Have you ever wanted to play DCS World, but decided against it just because you couldn't afford a HOTAS? Well, I'm here to show you that a HOTAS is NOT necessary. As long as you have a standard console controller by your side, you too can hop into the skies and play DCS World! Just follow this tutorial for setting up your controller using Steam, download and import controller profiles I created many different DCS World aircraft, and just like that you will be able to fly like Maverick from Top Gun pulling cobras to defeat your enemies!
Just remember - YOU are now the reason you will either enjoy or hate DCS World. It's a tough game after all! But at least now you can give it a shot in the first place. So please, enjoy, and maybe I'll see you in the skies!

!! IMPORTANT: If you're coming from my old gamepad tutorials, make sure you remove the old shoulder button modifiers in DCS. They are typically called Joy Button 5 and 6. If you don't remove them, none of the modified actions will work!! (thanks JetWay for bringing this to my attention)

Lots of grace!
How do I remove the old modifier buttons? I think this is what is giving me an issue as I don't have the mouse cursor on the right stick, camera with right stick works with the modifier but I don't get the cursor control.
Go to Controls Menu -> Select the aircraft you're setting up -> Click the "Modifiers" button on the bottom left -> Select any custom modifiers and remove them -> save changes
@Tuuvas Thanks, I worked it out. Is the switching to mouse cursor instead of camera not available in the flaming cliffs modules?
It is not since flaming cliffs modules don't have clickable cockpits. This also applies to the Su-25T.
I don't know what's more impressive. The fact that you can air to air refuel upside down, or the fact that you can do it with a controller.
Ralfi will probably start a GoFundMe for that mental check up Tuvas, right after he chucks that x-box controller out the window.
lol I'll still be sending him another controller to try from the mental ward
Well played sir.
This ended up being a much more in depth tutorial than I was expecting it to be. Well done Tuuvas
Tell me about it! I thought it would be shorter now that I'm providing profiles instead, but it still took close to 30min! lol
Thanks for sharing Tuuvas, your gamepad content and guides have been very helpful for many users out there.
My pleasure, Bignewy! I hope even more new players will be coming in now that I've uploaded all my controller profiles.
I've owned DCS since 2016 and I haven't had this much fun playing it as I have today. I tried the A-10C back in 2017 and decided it was too clunky with the joystick and keyboard. This is an absolute game changer. I spent a good part of the day going through the A-10C tutorials and was amazed with how intuitive and easy the controls were. I travel for work and play on a laptop, and it is unbelievable what I'm capable of doing on this game while on the go. You've singlehandedly restored my love for DCS world. Thank you!
When I first came across your channel I decided to try an old 360 controller I had lying around. Was surprised how easy it was to use. Now I use the FlyDigi Vader Pro 3 that you reviewed a little while back and really am enjoying it. I have a HOTAS, but spend most of my time on the controller since I don't have to re-arrange my desk to use it. It's a great entry into DCS for those who are curious and you can always get a dedicated HOTAS after you've spent some time in DCS and learned what will really works for you. Hope anyone interested in DCS sees this video, it's a great community to be part of!
You, my friend, are AWESOME! Thank you for this updated video of mapping the controls and for making all of your control profiles available via DCS. The additions of the trigger and bumper modifications I think are going to make a world of difference. Keep the badass vids coming!
This is honestly an amazing video for anyone wanting to try DCS without spending money on any joysticks or HOTAS setups. I salute you sir and thank you for the amazing contributions you make to the DCS community!
Brother, I have been running your control scheme probably for the past 6 months and it has changed my whole perspective of the game. Made it easy to bring my simple ps4 controller and be able to fly and operate whichever aircraft i wanted to fly.
Can't thank you enough for your continuous dedication to help the community! This guide is certainly the best one yet, very clear, very easy to follow (with the downloadable profiles PLUS layout images) and once you get the logic behind it you can definitely enjoy DCS with a controller. You rule Tuuvas!!!
I thought I was smart for mapping my controller all kinds of ways and back as an extension to my cheap joystick for DCS but you are on another level.. respect!
