It's called the "Olram Subtlety" by Ed Marlo (Olram spelled backwards is?) as per Card College (v.3 p.603) and Daryl (dvd 7 00:00:00). I am 50 and learning magic due to a long illness. I have to say that you, Asad, are a cut above the rest of the RUclips herd. Your smooth, mature delivery, intelligent patter and confident hand make you one of the ones to watch. And I don't just mean magic. I'm sure you that you could pick any field and come out on top in just a few years. I wish you all the best, but hey, you won't need it. A subscriber and a fan - Jim Davis, Montreal

I love these simple, bold card controls (if you would call this one). They feel so risky when you preform them but they really do just pass by so fast you have no time to think about it

Hi Asad, Not sure you'll get this nine years after the fact. I like to do a follow-up, where I tell the spectators how a guy challenged me at a party one time, saying (for example), "Well, I was thinking of the 4 of hearts and that has a blue back." I told him, "No problem," as I set the 4 of hearts on the table, blue back facing up, and waving my hand over the packet, say, "I''ll just turn the back of all of these cards red." It's a strong kicker.

The best bit about this trick is that if you drop the cards down as suggested, you can immediately perform the same trick again (I know, I know, you're not supposed to perform the same trick twice), and then the audiance is completely baffled! After the first time, they KNOW all the cards have one jacket and the odd one out has another - and then... the impossible happens. A wonderful routine by Ed Marlo (the Olram subtlety).

I have done this trick a bunch now, and while teaching a friend i first showed him the trick then said "the cool thing is that if you had chosen this card i would tell you that all these cards came from a blue deck and that this one was the only red one" i have since added that to my perfomance of this trick and i think it greatly adds to the effect

Thanks pal, This is a nice table hopping effect ( you notice I don't use the word Trick) One of my first mentor's 40 years ago, told me a trick is when a dog stands on his hind legs. The word trick cheapens you, so I always say, I'm going to show you a magical effect, or I'm going to show you a magical mystery. Take it for what ever it's worth. Thanks again, Magic Art.

When I perform this I hand the spectator a folded, written prediction, telling them I chose the 8 cards with their specific psychological make-up in mind, and there is only one card among the eight they could possibly choose. I do a casual face-up shuffle as I'm explaining (just a series of single cuts with the face-up packet), and then allow them to cut the packet before choosing. This proves the position of the cards isn't a factor in their choice. Once they choose, I give them a chance to change their mind. Once they've chosen their card, I do the Olram Subtlety, and then have them read my "prediction", which simply says, "Turn over your selected card". Using a written prediction takes the heat off the Olram move, since they're not expecting a color change, and won't be focused on the front/back display of the other cards while that is happening. I always make sure the 8 cards are all different values, and always use 2 cards of each suit, with no aces. For such a simple effect, the reaction is always total amazement.

A kicker on this trick is after you gather up the cards, put one of the blue backed ones down saying "Of course, it doesn't matter if you had picked one of these cards, because now..." and do the reveal again with the opposite colour "... all the other cards are now red!

Go into another trick, or my favorite make the deck vanish in a fancy way, it would have to be special sense the cards are red and blue, if your at a table or desk you can dump all the cards except one on to your lap and hold the one card at an angle clap your hands you have their chosen card, do a basic vanish or do the move where you snap and the card goes to your lap and "vanishes" and wait then quickly put the cards in your pocket.

    • @vidmaster7

Watch his explanation again because he does a great job. If you alternate the colors as he specified AND if you turn over the back of the card on the bottom of the pile you are holding then it will work. Let's say face up you have the following cards: 2C on the top, 3H, 5S, and at the bottom the KD. When you turn that packet of cards over the back of the KD is what they see but you push off the 2C. The back of the card will match the single card in your other hand.
