious what the master plan is for NVIDIA and AMD. They clearly want to stifle the second hand market while encouraging people to buy new products instead (for obvious reasons). They don't want to compete against themselves when they release a new GPU, by having people say that two RX 580's in crossfire (for instance) has 3x better price to performance than their latest flagship.
