It really just looks like an evolution of the 2379 one, which borrowed queues from the HP Jornada and the like, whereas the Prodigy one looks more like an irregularly shaped iPad. Honestly, the idea that tricorders and PADDs would be totally separate devices is a bit dated at this point, when it's more likely that they'd essentially be the same kind of device, but specialised in terms of size and peripheral suite, much as with tablets and phones, which are just the same device, but different sizes, and the smaller ones come with extra connectivity.
For a tricorder I actually like the transparent effect. You hold it up to a plant, for example, and you see the plant, while the tricorder points out different aspects. Same if you use it as a tactical display, you can see the landscape through the transparent display, and the tricoder can point out enemy positions etc.
Another way to view is that...Assuming USS Protostar is a prototypical ship (because of the slipstream stuff we see in the opening), maybe we can assume a lot of stuffs (including tricorder and phaser) in the ships are also prototypes/experimental devices.
I think it absolutely fits as a next evolution of the Nemesis Padcorder. It has some similarity to the form factor of the Enterprise (2250s) scanner, and there have been others with similar slide-outs, like the ST III tricorder. I think it's a great design, except that it doesn't include buttons or sensors on the slide-out parts. There are only two practical reasons for flips and slid-outs, 1) to make a device smaller for storage or pocket/belt carry, and 2) to protect components like controls and sensors when the device is not in active use. I'd prefer to see sensors and controls that are covered when the slide is closed and exposed when it's open. But overall, it's a great design.
For me this is a far more logical version of the tricorder than those trying to stay with the more TNG style. I absolutely hate the small screens and find the tricorder, these days, to be what happens when real world tech outpaces our older science fiction. Since it's not using holograms the slide up section which Roc-Tahk looks through to see/scan the illusory critters looks like an augmented reality feature. Literally looking at a target while seeing overlays of the data on the actual target on the slide up screen.
Love your vids guys! Thanks so much. I think maybe this ship as a prototype or NX has lots of experimental tech as well. Maybe the tech is designed to be easily replicated as well since we see the shuttle being replicated. Yeah all the tech and design looks to be easily made and integrated with the prostar itself. They all can be replicated and operated with ease. If you break it lose it thats ok and data is constantly being added to the ship and its linked. I'm excited to see more especially the transporters. That star wars game u mentioned I think may be knights of the old republic which I have to mention because its an amazing game.
I think it's important to remember that the Protostar is a technology test-bed. All of the equipment - the vehicle replicator, phaser pistol, tricorder, etc. - is all experimental. This Tricorder probably has features that are used in the future designs as well as features that were determined to be useless or otherwise un-needed.
I do wish the tricorder and phaser looked more time period accurate but, what can you do. This is what today's kids are familiar with because of the Kelvin movies.
Here's my problem, from Janeway to the tech on the ship. How is all of this "specialized" advanced stuff on a experimental training ship? Historically only the best of Starfleet are assigned to the experimental ships, not cadets. Which means the Janeway hologram is completely unnecessary! I will push back and say the phaser and tricorder aren't specialized but were abandoned (test equipment) by Starfleet when the ship was lost.
It looks “cool” but for what should be pseudo-military tech the whole weird shaped screen seems more like form over function. I’m okay with ditching the clamshell design and going for a bigger more dynamic screen, the older tricorder sets are badly in need of a visual update in that regard, but I would have kept it simpler and used the Nemesis tricorder as the basis, keep the screen square and functional.
I've noticed that this is the second video in row you are using year 2389 for Star Trek: Picard. Any particular reason for that? As far as I know, Picard takes place in 2399.
Idk why everything that looks advanced must look "Kelvin", it's fine being the next version of the tricorder or a different version. It's like their ability to make things look more advanced has changed, I appreciate the new look and it makes me feel like tech is advancing and not stagnant like it use to
the question of where it fits is a leading question. you don’t want it to be the new standard tricorder so you ask the question hoping so,ome official will give you the answer you want but the real answer is…..it’s the new standard tricorder design that won the star fleet contract for that time
Hi guys. Sorry to hijack the discussion but I’ve just found out Discovery season 4 isn’t going to released in the UK on Friday as planned. Further more the entire series is being pulled from Netflix in the Uk. Absolutely gutted.
I'm hoping it's a tricorder-padd combination. No reason such a device shouldn't exist. I wish it didn't extend the way it does though, it doesn't seem to reveal any usable buttons, and it doesn't protect it like some of the other slide ones. Doesn't do anything.
Given that this is a work of fiction and not a documentary..... it can look however it likes :-) Sure, its a kids show and its going to become a toy - but nit picking lineage doesn't work for 2 reasons. Firstly its a different production team and I like that they put their own spin on it - its the same reason why the argument for the DISCO enterprise looks different to the one on screen SIXTY YEARS AGO.... it needs updating as long as its recognisable. This IS recognisable as a tricorder. More recognisable than the new discovery com badge ones are..... Things need to change and new production teams need to put their own spin on it. I may be wrong but wasn't the Picard one referenced as an old piece of tech and therefore maybe neither Federation built OR indeed from the Picard era - may well have dated back to the Enterprise time. Also, imagine this IS real.... its not beyond the realms of possibility that the federation went through a period of "changing suppliers" for some tech especially for what seems to be an experimental vessel such as the one in Prodigy. Imagine Apple built the Tricorders then they switched to Samsung for a bit...
Yeah I found it interesting that Sam brought up how three tricorders that were featured in shows that were all under the same showrunner and team of people... all happen to look similar! It's almost as if when a group of people are making multiple different TV shows, the tech and different design elements are going to look all very similar! I'm almost kind of wondering if Sam left out the TOS tricorder from this lineup on purpose because he knows that Star Trek tech aesthetic changes from one team to the next.
What if that Protostar indeed come from the Kelvinverse? but since her transwarp engine looks a prototype, it could send the ship to the TOS universe in a fly test accident (and that's why she had no crewmen).
i dont get the function of why it slides out like a transformer except to make it a cool toy. i would have rathered a flip out original design but it be a full touchscreen like a motorola razr
Well that is the problem when making sci fi set in our future. Current world tech very quickly catches up to what ever tech they could afford to put in the shows.

