Scoliosis is a structural spinal condition involving an unnatural sideways curvature. Unfortunately, scoliosis is progressive, worsening over time.
During growth, scoliosis progresses slowly, affecting adults due to compression. Multiple sclerosis, a central nervous system disease, disrupts brain-body communication.
While scoliosis may compress spinal nerves, it doesn't cause autoimmune disorders like multiple sclerosis. However, both conditions can lead to similar symptoms, such as pain and discomfort.
It's more likely for multiple sclerosis to cause scoliosis due to neuromuscular effects. Asymmetry from disrupted brain-body connection can lead to scoliosis development.
Differences aside, both conditions involve the brain and spinal cord and have unknown causes. They're progressive and considered incurable.
While spinal conditions can have similar effects, they're distinct issues. It's more likely for multiple sclerosis to lead to scoliosis than vice versa.
Having both conditions simultaneously is possible, often due to a combination of factors. Treatment typically addresses each condition separately.
So, if you have both multiple sclerosis and scoliosis, treat multiple sclerosis first, then address the scoliosis, as it eventually affects the body structurally.

I agree. I have patients with MS with significant weakness and spasticity which can lead to secondary scoliosis.
