Oh. I remember Jadzia Dax commenting in "Trials and Tribble-ations" that it was leather (did I hear wrong?), so I ran with that. Yeah, shortly after I published this I realized that scanning-disc part was wrong, but it was too late to change it. Having not regularly seen the discs used beforehand, I assumed they were like mini-CD/DVDs and needed to be removed from the container to be read. Thank you for the corrections! --EVA_Unit_4A
These vids are the only place I get to voice my opinions on what I'm covering; that's why they run long. I can't do all this in the text reviews, as those run long enough! Naw- chrome plastic would have been a little over-the-top for this toy, I think. A collector's item, perhaps, but not this replica *toy*. But I didn't see any bad paint apps on this at all, nor my TOS Communicator. Um... yes- the moire pattern spins via internal motor. >.>? --EVA_Unit_4A
BIT LONG IN THE TOOTH, but good review. Just a FYI- the actual props had molded grain plastic, no leather. The only thing I think sucks (I HAVE ONE) is the obvious sloppy silver paint for what would be the metal parts. Would be so cheap and easy to use chromed plastic on all the TOS replicas they offer. and would be worth a few bucks more. Bare metal foil time! BTW, the moire spins via a motor too, like the MR TOS Tricorder. Later. l
@FeatherHailfrost Oh, I have no idea! You're asking the wrong person. I was just throwing out a hypothetical when I said that. ^^; Although... knowing of the persistence of some Trekkers, more-expensive replicas may actually be out there, but I wouldn't know where to look. --EVA_Unit_4A
Oh, I have no idea how much a *real* one would weigh! But with some toys (regardless of affiliation, genre, etc.), the buyer sometimes notices a lack of weight or bulk beyond their expectations. I was simply trying to say that this was one of those times. --EVA_Unit_4A
Yup, guess you're right, I'm being too picky considering what a great item this is for the money..it's just that it's so dead on, that a more realistic metal finish would make this near perfect. A little buffing cleared up the blemishes in the paint on mine, and a couple of light passes with some fine steel wool makes it look a bit more like brushed aluminum, Also I was just pointing out the spinning moire 'cause I thought maybe you overlooked it.
The LED's that DST use these days are too bright. I love my TMP phaser but it lights up my room like a discothèque and actually hurts my eyes if it is close to my body when I fire. Just because they make them so bright...doesn't mean you have to use them. Should use less powerful ones...which would also make the cells last longer. Seems like the too bright LED's have found their way into the tricorders too.
The best replicas are produced by getting the Technical Manual and following Franz Joseph's diagrams. True, they could use a little updating -- nowadays we could have working data discs -- but it's the best way.
Debatable, and it depends on what you want in a TOs tricorder. Marco makes a great kit, but you have to assemble it yourself. There is the Diamond select version which is not only a nice replica, but thankfully fairly priced at about $25 to $30, and they make all 3 versions, but they could definitely do with some upgrades, such as metal trim and faceplate. There are plenty of modifications out there, fortunately, so that helps. Master replicas made a very nice tricorder but it sold out a long time ago and, why you might be able to pick one up on eBay, be prepared to pay a ridiculous price, over a grand. The good news is, the Wand company is considering making them, just as they did the phaser and communicator, and they tend to make the best replicas out there, but they have not decided for sure. If you really want the best of the best, try contacting the Wand company and help convince them to put this together.
@jsf525 The cost of the replica has nothing to do with it playing actors' voices or not. An insanely expensive replica (la-dee-da!) could also have such a foolish feature. As said, any replica should be made to produce the sounds heard onscreen from the depicted device. Voices not included.
@hakavon because it's a cheap $50 prop. buy the master replica for $1,000.00 which I have 3 and I do have all 3 of these dst. these also have the sound efx sounds too
I hate these life size models of the handheld props that include recordings of someone's voice. Why would Spock's voice come from the tricorder? Let it make sounds like the old Playmates tricorder did, but VOICES?!?! No.
I would like to know where you got the idea the "data disks" were supposed to be inderted into the moire. I've been around since the first episode aired.....never any mention, or evidence of that anywhere. and spocks tricorder never had a hand held scanner...the only scanner was in McCoys POUCH..NOT his Tricorder. Just sayin.
Actually Spock’s Tricorder did have a hand scanner, in the episode ‘Dolman of Elas’ Spock uses the hand scanner from his Tricorder. There is a reference to the Science Tricorder having a scanner in a article back in the 70’s…it was just never used other than that one episode.
we live in 2013 now, how does that replica measure your blood pressure or something other neath stuff instead of playing off pitched sentences from spock!
I bought one of these off eBay and couldn't figure out how to get to the battery until I watched your video. Thanks!
Who could ever have guessed? :) Thank you indeed!
IBM had a portable dictaphone from about the same time as the show and it's surprisingly similar in appearance. No shoulder strap though.
Battery replacement instructions at 9:11 were very helpful. Thanks.
Love the sound affects
compare this tricorder to the toy one that came out with the new film (2008)
AND YOU SEE HOW AWSOME IT IS!
Mine plays Spock's voice very fast. He almost sounds like one of the chipmonks.
Most of the Spock lines seem to be from Arena.
Too bad it didn't have an LCD screen.

Extra: But sir, this is beyond our safe warp capabilities, she's flying apart..
Sulu: FLY HER APART THEN!
Oh that was you singing. I thought what the heck I dont remember that scanner doing that.
@fiandrhi
Glad you liked it. ^^
--EVA_Unit_4A
Why would you want Spock talking out of it anyway? You just need the sound effects that they used on the show.

As joker said on where did you get such wonderful toys
@TNG128MB

I just had that dammed bit stuck in my head because it had recently been uploaded to RUclips, so...

Another great review keep it up man
Where did you purchase this amazing piece of technology?

Thanks for the review. I think I will order one. It's usually pronounced "mwah-RAY", by the way.
I love Leonard nimoy he's darn cute

They got the scanning sound effect wrong.
Naugahyde. Per "The Making Of Star Trek" paperback in the '70s.
Oh my.
who makes the best Star Trek Original Series Tricorder?

@@michaellauinger7406 Thanks man I posted this question 5 years ago!

My first button fell into the face ugh do you or someone know how to remove the face ??
Umm... a screwdriver?
@hakavon because it's a cheap $50 prop. buy the master replica for $1,000.00 which I have 3 and I do have all 3 of these dst.

I don't think they used leather in the 23rd century, did they? Like real leather from animals? They would have replicated it, right?
@GhibliFan1
Yes, and yes.
I hate these life size models of the handheld props that include recordings of someone's voice. Why would Spock's voice come from the tricorder? Let it make sounds like the old Playmates tricorder did, but VOICES?!?! No.
It was Tolex, wasn't it? (not leather).

@henryo75
Why don't you watch the video and find out...? -_-#
--EVA_Unit_4A
Is this Eric Rochow?
Nope.
How can you talk about this in 20 min?
What Star Trek toy isn't an impulse buy? :)
10:36 LMAO
For fancy dress just use a 1970s tape recorder and the cig lighter out of a car! 😃❤️😎👍
Just the like spokesman for KFC he not the real colonel I saw and heard the real on TV.

CORRECTLY PUNCTUATED AND CAPITALIZED: I bet it's made in China. Never would Star Fleet buy from China.