Honestly what has changed is what people view as high tech. Old school tricorders look like 20th century technology
The Prodigy tricorder at least in size and bulk reminds me of the handheld scanners/tricorders used by T'Pol and other 22nd century Vulcans on ENT.
Another way to view is that...Assuming USS Protostar is a prototypical ship (because of the slipstream stuff we see in the opening), maybe we can assume a lot of stuffs (including tricorder and phaser) in the ships are also prototypes/experimental devices.
I do feel that the Prodigy Tricorder is an evolution of the 2379 one.
Like the PHASER this is a training TRICORDER for beginners, I like the look of it as for where it fits IT FITS IN THIS SHOW
Given that Janeway considers the crew to be cadets then maybe the equipment that she made available to the gang are of the Trainee level variety.

It reminds me of a Blackberry Priv smartphone with a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard.
I’m really surprised you didn’t bring up the TOS tricorder
Can’t believe they almost left out Enterprise tricorder . Also original tricorders should have been shown.
For me this is a far more logical version of the tricorder than those trying to stay with the more TNG style. I absolutely hate the small screens and find the tricorder, these days, to be what happens when real world tech outpaces our older science fiction. Could be a experimental tricorder unique to the Protostar
That's what I'm thinking
I do wish the tricorder and phaser looked more time period accurate but, what can you do. This is what today's kids are familiar with because of the Kelvin movies.

I would prefer that the lower left of the screen be whole. For it to look like it's missing a piece, it looks silly.
Innovation is great, but the wheel does not need to be re-invented.

Hmmm, this is considered a backward step, the cumbersome look is not streamline enough.

Isn't the future Janeway tricorder from 2404?
I was today years old when I learned what PADD means.

No Discovery badge tricorder? 😅
Dr Jurati did say the medical tricorder was a relic!!!?
She is in the medical field, so anything older than a few years i can see her saying was a "relic" in that situation.
Given that this is a work of fiction and not a documentary..... it can look however it likes :-)

Don't care for it. As a PADD it could be ok but not as a tricorder.

Kids do love iPads 😉😔
🧐🧐🧐

All those old ones are laughable. If my iPhone 4 looks more advanced than something from 300 years in the future…throw it in the trash
Well that is the problem when making sci fi set in our future. Current world tech very quickly catches up to what ever tech they could afford to put in the shows.
The more I see, the more...generic this seems. All neon and colors but little function.
Doesn't look very portable
No, it does not
