I have a couple of comments: the approx. maximum weight the crane can lift is the 9392 quad-bike. Also the truck doesn't lean at first but after a couple of years sitting on a shelf there is literally no "spring" about the left hand side shock absorbers. I highly recommend taking out the battery box before displaying, putting away, etc.
I am now watching this video after I just built mine a couple months ago and I can say without a doubt what a great model to get. It's big. It has a lot of pieces. And....I bruised by fingers in the process of building! But it was worth it.
This looks very nice! With the default battery box, and some motorised functions already, it still looks like it can be easily motorised, for example i would change the fake motor with an L motor, place somewhere the servo, and connect it all to the ir receiver that is connected to default battery box. So they who has it, it looks like one of the best lego sets to motorise, and the bonus is it is 4x4!(just take the differencials off)
@harmanmotor No the motor rotation will still slip on clutch when the crane comes against stop! not as sensitive as when the clutch was the last gear, but is good for those who have not additional clutch. It is not recomended to remove the winch clutch cos with out it the thread always cut off.
@NikolaosLedZeppelin excellent idea about the clutch on the compressor pump. Although it will be good to have an additional clutch gear on the crane as well...as otherwise there might be problems when rotating the crane swivel base and it comes up against the stop.
@downhill2k4 You are right, and I'm sorry if I seem like a dork. It's just hard to give a simple answer when you're being asked the same thing for like 100th time... I guess I have to work on that.
@harmanmotor the best is to exchange the clutch gear from crane with the 24t gear from motor. I made it and was success, the pump stop pumping when overpressure as the motor slips on clutch.
@lullaren I have motorised this kit now in terms of driving the vehicle backwards and forwards. I had to implement gear reduction in the portal axles (3:1) otherwise the kit runs too fast with very little torque. I also implemented addition 3:1 reduction up where the motor is located and modification of the chassis is necessary otherwise the 24T gear won't fit. My plans are to motorise the steering and then add an IR remote with speed control. I would also like to add a 2nd gear ratio.
The new tires seem to offer better surface than the baloon ones. Also, they remind me somehow of the ones the old 5563 came with. The profile on these newer ones is more refined though. The model seems awesome either way. Must make an effort to get one, even if it will be just to try and figure out how to power it and drive it around the park :D
I'd rather TLG focus more on quality than the number of pieces. The BWE almost feels like a useless proof of concept where they use almost 4000 pieces and 1 motor for 6-7 different functions when they could have just used 4 motors and half the number of pieces to accomplish the same thing. I want more sets like the old 2005 bulldozer.
@fudgun it took me about 30min to convert the portal axles and then setup the motor mounts. I have on order some additional pneumatic parts including an air tank which I will mount in the rear tray and redirect the compressor pump to "charge" the air tank and run the pneumatic services off that. Another modification possibility is adding air shocks to the rear suspension. Will have to see... I will try and post a video as I get these things done.
If I remember correctly, the new shock absorbers that came with the Unimog were listed in bricklink as being "hard". This was a mistake, they are actually extra-hard spring shock absorbers, thus being diffrent from the ones in 8466.
I need your help! The pump produces air perfectly when the motor rotates in one direction. However it doesn't pump any air at all or sometimes very little when the motor rotates in the opposite direction. What 's wrong? Thank you.
Looks really nice! I have some cash to spend it on Technic and i don't know which one should i choose.. 8110 or 8258 (Mostly for parts, coz got only 8043 already) what do you think?
what would you say is better? the unimog or 4x4 crawler? i have been trying to decide which i want. either way i would be putting better motors in to them. but as standard which is better?
@searme Thanks for reply. I thinking a little and in my opinion firstly i'll buy 8258 coz its 2009 model, and lego will stop selling it soon. 8110 is new, so they will offer it for about 2 years. Am i right? Nastepnym razem napisze po Polsku ;)
I have one already converted to PF works well but I had to reinforce where the center differential. XL uses a twin-engine, four-wheel and one for the system of differential cruce.los help the engine is not forced or make any axes the entire force. you change the battery plus normal six double batteries, a rechargeable battery without any problems. god video.
Can you do a more detailed review on this now because it was not very detailed 7 years ago it would be nice because there are no english reviews for this set and the only ones are german with no subtitles.
Are you sure? I've just checked and there seems to be a number of reviews? And anyway, I've disassembled this set years ago and thrown away the box and instructions.
How tough overall is the set? I know Technic sets are usually pretty durable compared to the standard style set, but does this particular model have any structural flaws?
I don't know... while it definitely looks great, i think some details are making it lot worse than it could be. Like the fact that you change the turning direction with the battery box, which, as seen in this video sometimes isn't that accurate, or that there is nothing to prevent pressure from build up and making the pneumatic functions very hard to control carefully.