This video is absolutely unbelievably good. All I can say is if I saw this video 2 years ago I would be about $800 richer from not buying a HOTAS and headtracker. Absolute killer, especially for how many High Schoolers with a limited budget already have an Xbox or Playstation and could put all that money towards a module in DCS instead of a stick or tracker. Thanks for taking the time to post this AND lay the groundwork with the pre-made profiles!
Thanks so much for sharing your gamepad profiles. I lost all of the profiles that I had set up when I upgraded my pc and never got around to assigning them all again. Now, I can download these and get back into some of my favourite aircrafts !
Nice! I'm glad I can help that process along!
bro the way you explain, do the videos, edit them, its just perfect, with this video you helped me very much (as a newbie in DCS world) and im so thankful for that, i now have the M2KC, i use your controls (the M2K controls are still WIP) but im going to wait until its finished bc i love the M2K, again thank you very much! 😆
Thank you so much for the professional tutorial, I was using your previous controller layout. this update make it much easier and efficient I really like the new way of the zoom control.
Good job and thank you again
Thanks so much for this video! I’m finally able to play some dcs for the first time! So far I’m having a blast hehe
Very interesting topic! While I am in a different rabbit hole already, but agree a lot with you. Especially inverted AAR is nice big middle finger to the guys saying that it is literally impossible to fly straight with entry or mid level joystick or even TM Warthog.
Massive respect buddy thats simply outstanding that you can accomodate the HOTAS all in the controller.
very impressed.
Pete
Wow this is just awesome. The work that you put into this is extreme. Many thanks
Thanks so much man, I'm coming from Il-2 which doesn't require all the steam trickery. The expanded features for the xbox controller are cool in general, very informative video. I'm excited to learn some new aircraft
I love your backdrop. Thanks for all you do for DCS!
Always appreciate your work and effort to make this possible man, keep it up💯
My man, great video once again, glad to see you at it!
Bro, when you refuel led upside down I friggen lost it. So cool and that earned you a sub
I downloaded your profile (SU-27). It's super cool and really fun to play with. Plus, it frees up more space on my computer desk for other stuff, Thank you😃😃😃
Love the videos man, this one was really helpful!
I just wanna say thank you for this. I'm not very good at flight sims, but I like having something to play with my father, and since I don't have a dedicated HOTAS, this makes it a lot easier.
I couldn’t for the life of me get the camera movement to work while setting this up on a laptop. Once I disabled and removed the head tracking device that was built into the webcam it has worked like a charm! Thanks man
You can actually use your built in webcam as a head tracker if you want, and free up your right stick for something else
Thanks to you, I feel comfortable playing DCS on my laptop. Not the most ideal but it's great to play the game without the need of hotas far away from home
Thanks for your videos... They always help me out... I already have a hotas setup but i still need a gamepads for wso activity❤💙💛 Greetings from Germany, keep it up
No problem! I'm glad I can help out still in some way at least
I've been playing with a PS4 controller for 2 years now, and this is life changing. Thank you!
Ive been using controller as well and has been doing rather okay but your control preset is 1000x better thank you so much
Thanks you man you've rekindled my love for this game
Thank you for your Video. I used it to set up the controllers of the Lenovo Legion Go
Nice! I'm using a GPD Win Mini myself
I’m kinda shocked at how well this works. I have a ton of money into my hotas and love it, but man this isn’t a bad option at all. If I sunk some hours into it I bet I could fly just as good as with my hotas. Amazing work dude!
Glad it's working out so well for you! More often than not, HOTAS users are surprised just how accessible DCS is with a gamepad. At least based on the feedback I've gotten over the years with my layouts.
Man!!!! Thanks for all your help!!!! Excellent Job!!!
I'll stick to my HOTAS, but this is incredible. I've heard about "that guy with the controller", I thought I'm a control freak, but, mister, this is another level. 🙂 It reminds me having two modifiers on a single finger on my old Hotas X. I still use modifiers probably more than others (just a guess), but these controller setups are a great example why they are so useful. Lose two buttons, gain up to fourfold on the others! And the video tutorial quality is top-notch as well. Kudos!
im glad that ive found this vid you are very helpful thanks
dude, thank you so much for this detailed video
No problem!
