@@bestoftrekworstoftrek …there was another great zoom-out in TNG - in ‘Q Who?’ as the crew’s walking inside the Borg cube, then pulling back to reveal to us the scale of the interior and vast number of drones operating the vessel - also a few layers of foreground hardware to sell the parallax so it appears more as a proper camera move. It’s a good painting, but the horror and the Ohmigod-Factor of the reveal put it over the top.
To be honest I think there's a couple better paintings, but I wanted to work that in their for controversy sake, though it really is beautiful in the grand scheme of matte paintings.
I'd like to learn to paint the matte painting on this title card. Ive tried several times in paint programs with this in the background to paint over and never did anything worth saving
Highly disagree with your assessment of TMP. I love the matte paintings in the film, and think attempts at realism in future editions highly detract from the overall feel. Plus, TMP is the best Trek movie and I will hear no dissent!

@Alex G. As a whole I don't like many Trek movies. It's just not a universe that lends itself to the big screen. Trek is shades of grey writing exploring morale grey areas where star wars, and most trek movies, are black and white writing, that works better in a 2 hour format having a clear villain. I do respect your, and everyone's particular loves in the trek universe. If you're new to the channel there are 20 episodes of Best 5, Worst 5 currently and 2 other weekly trek programs. Welcome!
@@bestoftrekworstoftrek the piece you pointed out doesn’t bother me, what does bother me is the matte painting when they step outside to meet V’ger. The enterprise looks wonky as hell. Good thing they fixed it with the special edition.
The remnants of Praxis (or a moon of) after the explosion in Star Trek 6, is, for me, the worst example of a matte painting in Star Trek history. And this after one of the great special effects shots (the actual explosion) in the series.
I totally agree. that image on the Excelsior viewscreen is shockingly poor. And as you say coming right after the really cool explosion and shockwave stuff.
I think the night establishing shot of Starbase 11, from TOS Court Martial and Eminiar 7 from TOS A Taste Of Armageddon are about as good as traditional matte paintings get. I’m pretty sure both were by the great Albert Whitlock.

BEST * One of the best si the shot at the end of Star Trek III where we see the Vulcan ceremony area - the tower with the temple on it and the nearby mountain almost silhouetted against the sunset. Glorious. * One of the best is in 'The Cage' the Medieval castle with the planet in the sky behind it. This often appeared in the end credits and is a really striking visual. And a very well done piece of special visual effects work. * The exterior in Court Martial is fab too. Great architecture and mood. another classic sci-fi image, really well conceived and executed. WORST * Probably one of THE most dreadful matte paining ever is in Star Trek the Motion Picture (original version - a totally new shot was created for the Director's editions). the show where you are looking down on the main saucer and see the crew Kirk and the others emerge onto the saucer surface. It is a fantastic idea and gave us a never before sense of scale for the ship... but the draftsmanship and execution is just awful. * Also from Star Trek the Motion Picture (original( is the wide shot of Vulcan (in fact both shots), with all the planets in the night sky. No atmosphere. its just a really confusing image, Yikes * I have to say most of the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine alien planet vistas looks pretty fake and samey to me.

I think you're being far too picky. It's something that younger generations have a problem with. They seem to be unable to suspend disbelief without total realism. I don't even know why this is an issue.
Amongst every category of things, there's a best and a worst, even if they're all great. So nitpicking is largely what it's down to...but as far as the nearly 50 year old matte that was the worst here...it's still the worst.
Great look at ST matte paintings! It might not be list-worthy, but I like how they integrated the crew with the crater in Best of Both Worlds.
I think that might be the only time they use maincast zoomed way out against a matte.

Your assessment of "The Devil in the Dark" as an episode hurts your credibility tremendously ... but you're right about the matte.
I feel like it's one of TOS best scripts, executed below it's potential.
For me 'Devil in the Dark' is an excellent episode that overcomes all of the technical limitations