Sariel's LEGO® Workshop I was leaning towards the arocs more too. The legacy surrounding the unimog has always enticed me though, never got one while they were still on sale Thanks for the response!
I am building unimog and when I am pushing whole unimog, cilinders are not moving. when I am turning only one or both front wheels or one or both rear wheels cilinders are moving. I think that cilinders should be moving in every case. what should i do?
@TVfanfanatic the pneumatics only cost more than 50€ alone on ebay. So with 160€ I think is good price. Buying legos is not only game you know... is pleasure, is parts for mocs, is an investment. For example my 8455 backhoe I bought it 2004 for 60€ and now estimated more than 300€ used!!!!
The best set I have, just by staring at it or playing it this is totally awesome.
dont u love that feeling when u open a technic box and see all those bags of goodness - boy i love that feeling!!!!!
@Rastwo666 Nope, the instruction is not available for download yet and I have no time to wait.
took me half a day to build mine and after my fingers were dead lol, great review
I have watched many Unimog U400 reviews and yours is by FAR the BEST!!!
Loved seeing you operate it nearing the end of the video.
@jovlem Just a simple motorized dolly I've built with Lego.
Awesome review!! and just the right amount of information

@SuperAirplane123 From inside the box.
I just got that set after a year of saving up, great job, great video, and great channel keep it up, i make lego videos too! Lego technic!
Well, that's the question to you, depending on whether you want to look at your Lego or to use it, isn't it?
@fgnschiffler It's the original unchanged set.
Dear santa.....
Yes yes me too
Busy searching what I want for Christmas and this what I find xd
@MrLudovico100 Two days for me, but that depends on how much spare time you have - I had little.
@evrel1989 Depends on what you want to build later, but 8258 is certainly worth considering.
This looks very nice! "hand of god steering", you are the god of lego
soft music very unusual for what i can remember from your videos
Thoughts on pneumatics?
@Bonald1101 From Bricklink.
4:02 :How is the app called?I need it!Do you have it from the Androit-market?Please answer!
Hey, do you recommend this model? Great vids!
@harmanmotor No the motor rotation will still slip on clutch when the crane comes against stop! not as sensitive as when the clutch was the last gear, but is good for those who have not additional clutch. It is not recomended to remove the winch clutch cos with out it the thread always cut off.
That's up to you, isn't it?
@NikolaosLedZeppelin excellent idea about the clutch on the compressor pump. Although it will be good to have an additional clutch gear on the crane as well...as otherwise there might be problems when rotating the crane swivel base and it comes up against the stop.
I heard about the steering on this model being very heavy-going and needing some modification to work much better?
@Praumax As soon as I have enough time to do it.
I go crazy while i imagine how many ingeneering work this took
The B-model of the Mobile Crane Mk 2.
@downhill2k4 You are right, and I'm sorry if I seem like a dork. It's just hard to give a simple answer when you're being asked the same thing for like 100th time... I guess I have to work on that.
BEST Lego Technic ever!!!!!!!!And BEST Video of the BEST Lego Technic ever!!!!!!!!
It comes as shown in video.
that tilting comes from pushing on the side of the battery box, it doesn't come completely straight always
The Crawler is better because it has better motors.
@TheJura7 Well, they are round, so...
@harmanmotor the best is to exchange the clutch gear from crane with the 24t gear from motor. I made it and was success, the pump stop pumping when overpressure as the motor slips on clutch.

@harmanmotor how long did it take, are you going to add any other modifications?
Cool video!
What did you use as a dolly?
ALso you may want to try vritualdub + deshaker for getting rid of some vibrations.
Did you ever had a chance to review or even build the b model
@atri55 Quite long, longer than any other Technic set.
The Bucket Wheel Excavator breaks the record in 2016!
It seems like every year there's a new set that breaks the previous size record
+Optimistic Pessimist Yeah but the Bucket weel excavator has nearly 4000 pieces, so i'm pretty sure it will have the record for a while.
I'd rather TLG focus more on quality than the number of pieces. The BWE almost feels like a useless proof of concept where they use almost 4000 pieces and 1 motor for 6-7 different functions when they could have just used 4 motors and half the number of pieces to accomplish the same thing. Bricker 46 the new mobile crane set from 2018 just beat it
@harmanmotor cool, and just a suggestion: make it completely adjustable, and possible fully independent. Its a lot of work, but you seem capable.
Sick set hey searme whered u get it EBAY!!!! or what did u get a good deal on it good to buy it for the peices. :p
@fudgun it took me about 30min to convert the portal axles and then setup the motor mounts. did subtitles not work or something? what is going on?
BEST REVIEW OF A LEGO EVER!!!!
how much time does it take to build?