Lifesaving stuff for when I can't be at my main rig!
This man is clutch, for sure subscribing.
I am sharing THE FUCK out of this video
Sooo. I used to play a lot of old school combat flight sims and I've always wanted to have a go at DCS since I found out about it a few years ago, but could never justify the price of the new style joystick and all the other cool gadgets you can get for it. I never thought of using my game pad, this is a game changer if it works!
youre the reason i play dcs. just started a week ago p.s you can export controller layouts from steam too
Yeah, I was testing the exports from Steam for a few months with random people. It was just too unreliable, especially for non-Steam games like DCS Standalone.
@@Tuuvas I wondered if you might've seen it already but it was buggy somehow. Thanks anyway for all your help. I'm playing all missions with the su25t rn, before I move up ladder/waiting for a stream sale.
Im glad you help those who can't or don't want to shell out money for a full Hotas. but there's no way I would rather use a game controller. I love the emersion a Hotas offers.
I've been watching you for a while! I'm seeing this with my own eyes and I still think it's a trick!
Dude I wish I found you a year ago when I first got into DCS, at the time I was going in blind so all I ever heard was "oh you have to get a HOTAS" I Have one now but had I known when I was first starting off I probably would have eased into DCS much more easier
Thank you for this dude
This is what I like about ya, I'm thinking of getting in DCS and I don't have the hardware to play it with that.
Thank you bro enjoyed your video
for the last 2 weeks, i've not been super sold on steam input, because I'd been using your prior controller configs with the two bumper modifiers and insanely snappy camera with a mouse and keyboard in my lap just fine.
My opinion changed the SECOND i started looking around with the right stick having just fiddled the throttle with it moments prior, lol
Great tutorial...
Bit of fault finding, I loaded in with the Mustang and checked controls. Everything perfect. However when trying Free Flight with any aircraft and the controller profile loaded, I cannot look around.
The mouse moves correctly as it should, however when in the camera move or look around mode, it will not move. Any help?
I love dogfighting in DCS with a VR headset, so I need smooth, precise controllers with plenty of buttons and switches that I can easily find by touch, because using a keyboard in VR doesn't work out very well. I use a desktop VKB Gunfighter joystick and Virpil Mongoos throttle and they have both been perfect for my needs.
Do you have any extra recommendation for Steam controller? I'm glad if you have a review/trial/setup with that too!
i cant get the right stick movement to work with the bumpers, any tips
Mr tuvaas, thank you for your tutorial, but how am I supposed to bind the RDR Cursor Switch (Up, Down, Left and right) to be able to slew the TGP on my F-16C Viper? The FCR Radar slews automatically when I press LB and move the right joystick. The TGP does not. Even with it as SOI.
@Tuuvas what song did you use at the start of this it's awesome!
Hello Thankyou for the guide it was really helpful setting everything up for controller I never picked up this game because I never bought a hotas nor wanted to play on mouse and keyboard but now this is a game changer I was noticing that there wasn’t a keybind to turn on the tactical computer/ screen in the su 25t is there anyway you could direct me in the right direction for setting up a keybind for it I tried using a keybind that wasn’t being in used under your profile but couldn’t understand which of the buttons they list is for the d pad
Thank you legend,DCS original camera movements really glitchy for gamepad users and it really helps🫡
To be able to play DCS to relax on a lunch break for instance would be invaluable!
Hi Tuvuvas, thank you for the guide. I'm facing an issue where once I launch the game, the curosr keeps floating to the left automatically and I have no control over it. Not sure what is wrong.
Double check your deadzone inner and outer settings. Deadzone inner should be increased if your thumbsticks suffer from stick drift. However, this can also happen if you changed the Deadzone outer by accident. Make sure the outer deadzone is still the default value (indicated by the gray arrow on the right side of the slider)
@@TuuvasThank you, it was the inner deadzone value. You're the best!
In your experience, would the profiles/setup work at all with an xinput compatible controller where triggers are digital and not axis?
8bitdo sn30pro
Thanks for your help and keep up the good work, your channel is awesome!
Yup, Nintendo switch pro style controllers will still work as long as you remember to setup the Steam controller configuration steps. The only issue is rudder control will be more difficult to use as it'll be On/Off instead of an analog range
Any chance you will do a tutorial or two on IL2-1946?
Love your facecam background lmao
HELLUVA tutorial!!! It was akin to a college semester crash course condensed down to 30 minutes.
Best feature of all? The Xbox controller works great from my recliner!
The only problem now is that I am upside down at 800', and I dunno how to fly! 😐
Onward Ho
Quick tip in case you’ve not tried it before, setting the view axis to the absolute one or whatever can help a lot for looking around quicker and having more control. It’s way better for me than just moving it that way, and it’s way better than having it set to a hat switch on a hotas. Whatever works for you is great, but that’s what worked for me in case you’ve not tried it yourself.
This is actually what I used to have in my previous gamepad guides. Zoom View axis was set to LB + Triggers (just like how Mouse Scroll Up/Down is today via Steam). The snappiness of the zoom axis option was indeed very nice, but it often resulted in unintentional rudder input when trying to hold a specific zoom level. In particular, max zoom.
Now you can easily hold a zoom level with the mouse scroll bind. It's a bit slower and slightly framey, but you also get other benefits like zooming in and out in F10 view, scrolling UI menus, turning knobs in the cockpit, etc. There's a bunch of benefits now over the snappy zoom axis.
You are a Truly HERO
Love your videos. after following this set-up, and removing the old shoulder button modifiers, I'm having a bit of an issue. when I hold left bumper (LAlt) to, for instance, slew the targeting display in the SU-25 using right stick, the head movement is still enabled for right stick. so I cant move the targeting display, or use left bumper as a modifier. While holding left bumper I am still only moving the head camera. I am using your official setup from the DCS forum and video instructions. Thanks
Did you make sure to set up Right Stick Mode Shift's Mode Shift Button and set it as Left Bumper? If so, join the Discord and I'll see if I can figure out what's going wrong
Having problems with the controls/trim/hold modes using an X-box controller in the AH64. I'll get a steady platform (90-100kt level attitude) hit force trim and/or turn hold modes on and if I release my forward input on the cyclic it automatically applies rapid aft cyclic. It's like the trim isn't working and it goes to a 0kt attitude. Any tips?
See if Force Feedback is enabled. If so, disable it in the Main Menu Options
Hey Tuuvas, Mine feels like it has like a super "easy assist" mode enabled or something. does not want to let me perform any type of evasive barrel rolls, or any other inverted menuvuers. feels there is something constantly trying to keep me verted. any idea? fairly new to DCS
Ah right, go to Options, Gameplay, then uncheck "Game Flight Mode". This is likely the cause of your issue
@@Tuuvas perfect. Ty
I would love this guide but for Falcon BMS and IL-2 series too.
Hey Tuuvas. I’ve successfully used your Apache pilot profile for use with an Xbox controller. I’ve now switched to a PS4 controller for the trackpad & gyro etc. However, when I go to the control options in DCS game menu, it still has the Xbox controller listed, not the PS4 controller, is this normal? The PS4 controller has been enabled and configured in steam/settings/controller & in the DCS controller settings config in steam too.
Yup that's normal. This is because Steam creates a virtual "Xbox 360" controller for whatever game Steam is running. So while DCS doesn't know you're using a PS4 controller, Steam does. And Steam will still translate your gyro and trackpad actions into Xbox 360 actions.
@@Tuuvas You’re an absolute legend. I was already familiar with the control configs as I have a steam deck. It was the control settings inside DCS that were confusing. It’s all working now. Now the really easy part, becoming a proficient helicopter pilot 😂
Thank you so much.
On the su27 Whats the find for air to air
Bro, are you playing in Sim more or Game mode for avionics? Either way, great video, i think you have just removed one of the biggest barriers to players trying to get into DCS. Great job!
Sim mode all the way. Gotta have that full experience
@@Tuuvas*Tips Hat *
Just as a FYI, game mode is now completely unsupported by the devs and should not be used. Will likely break whatever module you fly if it's turned on.