If I remember correctly, the new shock absorbers that came with the Unimog were listed in bricklink as being "hard". This was a mistake, they are actually extra-hard spring shock absorbers, thus being diffrent from the ones in 8466.
Extra hard
What do you think is better in terms of playability, the crane arm on this or the boom on the Mobile Crane MK II?
I need your help! The pump produces air perfectly when the motor rotates in one direction. However it doesn't pump any air at all or sometimes very little when the motor rotates in the opposite direction. What 's wrong? Thank you.
Looks really nice! I have some cash to spend it on Technic and i don't know which one should i choose.. 8110 or 8258 (Mostly for parts, coz got only 8043 already) what do you think?
If i were to choose between this set and the 8466 off-roader, what should i buy?
+Kyle Thomas Definitely this set.
Sariel's LEGO® Workshop me too
what would you say is better? the unimog or 4x4 crawler? i have been trying to decide which i want. either way i would be putting better motors in to them. but as standard which is better?
Is this the original modell, or did you change anything?
Is this worth keeping together or should i take this apart because i could use the extra parts
I have to get me one of these!!! By the way, it says on TechnicBRICKs that the release date was postponed from July to August. How'd you get your set?
@searme Thanks for reply. I thinking a little and in my opinion firstly i'll buy 8258 coz its 2009 model, and lego will stop selling it soon. 8110 is new, so they will offer it for about 2 years. Am i right? Nastepnym razem napisze po Polsku ;)
Do you think this is a good set? Or do you think the 9398 crawler is better?
@SuperAirplane123 Bricklink.
I have one already converted to PF works well but I had to reinforce where the center differential. XL uses a twin-engine, four-wheel and one for the system of differential cruce.los help the engine is not forced or make any axes the entire force. you change the battery plus normal six double batteries, a rechargeable battery without any problems. god video.
Just bought this set. Building it atm..... Im 43 ...... But i love this stuff......
@searme I am buying this set what are your top 5 mods?
Surprisingly, it's called Bubble Level.
how did you get this set
were did you get this set
+Sariel do you like these rims or the modern set's?
+Sasiram Single This is a pretty modern set.
They also made new gears for the ptos and insides
is it possible to use this tyres in truck trial?
Looks brilliant!
zrobisz recenzje na lugpol-u?
Can you do a more detailed review on this now because it was not very detailed 7 years ago it would be nice because there are no english reviews for this set and the only ones are german with no subtitles.
Are you sure? I've just checked and there seems to be a number of reviews? And anyway, I've disassembled this set years ago and thrown away the box and instructions.
Oh ok ill check a little more thanks for replying
how long it takes to assembly it???
Jak go zdobyłeś ?
An air flow restrictor could stop the crane collapsing so fast (but Lego don't make one).
Dose it include a controller
This set doesn't have remote control. You control it by turning the battery box on or off.
@searme i was on lego yesturday the b-model is a snow plow you can download it!!!
What camera did you use to film this?
The air powered arm is way too responsive, but I can't wait to get this set in the US.
I'm building this kit now but I will be adding an air tank to save compressor pump wear and also save batteries.
How tough overall is the set? I know Technic sets are usually pretty durable compared to the standard style set, but does this particular model have any structural flaws?
how long does this take to build?
Sariel, my motor didnt work today, what should i do???
Contact Lego customer service.
Still worth getting if found used? We are watching for 42043 as well. Which one first? :)
42043 is probably a better choice.
Sariel's LEGO® Workshop thanks!
@beastlybob36 ofcourse it will be, but how long it will be available depends on LEGO
How long did it take to assemble?
You can. With your hand.
Which Lego set should i get 8070 or 8110
What song is this?
Does this come fully r/c?
For the same price would you rather get 8110 or 9398?
9398.
@BluSigmaSL Nope.
im not kidding look up the set 8466 4x4 Off-Roader pieces, i believe it was made in 2001
I don't know... while it definitely looks great, i think some details are making it lot worse than it could be. Like the fact that you change the turning direction with the battery box, which, as seen in this video sometimes isn't that accurate, or that there is nothing to prevent pressure from build up and making the pneumatic functions very hard to control carefully.
would you recommend the unimog over the arocs model?
Not really, especially since it's probably more expensive now.
Sariel's LEGO® Workshop I was leaning towards the arocs more too. The legacy surrounding the unimog has always enticed me though, never got one while they were still on sale
Thanks for the response!
@jhsevs It is knuckleboom. The word cluckleboom doesn't exist. No offence.
you know those shock absorbers aren't new there in set 8466 4x4 Off-Roader
I am building unimog and when I am pushing whole unimog, cilinders are not moving. when I am turning only one or both front wheels or one or both rear wheels cilinders are moving. I think that cilinders should be moving in every case. what should i do?
You must have made a building error somewhere.