I've been playing DCS with mouse and keyboard for 3 years but I may switch over to Gamepad.
same here :) might go for it , to be honest i think DualSense could be even better for that then the Xbox controller :)
I'd strongly suggest it. I've been playing with a controller for several months now, there isn't anything I can't fly with it (AH-64, F-14, AV-8B, P-51 etc) and that includes carrier landings and aerial refueling.
@Adam-qk5tt If you intend on using the gyro a lot, then yeah, DualSense is absolutely better! It has the best gyro on the market among gamepads.
Do you also have a layout for a su 57?
hey @tuuvas i think the controller layout page isnt working on imgur, is something wrong with it?
Yeah, imgur deleted the album for some reason. But it's completely irrelevant with this new video out now anyways. All my profiles are now available for download on the User Files section of the DCS website
@Tuuvas Thank for all the effort
Question: any chance do all this for IL 2 great battles?
Including key bidding
@Tuuvas
Nope. I have zero interest in IL2
Thanks for this mate now I don't have to bother dming you to help me get my controls setup for steam, it's me nimble btw
This is awesome, first I want to say thanks for the vid and downloads! But, I do the right bumper and right analog click, and it doesn’t allow me to make my camera look around, just makes the mouse disappear. Any thoughts?
Try these steps:
1. Load into the cockpit of your plane
2. ESC -> Adjust Controls -> Axis Commands
3. Select any cell under the Mouse column
4. Click Restore to Defaults
5. OK to save
6. Try controlling the camera again
@@Tuuvasthanks man that worked
My question is, I don't use steam, just the DCS world stand alone version. Will the binds shown, will the bumper/mouse commands work as shown, or will I have to manually add them? Adding profiles given will keep the full functionality without using steam whatsover? (mouse commands, etc)
In order to use my profiles in DCS, you MUST at least set up Keyboard Left ALT on L1/LB and Right ALT on R1/RB using some form of remapping software. It can be Steam, Input Mapper, DS4Windows, reWASD, joystick gremlin, etc. Steam was just the most commonly used application, hence why this guide is centered around it.
But since Steam is also used to remap mouse movement, clicking, and scrolling - that means whatever alternative software you use also needs to remap mouse controls to your controller.
@@Tuuvas 🤔 what initially seemed to be a streamed, straight forward process, is becoming a bit more complicated that originally indicated. Or so it seems
Yeah, there's a lot of upfront set up. Especially if you don't plan to use Steam as that renders my 30min tutorial nearly useless to you. But once you've got the mouse and keyboard remaps in place, you can download and import any of my layouts - which is arguably 99.9% of the work done for you with a few simple clicks.
I bit the bullet and just installed Steam (stand alone version). No complaints here! Works great, although I do have to adjust the mouse settings (sensitivity and dead zones)
Nice! I’ve been trying to AAR upside down on my controller but I can’t get it yet lol
I need to figure out how to remove the headlook mode and add the zoom into the regular mode - I use a webcam with AI track and don't need the camera control layer.
@Tuuvas would mind sharing your Steam Input Profile on the Community Profiles inside steam?
Trust me, if it was reliable I would have. But too many people couldn't see the profiles I uploaded
i use my own button layout because i wanted to change some things, but im having a really hard time with axis tune, i hate standard curves, and i cant see to fly the mig29 or other planes.. what are your axis tune curves?
I don't use any curves nor saturation settings. Everything is default except deadzone to prevent stick drift
@@Tuuvas idk, especially with the mig29, the minimum Y axis imput is altready too much, i had to put the saturation Y to 40 to control this thing, it does the same with the mig21 and A4
Hello can you please help me I might have mapped something wrong but it seems to be the same but when I press the left trigger (left rudder pedal) it zooms out like the scroll wheel goes back (it dosent do that with the right trigger)
Make sure you've set the mode shift button to left bumper for Left Trigger
also the weapon switch and weapon shoot buttons arent working specifically on the f15c no matter how many times I re map it on adjust controls. Can you help me? Ty.@@Tuuvas
I have, yet its still not working @@Tuuvas
I bought the f15c some time ago and I’m looking for a new aircraft to buy. Which one would you recommend?
Honestly, it depends. It's hard to recommend something without knowing what you're looking for in your next module purchase.
For example, if you already liked the F-15C then you might consider getting the F-15E. Just keep in mind it isn't as good a dog fighter, primarily meant for strike, and has a fantastic radar for BVR.
Or alternatively, if you want to explore a mix of everything, then the F/A-18C will give you BVR, dogfighting, CAS, Strike, SEAD, anti-ship, carrier ops, etc. And is excellent at almost everything.
I went through this with car sims PC/PlayStation back in the day. - You cannot beat a controller - games are written around a controller. Games would have sucked if you could not master them without a controller. I played GT4 for about 2 years with a FB steering wheel. One day I was not in the mood to setup the steering wheel, I played with a controller and in 45 minutes I beat all my own records by miles. Do play Flight sim with a joystick and pedals, it's part of the fun but that's it.
how can i change some of the key binds to my preference if i don't like a specific key bind position?
Use my old video to learn how to set key and axis binds

what a guy... i made a mistake setting up my controller in steam and he took the time to jump on voice and help me figure it out
Thx a lot amazing toturial could by any chance share tha saturatuon and the dead zone of your controls
They are all provided in my profiles. But all I set is a deadzone. No curve, no saturation.
after using your full setup when i load into dcs my camera and mouse move without me even pressing anything and its uncontrollable, Ive rewatched and followed the steps again but can not see where I am going wrong pls help.
It sounds like you need a larger deadzone. Try using 2000 or even 2500 for the Joystick Mouse deadzone setting
@@Tuuvas after finding my deadzone when using the controller setups for the su 33 flanker, I nothing works apart from the stick and head movement, I went through steam and added all the modifier's Im going to go back through it and see if its all done correctly but yea all the throttles and everything are on bumpers not buttons.
Hi Tuuvas great tutorial and life saving video , one question if you don’t mind , i have my O button and X button not functioning, it doesn’t manage the aircraft speed, any idea on how to fix this ( I’m on PS4 controller) , thanks alot ❤.
Fixed it !! Still thanks , i just didn’t download the controllers for the frog thung
Hey tuuvas thanks for the updated tutorial, I downloaded your new module for the F18, and none of the controls for it work 😢, I went ahead and reset the bindings and tried again but nothing. If you could help me out I would greatly appreciate it, and for refrence all the other planes are working just fine, thanks for making it possible to play this game without dumping 1000s of dollars!!
No problem! If you followed my old Steam/DCS controller tutorials, what you HAVE to make sure to do is not just reset existing binds, but more importantly, remove any custom modifiers. For example, if you had left and right bumpers added as modifiers, you MUST remove them from the modifiers list. Otherwise none of the Left/Right modifier binds will work from my new profiles
@@Tuuvas thank you for the reply I should’ve mentioned that I had gone into the settings and done that as well with no luck, if you have any other ideas what it might be it would be appreciated
is it possible to just use head tracking and free up the right thumb stick and use it for throttle and rudder control ??
you could, sure
@@Tuuvas thanks man you are a legend
can you show they bindings fir vader 3 pro?
Hi. Do these work with DCS stand alone? ie. Not Steam?
Yes, there's a whole section dedication to Standalone
Is there any way to get a controller to work in the ways described in this tutorial on the standalone? I actually don't have steam 😅
4:40
Tuuvas, this is amazing, thank you, thank you thank you, I can’t wait to go back to dcs.
Question: do you think I can have two joypads with the same assignments running at once?
It would be cool to introduce my kid to dcs and he could ‘drive’ whilst I run the systems on the other joypad.
I have two 8bitdo controllers sn30 pro plus and sn30 pro, both xinput compatible acting like xbox360 controllers.
Best
aww that's adorable lol. I've never done it myself, but as long as your controllers are detected as two separate devices, it should work fine. It's much the same way that DCS detects a throttle and stick as two separate devices, and allows both to be used at once
@@Tuuvas Great, thanks I'll give it a go. P.s. any suggestion about what profile to use for the F-86?
Unfortunately no, I've never flown the F86 in DCS so I wouldn't even know where to begin. You can try importing something like the P-51D profile then adjust from there?
